Abstract
A support for shelving or any two surfaces to be joined at a 90 DEG angle, uses a rigid interior bracket hidden by an outer cover for decorative effect.
Description
SHELF SUPPORTS.
WITH OPTIONAL BACKPLATE
AND
OPTIONAL CORNER FITTING.
This invention relates to shelf supports or brackets.
Shelf supports or brackets are used for fixing a horizontal surface, such as a shelf, to a vertical surface, such as a wall.
Most such supports will show the fixings which are used to attach them to the vertical and horizontal surfaces.
ost such supports have no provision for decorative Lack plates.
Most such supports have no provision for fixing into a corner, such as where two walls come together in a corner.
According to the present invention therefs provided a strong interior bracket, of metal or suitable plastic material, which fixes the horizontal and vertical surfaces together at a 90 degree angle.
This bracket may be fixed with either of the two flanges to the vertical or horizontal surface, so as to give a choice of fixing positions.
The whole of this interior bracket is then enclosed within a decorative outer cover. This hides all of the fixings, such as screw heads to both surfaces.
The outer cover will always have two straight sides, or edges, at 90 degrees to the other. The hypotenuse which is formed between the two ends of these sides may be of any shape.
The size and shape shewn in the drawings attached is only one of a variety of cptions.
The outer cover is held on to the interior bracket by means of a number of protuberances on the interior bracket which are gripped by a slightly narrower slot inside the outer cover.
As an optional extra fitting, a decorative backplate is made available to this present invention. This is made to go over the interior bracket so as to lie flat against the vertical surface. It is held on to the interior bracket by the protub erances near tha flanges on the interior bracket fitting into a slightly narrower slot in the backplate.
The backplate may be of any size or shape , and the sample as shewn in the drawings attached is only one of a variety of options.
The outer cover is then placed in position on the interior bracket as described above, so as to adjoin the backplate at a 90 degree angle.
A further optional extra is made available to this present invention to enable the inner bracket and exterior cover to be fitted into a 90 dgree corner, such as where two walls meet in a corner.
This is a triangular section, made of a suitable material, with one angle of 90 degrees and two angles of 45 degree.
The length of this section will be sufficient to allow one or both of the staight sides of the outer cover to fit onto it. The width of the surface formed by the hypotenuse will be wider than the width of the outer cover.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings marked 1/3, 2/3, 3/3, in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective, the interior bracket.
Figure 2 illustrates an end on view of the interior bracket showing specifically the protberances on part 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows the outer cover.
Fioures 4 and 5 shows the straight edges of the outer cover.
Figure 5 shows the backplate.
Figure 7 shows the corner fixing section.
Figure a shows the sectional view of figure 7.
Figures 9.10 and 11, illustrate the invention in use as:
Figure 9 without backplate.
Figure 10 with backplate attached.
Figure 11 when used as a corner fitting.
efering to the drawings Figure 1 is the interior bracket, being a triangular shaped fitting, marked 3, with two flanges, marked 1 and 2, at right angles to 3 and to each other. Part 3 will always have one 90 degree angle.
The * marked 4 are the protuberances on part 3.
The circles marked 5 illustrate holes for the passage ofscrews or other fixing devices to attach the flanges to the vertical and horizontal surfaces.
Figure 2 is an end on view of Figure 1, showing in particular the protuberances on part 3. The circles on ?, which are marked are holes.
Fioure 3 illustrates the outer cover, marked 6.
This will always have one right angle corner, and 6A and 6a will always be at right angles to 6.
The solid lines and the broken line marked 7 illustrate the slot in this outer cover into which part 3 of the interior bracket fits.
Part 7 will always exceed the size of part 3 in all dimensions.
Parts q and 9 are recesses to accomadate parts 1 and 2;that is the flanges of the interior bracket.
Parts 9 and 8 will always exceed the sizes of parts 1 and 2 in all dimensions so that the flanges will fit below the edges marked 68 and 6A.
In particular the depths of the recesses 8 and 9 will allow for the extra depth of any screws or similar fixings to be accomadated in the recesses; where the heads of such fixings protrude from the inside of the flanges.
Figures 4 and S show the top and side of the cuter cover and illustrate the slot 7 and the recesses 8 and 9 fron a plan and elevation viewpoint.
Figure 6 illustrates the sample backplate.
Slot 12 accomadates part 3 of the interior bracket.
Recess 10 accomadates flange 2 nearest the 90 degree corner.
The broken line marked 10A illustates a recess in the rear of the backplate to accomadate part 1 of the interior bracket.
The recesses 10 and ?OA will always exceed the sizes of the flanges fitting into them as explained above.
Figure 7 illustrates the device for- mounting the interior
bracket, as in Figure 1, and the outer cover as in Figure 3, into a 90 degree corner.
The rear faces, marked 13 and 14 are at a 90 degree angle to
each other, and the hypotenuse is at 45 degrees to these faces.
The front face, that is the hypotenuse, is marked 15.
In 15 there are two recesses to accomadate screw heads, and from these recesses, marked 16, two holes are made so as to
come out in the rear faces numbers 13 and 14.
These holes are at 90 degree angles to faces 13 and 14; and
are for the passage of screws or other fixings to attach the
corner fitting to the two vertical surfacessuch as at the
corner of two walls adjoining at right angles.
The recesses 15 are positioned n such a way that they do not
coincide with the screw holes in 1
When fixed into a corner, the interior bracket is fastened to
1S,the front face of the corner fitment, at the top of the corner fitting; and the outer cover is pushed up over the interior bracket.
Figure 11 shows this in situ.
Figure 8 illustrates a plan view and section through A 3 A
of the corner fitting showing the recesses to accomadate the wall fixings and the direction of the holes to the rear faces.
Figures 9, 10 and 11 are dealt with in section two above.
