Abstract
A trafficator/hazard warning light system to be worn on the person which is controlled by two independent push on, push off switches that activate yellow LEDs embedded in a strip of reflective material, secured to a safety harness or garment, and positioned so as to indicate the intended direction of the wearer to other road users. White and red LEDs are also embedded into the material to indicate the front and rear respectively in accordance with normal conventions for road users. The white and red LEDs to remain lit during hours of darkness - the yellow LEDs to flash intermittently. Provision to be made for remote control facility for use by handicapped persons.
Description
PERSONAL TRAFFICATOR/ HAZARD WARNING SYSTEM.
This invention relates to a personal trafficator/ hazard warning light system for use by cyclists, horse-riders and other similar road users.
Safety tabards, harnesses and garments are in daily use on our roads. They serve to warn motorists and other road users of possible hazards. With mobile hazards, it is not sufficient to know that they are there - it is necessary to know where they will be going next. It is also beneficial if warning is given before the hazard falls within the beam of any fast approaching vehicle.
According to the present invention there is provided a personal trafficator/ hazard warning system comprising various coloured Light Emitting Diodes embedded into a strip of reflective material, attached to a fluorescent safety harness or garment, and connected by printed circuits to push on/ push off switches which , when activated, signal a left or right turn or when switched on together act as hazard warning lights. The apparatus is expected to be worn around the upper torso of the individual.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective, the personal trafficator/ hazard warning light system worn in garment form.
Figure 2 shows the same system worn in harness form.
Figure 3 shows in plan the reflective strip wired with LEDs, switches and circuitry.
Referring to the drawing the trafficator/ hazard warning light system comprises a 4-inch wide strip of fluorescent yellow or white reflective material 10 into which are embedded four or more red LEDs 11, four or more white, or off-white, LEDs 12, and eight or more yellow LEDs 13.
These LEDs are soldered at the rear to printed circuit boards 14 and 15, together with an intermittent power breaker 16 and a battery conection terminal 17 for us with a 9-volt PP3 type battery. The printed circuit boards 14 and 15 are connected to each other and the push on/ push off switches 18 by thin wire 19. A small hole is made in the base garment or harness 20 and the reflective strip 10 is then sewn on to the base garment 20 and sealed against water penetration. The battery terminal is pulled through the hole so that the battery can be connected inside the garment and is accessible for speedy replacement of battery.
Appropriately rated resistors/ resistances will be incorporated into the printed circuit in order that the one source of power will feed both the red and white LEDs 11 and 12, which will remain lit whilst the battery is connected, and the yellow LEDs 13 that will flash only when the push switches are in the 'on' position.
The switch can be extended for remote control by physically handicapped people. The design of the control switch 21 would of necessity depend upon the nature of the handicap suffered by the individual.
Claims (2)
1 A personal trafficator/ hazard warning light system comprising a strip of reflective material, sewn onto a harness or garment - fluorescent or otherwise - embedded into which are red, white and yellow Light Emitting Diodes, powered by battery, and controlled by push on/ push off switches for the purpose of signalling by road users.
2 A personal trafficator/ hazard warning light system as claimed in Claim 1 wherein control switches are activated by remote control of unspecified design for use by handicapped road users.
