Abstract

A method of welding an applique to fabric comprises assembling a layer of conductor material (26), placing the fabric 18 on top of the conductor material 26 and then adding a layer of compressible material (22) such as polyurethene foam, (thermoplastic), an applique (20) and a layer of barrier material (24). At least one of the applique 20, compressible layer 22 and fabric 18 is latently adhesive so that when pressure is applied in preselected bonding areas and a dielectric field applied across the layers the applique 20 is bonded to the fabric 18 by the latently adhesive layer in the bonding zones. The fabric 18 may be a textile garment, the applique 20 may be a polyurethane film, the material 24 may be a silicon coated material and material 26 may be polytetrafluoroethylene coated material. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: Improvements relating to the welding of appliques The present invention relates to the welding of appliques to fabrics.
A problem associated with fabrics to which appliques have been welded is the resistance of the welded appliques to damage during dry cleaning of the fabric. Hitherto, the dry cleaning of fabrics to which appliques have been welded has resulted in the weakening of the applique welds and the appliques becoming partially or completely detached from the fabric after the fabric has undergone relatively few cleaning processes.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved method of welding appliques to fabrics.
A method of welding an applique to a support comprises providing an assembly of a layer of conductor material, a support layer, a layer of compressible material, an applique layer and a layer of barrier material, wherein at least one of said applique, compressible and support layers is latently adhesive; subjecting said assembly to pressure in preselected bonding zones in which said applique layer is to be bonded to said support layer, and to a dialectric field to activate said latently adhesive layer in said zones to bond said applique layer to said support layer. Preferably the layer of compressible material is thermoplastics material such as p.u.r. 2152.
The present invention is further described hereinafter, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which diagrammatically illustrates high frequency welding of an applique to fabric material.
The drawing illustrates diagrammatically an apparatus for high-frequency heat welding or bonding used in carrying out the method according to the present invention. The apparatus has two radio frequency electrodes 10, 12 movable towards and away from one another and which are coupled to a high frequency generator 14. A die 16 is secured to the upper electrode 10, the die being formed with welding ledges along which the applique is to be welded to the supporting fabric.
The support fabric 18 which may conveniently be a textile garment is placed on the lower electrode 12 and an applique 20 which is to be welded to the support 18 is placed on the latter with an intervening layer 22 of thermoplastics material such as a polyurethene foam. Typically, the polyurethane foam is 3.0 mm thick whilst the applique material is a polyurethane film such as p.u.r. 2152.
A barrier material 24 is placed between the applique 20 and the die 16 and a conductor material 26 is placed between the lower electrode 12 and the support 18. The barrier material 24 protects the surface of the applique from potential arcing or crazing and is conveniently a silicon coated material such as terylene. The conductor material 26 is conveniently PTFE (teflon) coated material such as terylene.
It has been found that best results are achieved by lower power settings for longer welding cycles of the welding apparatus with very heavy pressures, than for conventional welding.
