Abstract
A portable cutter, which provides a system of cutting at an angle (typically 45 degrees) the openings in picture mounts easily, accurately and safely, comprises a baseplate 2 an angled slide 1 and cutting knife holder 5 with pointed knife (8, Fig. 2). The mount is placed between the base and the angled slide and the knife holder is positioned on the slide opposite a corner. The pointed knife 8 is then pushed through the mount and the knife holder is gripped or pulled along the slide to effect the cutting. The resulting cut is angled along its length and at each end. The cutting action causes a downward pressure which holds the mount whilst the knife point is protected by entering a groove 4. One stop prevents the knife rotating in use and another locates it in an out-of-use position. <IMAGE>
Description
MOVNT CUTTER
The invention relates to a cutting device for producing the openings in picture mounts Mounts are used as a surround to painting, photographs or other framed articles.
The opening in the mount is generally cut at an angle ,typically at 45 degrees, in order to avoid a shaddow and to present a clean edge.
There are various e: ist i ng mount cutters which produce such out edge from complex professional devices to simple types. The former are expensive and the latter more difficult to use and slower in operation since they have to be used in conjunction with separate staigh-edges and cutting bases.
According to the present invention there is provided a p portable hand operated cutting device comprising a slide arranged at an angle and located on a base plate equiped wit.h a suitably placed cutting groove. Carried on the slide is a knife holder fitted with a pointed cutting knife the holder being free to be pulled along to effect the cutting action.
The device enables the desired angled cut to be made easily, accurately and safely at reasonable cost.
specific embodiment of the invention is described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which :
Fig. 1 shows in perspective an angled slide, a base plate with a cutting grove and a knife holder carrying the cutting knife.
Fig. 2 shows a more detailed view of the knife holder.
Fig. 3 shows the device as in Fig 1 but with a typical mount- in position,
Referring to Fig 1. The unit comprises a slide [ 1 ] arranged at at an angle and supported on a base plate [2] with two locations pegs [3] to prevent undesireable side movement. The base has a suitably placed cutting grove to allow the knife to project through the mount and so avoid damage to the point.
Referring to Fig 2. Carried on the the angled slide is a cutting knife holder C53 which is lipped [6] to sit- on the top edge of the slide and provided with a back plate [7] to act as guide and also as a convenient gripping place for the operaters hand.
4 cutting knife [7] is secured to the knife holder by a clamping nut E83 which grips near the point to give rigidity.
Continued from page 2.
The knife may be single pointed or double pointed as shown with the sharpening at one side only. A stop [10] is artrangeg to prevent the knife turning when cutting.
As a safety device when not in use provision is made for the knife to be pivoted up to a second stop C113 which then positions the knife point behind the face of the knife holder as shown C123.
Referring to Fig 3 Here a inount is shown in position between base and slide with the knife holder being moved by hand and with the knife point projecting into and through the mount and with the third side of the opening being cut.
Operation
In use the mount is placed between the angled slide and the base Clines will have previously been marked on the mount to indicate the opening required these lines being continued to the edges
The line to be cut is aligned with the grove in the base.
The knife holder is then moved by hand until the point of the knife rests on the corner furthest away. The point is then pushed through the mount until the movement is arrested by the knife holder lip meeting the top of the slide.
With light downward pressure the knife holder is then pulled along the slide to the second corner
The mount is then repositioned at right angles and the process repeated to effect the second cut.The cuts are repeated until the centre opening is completely seperated.
Claims (4)
1. A portable hand operated mount cutting device which provides a means of cutting the openings in picture and other mounts and comprising a baseplate with a groove to accept t.he point of a cutting knife and supporting a slide which is located to prevent side movement and arranged at an angle to the base and on which is mounted a knife carried in a knife holder which is free to slide and thereby out at an angle and so arranged that t-he cutting action causes the mount to te clamped between the base and the slide.
2. A portable hand operated mount cutting device as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the cutting groove in the baseplate is replaced by a cutting mat placed between baseplate and sl i de.
A portable hand operated mount cutting device as in claimed in claim 1 wherein a a cutting mat is introduced between the base and the slide.
4. hand opera ted portable mount c utter substantially as described herein with reference to
Figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawings.
