Abstract

A composite stack of sheets of writing paper for making notes includes a plurality of blocks (12, 14) of stacks of the material. The side surface of a block is covered with an adhesive (15) to which the adjacent side surface of another of the blocks is attached. The blocks may be made up of plain sheets of paper or removable adhesive backed sheets. A plurality of blocks may be adhered to a common side of a block (10) of unitary construction. <IMAGE>

Description

BLOCKS OF SHEET MATERIAL This invention relates to blocks, pads or stacks of sheet material such as paper which are stuck together.
The invention is particularly applicable to such a block, pad or stack in which the individual laminae are detachable one at a time, such as desk top note pads.
For convenience the term "block" will be used to refer to the various forms which the composition of laminae can take.
In order to hold such a block of sheets together, it is known to apply an adhesive to a flat side surface made up of one edge of each sheet i.e. that area which defines a part of a side surface of the block. The side surface thus comprises an edge of all the sheets in the block. The sheets may be stuck together simply by a layer of an adhesive applied over all or most of the side surface or by a film or strip of a suitable sheet material which is stuck onto that surface.
According to the present invention there is provided a composite stack of sheets of sheet material comprising a plurality of blocks, at least one of which comprises a plurality of sheets of the sheet material having a side surface defined by the edges of the sheets, and at least one adhesive layer, between adjacent side surfaces of at least two blocks, holding the two blocks together.
Preferably, the adhesive layer holds at least three blocks together. Conveniently, these comprise a first block and the remaining blocks stuck to the adhesive layer interposed between the remaining blocks and a common side surface of the first block.
One of the blocks may be formed with a bore for holding a writing or other desk implement.
One of the blocks may have further adhesive layers interposed between successive sheets in the block.
One of the blocks may be solid.
The present invention can be put into practice in several ways one of which will now be described by way of example with reference to the single accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a block of papers according to the present invention.
Referring to the drawing a composite block of sheets of note paper comprises a first block portion 10, a second block portion 12 and a third block portion 14.
The second and third portions are separate from one another and the first portion. However, they are held together by an adhesive backing 15 located on a side surface of the first block 10 and the adjacent side surfaces of the second and third blocks 12 and 14.
Thus the sheets are essentially held together by the adhesive backing which is common to the first block and each of the second and third blocks, respectively.
The first block is formed with a bore 16 toward one end which affords a hold in which a pencil 18 can be mounted.
The second block is of plain paper.
The third block is of "POST-IT" notelets of the kind manufactured by the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company and sold under the trade mark "POST-IT".
Thus, each block comprises a plurality of sheets of paper. Each sheet is held in position with respect to an adjacent sheet in the block by the adhesive layer.
The blocks are also held in position relative to one another by the adhesive layer.
Primarily, the adhesive layer creates a form of hinge for the sheets of blocks, such that a sheet from any block can be separated and removed by peeling it away from the adhesive layer.
This invention is not limited to a number of blocks which are kept together by a simple straight adhesive layer.
Pairs of adjacent blocks could equally well have a common adhesive layer such that more than one separate adhesive layer is used. In this case a pair of adjacent blocks may also have more than one adhesive layer holding them together. The separate layers may be disposed on either side of a formation similar to the bore 16 defined by one or both adjacent side surfaces.
In another form of the invention one of the blocks of sheets is replaced by a solid block to which the remaining blocks of sheets are attached by means of the adhesive layer.

Claims (9)

1. A composite stack of sheets of material for writing on, comprising a plurality of blocks, at least one of the blocks consisting of a plurality of sheets, the edges of which sheets defining a side surface of the or each block consisting of the sheets, and adhesive applied to the side surfaces of two adjacent blocks to hold the blocks together.
2. A stack of sheets as claimed in claim 1 in which the individual sheets in at least one block are removably held together by adhesive interposed between them.
3. A stack of sheets as claimed in claim 2 in which a pair of blocks are held together by a layer of adhesive interposed between adjacent side surfaces of the blocks.
4. A stack of sheets as claimed in claim 1, 2, or 3 in which a pair of blocks are held together by a layer of adhesive extending across adjacent side surfaces defining a common plane.
5. A stack of sheets as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4 in which one of the blocks is of a unitary construction.
6. A stack of sheets as claimed in claim 5 in which the said one of the blocks provides a side surface to which two or more blocks of sheets are adhered.
7. A stack of sheets as claimed in any preceding claim in which one of the blocks is formed with a hole extending through the sheets.
8. A stack of sheets as claimed in any preceding claim in which the sheets are paper.
9. A stack of sheets of material for writing on substantially as specifically described in the accompanying drawings.
