Abstract

A dispenser of a volatile liquid in vapour form has a housing having a front wall (1) and a rear wall (2). These walls are formed with slots (3) & (5), permitting the egress of vapour from the interior of the housing. An absorbant pad is disposed at the bottom of the housing and a plurality of volatile liquid containers are held in the top half of the housing, above the pad, each in register with at least one aperture (12) in the rear wall (2) of the housing. Each volatile liquid container is made wholly or partly of rupturable material. A piercing tool (13) is provided for insertion through the apertures (12) in the rear wall (2) of the housing for rupturing the volatile liquid containers individually. <IMAGE>

Description

APPARATUS FOR DISPENSING, IN VAPOUR FORM, A VOLATILE LIQUID This invention relates to apparatus for dispensing, in vapour form, a volatile liquid which may be a deodorant, perfume, fragrancy, air freshener insecticide, germicide or the like.
It is a common requirement to provide apparatus for dispensing, in vapour form, a volatile liquid which is an insecticide, germicide, a deodorant, a fragrancy, air freshener, a perfume or the like and such apparatus is commonly used in the home or in a car. It is particularly known to provide an apertured container having therein an absorbant pad, impregnated with the volatile liquid. Over a period of time, the volatile liquid vapourizes and is dispensed as a vapour through the apertures to the atmosphere in which the container is disposed, and such apparatus is commonly to be found in the home. One difficulty with such apparatus is that once the liquid has been completely evaporated, the apparatus is useless. However, there is a limit to the amount of liquid which can be impregnated into a single pad and obviously the size of the pad is limited by the size of the container.
It is an object of this invention to provide an apparatus for dispensing, in vapour form, a volatile liquid which is an insecticide, germicide, a deodorant, a perfume, a fragrancy, air freshener, or the like in which the above mentioned difficulty is alleviated.
According to this invention, there is provided apparatus for dispensing, in vapour form, a volatile liquid which is an insecticide, germicide, a deodorant, a perfume, a fragrancy, air freshener or the like, comprising a housing having a front wall and a rear wall, the front wall of the housing being formed with at least one aperture permitting the egress of vapour from the interior of the housing, an absorbant pad, a plurality of holders, each holder being formed or disposed within the housing and serving to hold a volatile liquid container within the housing, above the pad and in register with at least one aperture in the rear wall of the housing, each volatile liquid container being wholly or partly of rupturable material, and a piercing tool for insertion through the apertures in the rear wall of the housing for rupturing the volatile liquid containers individually.
In use, a piercing tool is used to pierce one of the volatile liquid containers by passing it through an aperture at the rear of the housing and thereafter the volatile liquid flows out of the ruptured volatile liquid container and impregnates the pad. The volatile liquid vapourizes over a period of, say, a month, until the pad loses all its impregnation. Then the user pierces the next volatile liquid container by passing the piercing tool through another aperture at the rear of the housing to again impregnate the pad. This procedure is carried out at regular intervals until all the containers have been ruptured.
Preferably, the housing is formed, at its rear, with a holder for the piercing tool.
Preferably, the piercing tool has two prongs and two apertures are formed in the rear of the housing in register with each volatile liquid container.
Preferably, the holder for the piercing tool comprises two apertures in the rear of the housing, not in register with any volatile liquid container, and into which the prongs of the piercing tool are a tight fit.
Preferably, the rear of the housing is formed with a forwardly projecting shelf, defining the base of each holder and with forwardly projecting divider walls, each of which is common to two holders, the front of the housing being formed with a rearwardly projecting shelf in line with the forwardly projecting shelf of the rear of the housing and with rearwardly extending projections above the shelf of the front of the housing, not in line with the dividers formed on the rear of the housing and serving to engage the volatile liquid containers to hold them in position.
Preferably, there are provided three volatile liquid holders.
Apparatus for dispensing, in vapour form, an insecticide, germicide, a deodorant, a perfume, a fragrancy, air freshener or the like and in accordance with this invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 and Figure 2 are, respectively, front and rear views of the apparatus; Figure 3 and Figure 4 are, respectively, a front view and a section elevation on the line A-A of a rear panel of the housing of the apparatus; Figure 5 is a rear view of the front of the housing; and Figure 6 is a view to an enlarged scale, of a piercing tool.
The housing of the apparatus is made up of a front half 1 (shown in Figures 3 and 4) and a rear half (shown in Figure 5) fitted together to make a generally rectangular housing.
The front half 1 of the housing is formed with parallel angled slots 3 and with curved decorative slots 4, shown only in Figure 1, through which the vapour can leave the housing. The rear half of the housing is formed over its lower half is angled slots 5 shown only in Figure 2 and these also allow the egress of vapour.
The slots 3, 4 and 5 are not shown in Figures 3, 4 and 5.
The rear half 2 of the housing is formed with a forwardly projecting shelf 6 which is in line with a rearwardly projecting shelf 7 on the front half of the housing 1. The rear half of the housing is also formed, above the shelf 6, with forwardly projecting dividers 8, which define the three spaces 9, each of which constitutes a holder for a volatile liquid container which is not shown. Above the shelf 7, the front 1 of the housing is formed with a rearwardly projecting vertical protrusion 11 in line with the middle line of each of the holders 9. Along its vertical middle line, each holder 9 is formed in the rear of the housing 2, with two apertures 12.
The rear of each volatile liquid container is of rupturable material being of foil or film and its front is transparent and invisible through the corresponding slot 4.
A pad (not shown) takes up the space in the housing below the shelves 6 and 7. The shelves 6 and 7 do not meet and there is a space between them along the middle of the housing.
As seen in Figure 6, a piercing tool 13 is provided and has two forwardly projecting prongs 14, spaced apart by the space between two adjacent apertures 12 and dimensioned to pass through those apertures.
In use, when the apparatus is first purchased, the purchaser takes the piercing tool and passes it through one of the pairs of apertures so as to pierce one of the volatile liquid containers. The volatile liquid immediately runs downwardly through the space between the two shelves 6 and 7 and impregnates the pad. To provide the space, the shelves 6 and 7 are cut away (not shown). Vapour is given off from the pad and passes upwardly between the space between the two shelves 6 and 7 and is mainly emitted through the curved slots 5 in the front half 1 of the housing. After whatever period, say a month, is required for the vapour to completely evaporate from the pad, the user then pierces the volatile container in the next holder 9, re-using the pad. It will be appreciated that the pad is used a total of three times. In a conventional vapour dispensing apparatus of this nature, the quantity of vapour which can be emitted is essentially limited by the size of the pad but it will be seen that in accordance with this invention the pad is utilized on a plurality of occasions which extends the life of the vapour dispensing apparatus.
The rear of the container is, as seen in Figure 2, formed with a holder for the piercing tool 13. This holder consists of two apertures 15, formed in the base of a recess 16 dimensioned to receive the piercing tool 13 so that when not in use, the piercing tool 13 fits into the recess 16 and is not lost.
It will also be seen that part of the area of the slots 3 of the front of the housing shown in Figure 1 is covered by a decorative flower engraving 17.
The user can see the three liquid containers through the corresponding slots 4 and since the fronts of the liquid containers are of transparent material, the user can see which, if any, liquid containers are still full of liquid.
