Description
DESCRIPTION QUARTER-TURN PAWL FASTENER
The present invention relates to quarter-turn pawl fasteners such as a commonly used, for example, to retain doors or covers on cabinets or the like.
More particularly, the invention relates to such a fastener having the feature of adjustability to enable changes in the spacing between the two members being fastened together.
EP-A-0047157 discloses a fastener of this general type comprising a bolt having a head and a screw-threaded shank; a retainer element or assembly threadably secured to the shank as a friction fit thereon, the retainer element or assembly having a pair of abutments for engagement with the rear of the second of two members, through an aperture in which the retainer element or assembly locates in use, the retainer element or assembly including at least one pair of stops for engagement with the sides of the aperture in the second member or a corresponding aperture in the first member through which the fastener is mounted in use, to define the inoperative and operative positions of the retainer element or assembly, and a compression spring located in use between the retainer element or assembly and an opposed surface of the first member to retain the retainer element or assembly in its inoperative position, under the action of friction, when the retainer element or assembly is disengaged from the first member. Whilst such a fastener can work satisfactorily, it has to be assembled at the aperture in the first member, in other words it has to be assembled in-situ.
According to the present invention a fastener of this known prior art type further comprises a retainer sleeve located between the retainer element and the head of the bolt, the retainer sleeve having a bore of non-circular cross-section in which is located the compression spring and one end of the retainer element, the stops on the retainer element engaging with complementary formations in the bore of the sleeve or the aperture in which the fastener is located in use in order to define the inoperative and operative positions of the retainer element. By such means, the fastener may be pre-assembled in large measure before being offered up to the aperture in the first member (on which it may be secured by means of a retaining nut or washer or the like).
In one embodiment the retainer sleeve includes a portion which is arranged to extend through the aperture in the first member, to be located in position by a flat or similar formation on the external surface of the sleeve, the sleeve having a head portion in which the head of the bolt is located and a screw-threaded shank for cooperation with a retainer nut to secure the retainer sleeve in position on the first member. In order to effect fixing on the first member, the fastener, preassembled but for the retainer nut, is offered up to the aperture in the first member which is formed with a pair of flats or the like for engagement with corresponding flats on the sleeve, and the nut is then attached on the screw threaded shank from the rear of the first member.In order for this to be achievable the lateral extent of the abutments on the retainer element is arranged to be less than the diameter of the sleeve shank.
In a second embodiment the sleeve is substantially cup-shaped and is not arranged to be fixedly secured to the first member. In this case, the exterior of the sleeve may be formed with flats for cooperation with a spanner or similar tool, the stops on the retainer element locating in one position only within a bore in the sleeve and the sleeve itself being rotatable between inoperative and operative positions in order to lock the first and second members together.
In both embodiments, adjustability for different thicknesses or to achieve pull-up is achieved by means of the screw threaded engagement of the bolt with the retainer element, and fixing and operation are straightforward and uncomplicated.
Two examples of fasteners constructed in accordance with the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a composite longitudinal section through a first fastener when assembled and in use;
Figure 2 illustrates the shape of the apertures in the respective support and panel on which the fastener is located;
Figure 3 illustrates an end view of the faastener;
Figure 4 illustrates a plan view of the fastener;
Figure 5 illustrates a longitudinal section through a second example in an open position;
Figure 6 illustrates a partial section through the fastener of Figure 5 in a closed position;
Figure 7 is a external view corresponding to
Figure 6;
Figure 8 is a plan view from beneath the second fastener;
Figure 9 is a plan view from above of the second fastener;;
Figures 10 and 11 are orthogonal views of the sleeve of the second fastener in longitudinal section;
Figure 12 is an end view of the sleeve; and,
Figures 13 and 14 illustrate a side view and an end view of the retainer element of the second fastener.
The first example shown in Figure 1 is particularly intended for use in closing a door panel 1 against the frame 2 of a cabinet or the like, the fastener locating on first and second members 3 and 4 respectively attached to or formed integrally with the door 1 and frame 2.
