Abstract

A therapeutic pillow 10 constituted by a secure combination of resilient material portions of different material densities, these portions being namely a rectangular base portion 11, two parallel edge portions 12 and 13, each having an inwardly facing convex surface 14 and 15 respectively, and fitting snugly between the portions 12 and 13 a central fillet 16 serving as a user's head supporting portion. The material density of one or both of the edge portions is lower than that of the base portion, and the material density of the central fillet is lower than that of the base portion and that of one or both of the edge portions. The resilient material may be a plastics foam. The combination may be secured by an adhesive and covered in polyester wadding. <IMAGE>

Description

THERAPEUTIC PILLOW This invention concerns a therapeutic pillow for head and neck support of a user sleeping or relaxing, on a bed for example, in a generally horizontal position.
Sleeping with the neck bent forward, sideways or twisted can cause the ligaments and nerve roots in the neck to be passively stretched due to distortion of the spine. This can cause pain in otherwise healthy persons and the pain will be exacerbated in persons with musculoskeletal disorders of the spine.
Prevention of such pain depends on persons being able to maintain a neutral position when sleeping or relaxing so that the spine is relatively straight and relaxed.
An object of the present invention is to propose a therapeutic pillow which allows the user's spine to adopt a neutral unstressed position when the user is sleeping or relaxing.
With this object in view the present invention provides a therapeutic pillow comprising a base portion of resilient material having two parallel edge portions of resilient material each with an inwardly facing convex surface, the material density of one or both of said edge portions being lower than the material density of the base portion, and a central fillet providing a head supporting portion of resilient material, which fits between the two parallel edge portions of the base portion, the material density of which is lower than that of the base portion and that of one or both of the edge portions.
Advantageously, the base portion is a high density resilient plastics foam, one or both of the edge portions are a medium density resilient plastics foam, and the central fillet is a low density high resilience plastics foam.
Alternatively, the central fillet may be a low density high resilience plastics wadding material.
Preferably the base portion, the edge portions and the central fillet are securely combined e.g. by an adhesive, and the combination is covered in polyester wadding.
The combination forming the pillow of the present invention provides an interactive system whereby the user's head and neck are supported so that the neck muscles are relaxed and the spinal column is brought into a neutral, non load bearing position.
Furthermore, the pillow automatically accomodates user's of different head sizes and head weights.
However, in order to make it useful for users with painful musculoskeletal disorders of the spine e.g.
arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, advantageously the material densities of edge portions are different from each other.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompany drawing in which:- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the therapeutic pillow, without a covering, of the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the pillow shown in F,g. 1.
It will be seen from the drawing that the preferred pillow 10 comprises a rectangular base portion 11, two parallel edge portions 12 and 13, each oblong in shape and each having an inwardly facing convex surface 14 and 15 respectively, and a central fillet 16 serving as a head supporting portion two parallel sides of which are concave in shape to fit snugly between the edge portions 12 and 13.
The base portion 11, the edge portions 12 and 13 and the central fillet 16 are securely combined by e.g.
adhesive. They are all made of a resilient plastics foam of different densities. Thus the base portion 11 is made of a high density resilient plastics foam, one or both of the edge portions is/are made of a medium density resilient plastics foam and the fillet 16 is made of a low density high resilience plastics foam.
The fillet 16 may, alternatively, be made of a low density high reesilience plastics wadding material.
The combination is encased in polyester wadding (not shown) and can be covered by the usual pillow case (not shown).
The combination provides a pillow which fulfills the object of the invention in that when in use for sleeping or relaxing it allows the user's spine to adopt a neutral unstressed position.

Claims (7)

1. A therapeutic pillow comprising a base portion of resilient material having two parallel edge portions of resilient material each with an inwardly facing convex surface, the material density of one or both of said edge portions being lower than the material density of the base portion, and a central fillet providing a head supporting portion of resilient material, which fits between the two parallel edge portions of the base portion, the material density of which is lower than that of the base portion and that of one or both of the edge portions.
2. A pillow as claimed in claim 1 wherein the base portion is a high density resilient plastics foam, one or both of the edge portions are a medium density resilient plastics foam, and the central fillet is a low density high resilience plastics foam.
