Abstract
A backing panel 10 for fitting behind a number plate 18 on a motor vehicle has a recess 16 into which the number plate 18 is fitted leaving a frame around the number plate. The backing panel has apertures 20 to enable the panel to be secured to the vehicle, and the panel also has platform areas (26, 28, 30, Figure 1) to which the back of the number plate can be secured by adhesive. There will normally also be an area which forms part of the frame where an advertising message can be displayed. <IMAGE>
Description
A Backing Panel for a Vehicle Number Plate
This invention relates to a backing panel for a vehicle number plate. The backing panel is fitted behind the number plate itself and provides a frame around the plate as well as a space on which a car dealer can display an advertising message.
Backing panels of this general type are known. They are secured in place by being sandwiched between the number plate itself and the vehicle bodywork. The number plate is fastened to the vehicle bodywork by fasteners which pass through the number plate, through the backing panel and into the bodywork. Because the number plate has to be drilled with holes, the position of which is different for each model of vehicle, there is an element of skill involved and a possibility of mistake. Furthermore, the heads of the fasteners are visible from the face of the number plate and detract from its appearance as well as making the plate difficult to clean. It is known to cover the fastener heads with coloured caps, the colour being chosen in accordance with the colour of the number plate at that particular position on the number plate, but this is not very satisfactory.
According to the invention, there is provided a backing panel for a vehicle number plate, the panel comprising a recess defined by a back wall and side walls for receiving a number plate, apertures in the back wall for securing the panel to a vehicle body, and number plate support surfaces which lie parallel to the back wall and stand proud of the back wall such that the rear face of a number plate can be adhesively secured to the number plate support surfaces with the number plate lying in the recess and surrounded by a frame formed by the side walls.
The use of adhesive to secure the plate in the recess in the panel allows the mounted plate to present an uninterrupted front face which substantially improves its appearance. Because the support surfaces are proud of the back wall, the heads of the fasteners which secure the panel to the bodywork will not interfere with the back of the number plate as this is stuck in position. The panel also makes the fitting of the number plate to the vehicle simpler and more foolproof.
The panel preferably includes a display area, outside the recess, on which a message can be displayed. This could for example be the name of the motor dealer who supplied the car. The display area can be a continuation of one of the side walls.
The support surfaces preferably comprise a number of different platform areas. One such area may be a peripheral area extending around the edge of the recess, just inside the side walls.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which;
Figure 1 is a front view of a backing panel in
accordance with the invention; and
Figure 2 is a cross-section through the panel of
Figure 1 on the lines II-II.
Figure 1 shows the panel 10 without a number plate fitted.
The panel has a back wall 12 and a continuous side wall or walls 14. The side walls stand up from the back wall 12 to form a recess 16 which is dimensioned so that it just accommodates a standard number plate 18 (Figure 2).
Regulations in most countries specify precisely the overall size of a number plate, so the necessary size of the recess can be ascertained with certainty. The depth of the recess will also be in a definite relationship to the thickness of the number plate. Preferably the height of the side walls 14 will be such that the front surface of the number plate just stands proud of the tops of the walls.
The back wall 12 has holes, slots or other apertures 20 for fastenings which will secure the panel to vehicle bodywork. Since the back wall will be completely concealed when a number plate is fitted, it is possible to provide sufficient holes to affix the panel to any type of known car so that the panel can be universally fitted. Figure 2 shows two screw fastenings 22 being used to secure the panel to the bodywork 24 of a vehicle.
Those parts of the back wall where fixing apertures are not needed are raised relative to the rest. These areas comprise a central platform area 26, a peripheral platform area 28 and two auxiliary platform areas 30 located within the areas where the fastening apertures are found.
The height of the platform areas relative to the back wall 12 will be such that the heads of fasteners (such as the fastenings 22) will lie below the level of the platform on which the number plate will be stuck.
To use this panel, the panel alone is first secured to the vehicle using the appropriate fixings in the appropriate holes as dictated by the vehicle on which the panel is being used. Since there is no need to drill the number plate itself, this stage of the fixing is straightforward.
Once the panel is fitted, the number plate is located in the panel and is held there by adhesive between the flat back face of the panel and one or more of the platform areas 26, 28, 30. It is particularly convenient to use double-sided adhesive tape, but this is not essential and other type of adhesive attachment could be used. The large platform areas mean that the exact position where the adhesive is applied is not critical.
In the finished state, where the number plate is mounted, the side walls of the panel provide a narrow frame around the plate itself which enhances the appearance of the plate. A lip 32 at the bottom edge of the panel allows a car dealer to apply his name permanently to the car without encroaching on the surface of the number plate itself.
