Abstract
For mounting a pre-formed fillet in the region between surface parts, such as a wall surface and a working surface in a kitchen, which meet or are closely spaced, it is necessary to apply adhesive material to each surface margin. This is achieved by a distribution head which directs pasty material from an extrusion nozzle onto the margins of surface parts adjacent to the region, when the nozzle is adjacent to the region and moved along it. The distribution head comprises a pair of wiping and guiding edges 4, 5 lying in a plane inclined to the axis of the nozzle and inclined to each other in the plane and a notch 6 in each edge 4, 5 through which extruded pasty material passes to form a uniform ribbon correctly located on each of the margins. <IMAGE>
Description
EXTRUSION NOZZLE ADAPTER
in the Specification of our European Patent No. 0 106 sb7 we described apparatus for applying pasty material extruded from a nozzle, such as the nozzle of a collapsible tube, to form a fillet in a region between two surface parts inclined to each other. In particular, we described apparatus comprising guide means for guiding the movement of the nozzle along the region, the guide means having a pair of wing-like wiping elements with outer edges arranged to make substantially line contact with the respective surface parts adjacent to the region to exclude extruded pasty material therefrom and a collar joining the inner ends of the wing-iike elements straddling the region so that its outer edge will form extruded pasty material into the desired fillet.
This invention concerns a development of that apparatus, for depositing extruded material in controlled manner on surface parts adjacent to the region.
The apparatus described in our said Speciiication is effective for the tormation of a fillet in the region between surface parts, such as a wall surface and a working surface z a kitchen, which meet or are closely spaced.
However, li the surface parts are spaced more than a few millimetres apart, the extruded IrlaterXd is likely to flow freely between them and an adequate fillet may not be tormed. In these and certain other circumstances it is desirable to use a pre-fornied fillet, shaped to straddle the space between the surface parts
If necessary and to contact their margins adjacent to the region. Adhesive is applied to the margins to secure the fillet in position. To ensure that the fillet is secured throughout its length and that the region is sealed against the passage of moisture, gas or dirt, the adhesive must be applied in a continuous ribbon along each margin, accurately located for contact with the fillet and substantially uniformly distributed. It there is insufficient adhesive at any point, the fillet may not be secured satisfactorily but if there is too much then the excess will be squeezed out when the fillet is pressed hoe and will soil the surface adjacent to the fillet.
According to this invention an adapter for an extrusion nozzle for distributing pasty material extruded through the nozzle on the margins of surface parts adjacent to a region between the surface parts or in which the surface parts meet, by positioning the nozzle adjacent to the region and moving it along the region whilst pasty material is extruded through it, comprises means for guiding such movement of the nozzle and for receiving material extruded through the nozzle, the guide means having a pair of wiping edges lying in a plane inclined to the axis of the nozzle and inclined to each other in the plane to make contact with the respective margins, and a notch in each wiping edge through which extruded pasty material may pass to form a ribbon on each of the margins.
The adapter preferably includes a baffle element extending substantially perpendicular to a line between the centres of the two notches, to direct extruded material substantially equally towards the two notches and away from the region between the surface parts when the adapter is in use.
Alternatively, the nozzle may be provided with two outlets directed towards the respective notches.
The adapter may be formed integrally with a nozzle or be designed to be mounted on a nozzle. In the latter case, it may include a sleeve to fit over or to be attached in end-to-end relation with a nozzle.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of example by the accompanying drawings, in which
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an adapter for distributing extruded material
on margins of surface parts which are substantially perpendicular,
Figure 2 is an inverted plan of the adapter shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a section on the line X-X of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a view in the direction of arrow A in Figure 1 and
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the adapter in use.
The adapter comprises a right angled triangular guide element 1 formed integrally on one end of a sleeve 2 which has at its other end an internal screw thread 3 enabling it to be fitted to a complementary screw-threaded nozzle, for example the nozzle of a collapsible tube. The guide element 1 is inclined at 45 to the axis of the sleeve 2, which will coincide with the axis of a nozzle to which the sleeve is fitted. The edges 4 and 5 of the guide element 1, which are perpendicular to each other, are designed to make wiping contact with the margins of the respective surface parts adjacent to the region between them or in which they meet. A notch 6 is formed in each of the wiping edges 4 and 5 through which material extruded through the sleeve 2 can pass to be deposited in a ribbon on each of the margins, as will be described in more detail.
The junction between the guide element 1 and the sleeve 2 extends a little less than half-way across the sleeve 2 and the remaining end edge 7 of the sleeve lies in a plane perpendicular to the guide element 1. A baffle element 8 extends from the middle of the edge 7 across the end of the sleeve to the guide element, lying substantially perpendicular to a line between the centres ot tile notches 6. This leaves two outlets for material extruded through the sleeve, respectively directed towards the two notches 6. Extruded material will thus be directed by the baffle element 8 towards the vicinity of the notches 6 and away from the region between the surface parts.
In use, as shown in Figure 5, the adapter, fitted to an extrusion nozzle 9, is placed wlth its edges 4 and 5 in contact with the margins of surfaces 10 and 11 which are substantially perpendicular. The axis of the nozzle 9 and the sleeve z then lies approximately at 45 to the region between the surfaces, which in this case are spaced apart. If the surfaces were in contact, it would iie at aoout 45. to their line of contact. Adhesive material is extruded from the nozzle 9 through the sleeve and on both sides of the baffle element 8 onto the guide element 1 in the vicinity of each of the notches 6 and onto the surface margins. The assembly is moved along the region between the surfaces in the direction of the arrow B and is guided in this movement by the wiping contact of the edges 4 and 5, which are kept pressed against the respective surface margins. This wiping contact removes the extruded material from the surface margins except where it passes through the two notches, forming a substantially unitorm ribbon of adhesive 12 on each surface margin. Due to the positions of the notches 6 in the guide element 1, the two ribbons are correctly positioned on the surface margins to secure a pre-formed fillet so as to cover the region between the surfaces. The size of the notches 6 is such that these ribbons contain sufficient adhesive material to provide adequate adhesion of the fillet, but not so much that it will be squeezed out on to the surfaces alongside the fillet when the fillet is pressed home. Thus the adapter enables the correct quantity of adhesive to be applied quickly and easily in the correct location on both surfaces. Little skill is required, it being necessar-y only to keep the guide element 1 pressed against both surface margins and to regulate the rate of extrusion of the adhesive material so that a reservoir of material is maintained on the guide element around each notch, but so that the material does not flow beyond the free edge of the guide element so as to soil the surfaces.
Instead of the sleeve 2, the adapter could have other means for attaching it to an extrusion nozzle, such as a clip. Instead of being formed integrally with the sleeve 2 or other means for attachment to a nozzle 9, the guide element 1 could be formed integrally with a nozzle, which could have two outlets, directed respectively towards the notches 6.
