Description
^110789 Launch control system for guided weapons The invention relates to
a launch control system for guided weapons, which is linked to light and/or thermal sensors.
A launch control system of this kind has been disclosed in DE-OS 34 02 167. The object of the latter was to recognize a nuclear attack in the case where several physical conditions detectable by sensors have occurred in order to then initiate a counterattack. However, that prior disclosure does not consider the manner in which guided weaponry launched in counterattack was to be guided to the target and how the control assembly was to be operated in the presence of artificial decoy objects.
An object of the present invention is to provide and/or retrofit launch systems for guided weapons so that, if infrared decoy radiation appears in the region of a target-oriented optical axis of the device, a warning can be issued at least before the otheXwise intended launching and permit further measure to be -taken.
According to this invention there is provided launch control system for guided weapons, comprising Me110789 warning means responsive to light and/or thermal radiation sensors, an infrared locating device aimed towards a target and for producing an output signal representing intensity of at least one infrared source located in the region of the target, comparator means responsive to said output signal exceeding a threshold for producing a warning signal causing corresponding display to operating personnel and/or automatic initiation of a counter-measure in the launch control system to prevent a misfiring.
A suitable infra-red locating device comprises in series-connection an infrared filter, a rotating modulator and an infrared detector for producing a signal to be further processed.
The comparator may have its threshold preset or adaptively controlled; and the warning signal may serve to operate acoustic and/or optical alarm means. Preferred optical alarm means may provide direction indication for a control response.
An optical alarm means comprising an image display may respond to direction-indicating signals from the infra-re-d locating device by shifting effective:f:Leld o f view.
1 ^110789 Particular attainable advantages include dealing with presence of infra- red decoys in the region of the target, particularly avoiding mis-launch at the very outset and selecting a different target rapidly indicated to the operating personnel.
An example of embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and is now described in more detail.
The single Figure of the drawing shows the greatly simplified block circuit diagram of an infrared locator device QA with a warning device connected thereto.
The locator device consists of a seriesconnection of an optical infrared filter 1, a rotating slotted diaphragm (reticle) 2 which acts as a modulator, as well as an infrared detector 3. The output signal of the infrared detector 3 is amplified and filtered at 4 in a known manner, before it is fed to signal processing circuitry 5. The signal processing circuitry 5 -provides, in addition to other output signals, position signals X and Y which indicate the position of infrared sources relative to the main axis of the infrared sensor, and a further output signal A which is JMell0789 proportional to the intensity of the received infrared radiation.
This output signal A goes to a variable threshold value circuit 6. The threshold assigned to the output signal A may either be set as a fixed value or adaptively controlled in response to a further control signal not described in detail. Output signal W, produced when the signal threshold is exceeded, can be used to actuate various devices as a warning signal W.
In the simplest case, the warning signal W actuates an optical and/or acoustic alarm unit 7a,b to alert operating personnel as to operation of the locator device OA.
As a further indicator facility a viewing unit 10 is shown, and which is linked to the starting device. If the warning signal appears, this can be displayed to operating personnel, for example on the"videoscreen 9. Further display modes can be provided using the directional signals X,Y of the locator device. For example, that could involve luminous directional arrows 8 or a special imaging mode on the screen 9. Further, a manual or automatic shift to a different viewing field could also be provided.
-k- 1 JMell0789 In all cases, operating personnel should be prompted by the warning signal in the event of appearance of an IR-decoy hindering successful firing of a guided weapon and can take appropriate action, e.g. aborting launching procedure or shifting to an unobstructed target. It is equally possible to initiate such action automatically by use of the directional signals X,Y and the warning signal W from a signal S to starting device proper, thus preventing a misfire.
