Abstract
A motor vehicle electrical isolator (emergency) is a unit which is fitted to any class of motor vehicle with an electrical supply for the means of starting and or operating an engine or motor. The purpose of this unit is to detect any heavy discharge or shorting out of the vehicles electrical supply in the event of a malfunction in the vehicle or in the event of an accident, rendering damage to body work or fittings, which could cause damage to the wiring circuit. This unit will respond to any electrical short and subsequently sever the electrical supply to the vehicle, minimising the risk of ignition by the electrical circuit to any volatile mixture or combustible materials. Overcurrent is detected by an inductive sensor which is coupled by an amplifier to control a solenoid switch so as to open its contacts and protect the vehicle wiring circuits. The solenoid has to be manually reset. When the starter motor is operated a signal is supplied to the amplifier to render the unit inoperative until the starter is disengaged. <IMAGE>
Description
Emergency Battery isolator For Motor Venicles.
This invention relater to @n clectrical ist, unit in the event of an accident or electrical fault in the venicles circuit.
This nuit is installed as close to the battery as is possible.
The purpose of this unit is to isolate any electrical supply furtner than the unit @tself should a fault occur in the electrical system of the vehicle.
On exemple, which is most important, is in the event of an accident, the bod@ @@ most vehicles crumple under @@act with the probability that any torn metal will enort out any electrical wires which could be torn between it, subsequently in most cases any wires not protettes @@ @@ @@ fu@@ woult @@@@ te burn. which will quickly fonite an@ flammable vapour or fuel.
The system works bv using en inductive sensor on the battery cutout lead, which will detect a heavy discharge in the venicles system, this sional in turn feeas an amplifier which will amplity the signal and denanding on a presen value of discharge will supply a feed to a normally closed solenoid switch, causing this switch to go open circuit, the solenoid switch itelt is in the battery output lead, when the switch is open circuit this will prevent any further discharge from the battery.
The solenoid switch is built in such a may that when it goes open circuit, the switch is held in this position by a resettable pawl tooth, this will maintain the system open circuit unless it is desired that the system should be operable once more, as an example, if the switch where to operate prematurely or by an electrical system fault, in which case the switch can be reset by manualy by mechanicaly disengaging the pawl tooth gear.
There is a system isolator circuit built in to the unit, whereby when the starter motor is operated, this would normally show a heavy discharge sufficient to operate the unit, with the system isolator in circuit, when the starter motor is operated this supplies a signal to the amplifier to fender the unit inoperable while the starter otor is engages, ence the starter motor is disengaged the sytem will operate as normai.
On some modern vehicles where a memory circuit la employes @@@ computerised components or radio circuits, a se@@@ ete @@@@@@ line would be take@ eft the battery output @@@@.
