Abstract

A telescopic commercial vehicle safety support strut has an outer section (3) and an inner section (10) and can be used for the purpose of safety support for any raised tipping vehicle body (8). A sword pin (5) has a dual purpose. to secure the strut to bracket (7) in the stowed position, and, when the support unit is in use to safely lock sections (3) and (10) together. The strut is pivotally mounted in chassis bracket (1) via a shackle pin (2), allowing section (3) to pivot through 90 DEG . <IMAGE>

Description

COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SAFETY SUPPORT STRUTT This invention relates to a body support strutt for commercial tipping vehicles.
Commercial tipping vehicles require the bodies to be raised for both repairs and routine maintenance.
The safety supports, which may be steel tubes or lengths of timber, have to be put in position between the vehicle chassis and the underside of the raised body to safeguard against any failure in the tipper ram unit hydraulic system.
According to the present invention the safety support strutt is permanently attached to the vehicle chassis. When the body is raised the support strutt is released from a holding bracket on the vehicle chassis and raised to meet the locating block mounted on the underside of the tipped body sub-frame structure.
The support strutt may be extended to accommodate various heights as required.
Figure 1 : Shows in perspective the support strutt in the stowed position when not in use.
Figure 2 : Illustrates the support strutt in use with raised body.
Referring to the drawing! the support unit comprises a bracket 1) bolted to the vehicle chassis (4).
The support unit box section 23) is secured to chassis bracket (1) by means of a shackle pin (2), thus allowing unit (3) to pivot through 900.
When not in use the support strutt internal section (10) is secured to chassis bracket (7) with a sword pin (5) through hole (6).
When the support unit (3) is required to support vehicle raised body (8) the sword pin (5) is removed from hole (6) in bracket (7).
The support strutt (4) is then swivelled upwards and unit (10) extended to the required height to meet with the locating block (9) on the underside of vehicle body (8).
The sword pin (5) is then located in hole (11) in the support strutt (3).
To return the support strutt O; and (3) to the not in use position, the steps described above are carried out in reverse sequence.

Claims (3)

1. A commercial vehicle safety support strutt is permanently attached to the vehicle chassis, comprising a bracket bolted to the vehicle chassis to which the strutt section is attached. When required for use the strutt may be extended and secured in a locating block on the underside of the vehicle body.
2. A commercial vehicle safety support strutt as claimed in claim (1) wherein extended means the inner section is drawn out of the main strutt.
3. A commercial vehicle safety support strutt as claimed in claim (1) or claim (2), wherein a sword pin is located in the rear chassis bracket when not in use, also the same sword pin is used to secure outer and inner strutts when in use.
