Abstract

A container comprises a rectangular tray 10 formed with a wall at each of its four sides, and a lid 12 engageable with said walls. The lid is adapted to be held closed at one side of the container by a co-acting locking means 28 formed on the wall of said side and on an adjacent portion of the lid. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: Improvements in or relating tQ containers Field of the invention This invention relates to containers, particularly of a type comprising a rectangular tray formed with a wall at each of its four sides, and a lid engageable with the walls.
Background of the invention Containers of the @ype described may be used for containing various products, in particular items of hardware such as fasteners. Such containers are usually of elongated shape, with a handle being provided at one end og the tray. A number of such containers may then b housed in a reular array in a "@igeon hole" type of framework.
It is an object o' the present Invention to provide such a container in which the lid is held releasably closed at at least one side of the container.
Summary of the invention According to the present invention there is provided a container comprising a rectangular tray formed with a wall at each of its four sides, and a lid engageable with said walls, wherein the lid is adapted to be held closed at one side of the container by a co-acting locking means formed respectively on the wall of said side and on an adjacent portion of the lid.
The locking means preferably comprises a hook engageable with a corresponding recess.
Preferably the recess is formed on said portion of the lid, and the hook is formed on the wall of said side.
The lid may have a oeripheral lip engageable with the inside of the walls of the tray.
Advantageously the part of the wall on which the hook 15 formed is inwardly offset. The recess on the lid flay then be forked as a tab spaced from the adjacent pheripheral lip, the offset wall passing through each of say his enables the container to be formed of virtually the same outward appearance as a more conventional container.
A ledge Inay extend from the lid adjacent the locking means, and likewise from the opposite end of the lid.
A handle may be formed on the tray at the end opposite the lockIng means.
The container is preferably formed from a plastics material, with the lid being made of a clear plastics material.
Brief descrintion of the drawinqs A container in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of the container in an exploded view, with the lid raised; Figure 2 is an underside plan view of the lid; Figure 3 is a plan view of the tray; and Fiqure 4 is a scrap view on an enlarged scale of the locking means between the lid and the tray.
Detailed description of the drawings Reffering first to Figures 1 to 3, the container comprises an elongated rectangular tray 10 and a corresponding lid The tray has a flat base 14, from the sides of which extends a pheripheral wall 16. Projecting from the wall at one end of the tray is a handle 18.
The wall opposite the handle 18 includes a central oortlon 20 which is inwardly offset relative to the adjacent wall.
The lid 12 comprises a flat main portion 22 from which a peripheral lip 24 is dependent. The lip 24 of the lid engages with the inside of the walls 16 when the lid is fitted on the tray.
The lip 24 at the side corresponding to the inset wall 20 terminates at each side where the wall 20 is inset, leaving a space 26 into which the wall 20 extends when the lid is in place. Immediately above the wall 20 the lid is formed with a tab 21. Adjacent the tab 21 the flat part 22 of the lid extends into a ledge 30 to enable that end of the lid to be gripped by hand. A corresponding ledge 32 is formed at the opposite end of the tray 12.
Referring now to the enlarged view of Figure 4, at the top of the inset wall 20 is formed an outwardly projecting hook or snap fastener 34. A recess extends through the tab 28 at the position corresponding to the hook 34, to enable the hook to snap fit into the recess 36.
It will be observated that the co-acting surfaces of the hook 84 and he recess 36 are such that the lid cannot be raised merely by applying upward pressure to the ledge 30 When the container in use is sold is contains the product, such as the fasteners, and the lid is mainly teld in place by a label or tand extending around the lid oo the tray, The nook fastening 34 gives added security to maintain the lid closed. When the labels or bands are brocken the lid may be reved by pressing in the hook 34, by applying inward pressure to che inset wall 20.
When in use in the "pigeon hole" framework above referrend to, the container can be withdrawn by the handle 18 and the product removed by raising one end of the liA bv lifting the ledge 32, the hook 34 maintaining the other end of the lid closed. If desired the lid can also F removed by fully withdrawinq the container from the framework and further lifting the lid by upward pressure on the ledge 32.
The lid and the tray are both made of plastics material, but the lid is preferably made of a transparent plastics material to enable the contents of the container to be readily seen.

Claims (10)

Claims:
1. A container comprising a rectangular tray formed with a wall at each of its four sides, and a lid engageable with said walls, wherein the lid is adapted to be held closed at one side of the container by a co-acting locking means formed respectively on the wall of said side and on an adjacent portion of the lid.
2. A container according to claim 1 in which the locking means comprises a hook engageable with a corresponding recess.
3. A container according to either claim 1 or claim 2 in which the recess is formed on said portion of the lid, and the hook is formed on the wall of said side.
4. A container according to any of the preceding claims in which the lid has a peripheral lip engageable with the inside walls of the tray.
5. A container according to claim 3 in which the part of the wall on which the hook is formed is inwardly offset.
6. A container according to claim 5 in which the recess on the lid comprises a tab spaced from the adjacent peripheral lip, the offset wall passing through each of said spaces.
7. A container according to any of the preceding claims in which a ledge extends from the lip adjacent the locking means, and in which a ledge also projects from the opposite end of the lid.
8. A container according to any of the preceding claims in which a handle is formed on the tray at the end opposite the locking means.
9. A container according to any of the preceding claims in which the container is formed from a plastics material, with the lid being clear.
10. A container as substantially described herein with reference to, and as illustrated in, the accompanying drawings.
