Abstract

An exhaust system is suspended by various mountings along its length. The method of mounting an exhaust varies from vehicle to vehicle. The mounting system of the invention allows a section of bendable strap material to wrap around an non specific exhaust box, and accept movable, for example slide-on mounting brackets which will enable the exhaust box to be suspended under the vehicle in question. The strap will then be loosely fastened using a fastener, the system will be offered up under the vehicle and the slide on mounting adjusted for the best fit. The fastener will then be tightened, thereby locking the moveable mountings and making a tight fit around the exhaust box. <IMAGE>

Description

MODULAR EXHAUST BOX BELT SYSTEM This invention relates to a Multi Fit Exhaust Box Belt system.
Exhaust Box bands are a means to suspend a section of an exhaust system securely underneath a vehicle. They do this by clamping around the silencer box tightly, which is achieved by the box band being pre shaped to fit the system being fitted, the exhaust system is then affixed by means of special hooks on the box band and other parts of the exhaust system. As a result of this the exhaust box band whilst doing the same basic job has developed to meet the shapes of the different exhaust boxes. This means that some box bands have by their nature become complicated and therefore expensive to manufacture, stock and buy.
Looked at objectively the only special section of a box band is the means by which the band and therefore the exhaust system is connected to the vehicle structure. This means that the metal 'band that actually embraces the exhaust box is only fit for the particular application for which it has been made. This accounts for a large portion of the expense as a method of fitting and tightening the band has to be fitted as well.
According to the present invention there is provided a belt which can easily adapt to the shape of the exhaust box to be installed. A universal fastener will connect both ends of the belt. The belt wi'; accept slide on sections which will have affixed to them the appropiate mounting for the vehicle application. With the belt section loosely MODULAR EXHAUST BOX BELT SYSTEM (Continued) connected the slide on mounting section(s) will be placed in the appropriate position to mount the system correctly. The fastener will then be tightened, thereby securely clamping the box band and securing the slide on section. The box belt will then be ready to support the exhaust system in the normal manner.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective a typical application of the invention on an non specit exhaust system.
Figure 2 is an exploded diagram of the box belt system.
Figure 3 is a sideways perspective of the invention.
Referring to the drawings the following points can be made.
With reference to Fig 2 the box belt system comprises a belt section of malleable material 1. The belt section accepts the slide on mounting point(s) for the vehicle application concerned 2. The belt is then tightened by means of a fastener 3 which draws the belt tight. This fastener may be of mechanical or non mechanical means.
In order to fit the box belt system, firstly a section of the belt must be cut to be the appropriate length to encompass the silencer box system 1. This is then shaped around the silencer box to approximate the shape of the particular vehicle application. See Fig 2. Depending upon the vehicle application slide on section(s) 2 bearing the appropriate mountings, are attached to the belt and roughly positioned.See Fig 2.
The belt and its mounting(s) is placed around the silencer box and a universal fastener 3 is loosely assembled allowing the moveable mountings 2 to be finally positioned. The system is then connectedto the vehicle. When the exhaust is correctly positioned by adjusting the moveable mountings 2 the fastener can then be tightened. This has the effect of anchoring the moveable mountings and making the band fit tightly around the silencer box. See Fig 1.