The fastener has a retainer element 5 which has a pair of laterally extending pawl abutments 6 at one end and, at the other end, a pair of laterally extending stops 7. The end of the retainer element having the stops 7 locates in a bore 8 in a retainer sleeve 9 and a compression spring 10 is disposed between the end of the bore 8 and the top (as shown) of the retainer element 5. The spring causes the retainer element and sleeve to be extended as far as possible, in order to help locate the pawl abutments in a suitable position to be subsequently rotated behind the second member. The retainer element 5 has an internal screw threaded bore 11 which engages with the external screw thread 12a of the shank 12 of a bolt 13 which extends through the retainer sleeve 9, its head 14 being located in a recess 15 in a head 16 of the sleeve.To provide sufficient frictional engagement between the retainer element and the bolt, the bolt may have a plastics patch or the retainer element may have a helicoil insert with an upset thread engaging the bolt thread. The sleeve has a screw threaded shank 17 with a pair of flats 18 which positively angularly locate the sleeve within the aperture 19 in the panel 3, the sleeve being retained on the panel 3 by a retainer nut 20 which is screw threaded onto the shank 17 after the fastener has been passed into the aperture 19. It will be noticed that the lateral extent of the abutments 6 is less than the overall diameter of the screw threaded shank 17 of the sleeve 9 so that the nut 20 can pass over the pawl abutments.
The aperture 21 in the member 4 on the frame 2 is elongate so that rotation of the retainer element 5 can locate the abutments 6 behind a portion of the support member 4 in the operative position.
The retainer element is confined to rotate only through about 900 between its operative and inoperative positions by means of the stops 7 engaging shoulders 8' formed in the bore 8. A pair of shoulders 8', each extending over approximately 90e, is provided so that two angular positions, spaced 90O apart, can be adopted by the retainer element within the sleeve.
Such a fastener is able to provide for relatively high ultimate loads whilst still enabling quick release and re-useability and can be manufactured without high cost. The fastener is adjustable by means of the thread of the bolt engaging with the thread of the retainer element and against the bias of the spring 10 which also provides a further measure of frictional engagement between the two so that rotation of the bolt rotates the retainer element into the desired position.
The second example illustrated in Figures 6 onwards has, overall, a fairly similar construction, and like parts are given the same reference numeral.
The second fastener is designed specifically for attaching a pair of panels or members 3, 4 together, the panels having identical apertures 21 through which the fastener locates and being represented by dashed lines in Figure 6. For example, the fastener may be used to attach elements of office furniture such as screens, cabinets or the like. For simplicity and to provide reversability, standard size apertures 21 are desired which should be of a shape generally similar to those shown in
Figure 2.
The fastener has a retainer element 5, also shown separately in Figures 13 and 14, with laterally extending pawl abutments 6 and has a screw-threaded bore 11 for engagement with the screw thread 12a of the shank 12 of a bolt 13. The pawl abutments 6 are provided with sharp points 6a which cut into the panel 4 when the fastener is tightened so as to provide electrical earth contact. Six such points 6a are shown in the example.
The retainer sleeve 9, shown in Figures 10 to 12, is generally cup-shaped and of circular shape, in this example but includes a pair of knurled side flats 22 by means of which the sleeve 9 may be gripped and rotated. The sleeve 9 also has six sharp points 17a at the end of its shank 17, which function in an identical way to the points 6a of the element 5.
A compression spring 10 is positioned within the sleeve in order to bias the retainer element outwards, but also provides friction between the screw threads 11 and 12a so that the fastener can be rotated by the bolt alone. The element 5 has an elongate shank having a generally lozenge shaped cross-section to provide stops 7 which are located within the non-circular bore 8 in the sleeve 9 in order to fix the rotational position of the retainer element 5 relative to the sleeve 9.
The sleeve 9 has a pair of small locking shoulders 23 which are positioned and configured so as to drop into the aperture 21 in the adjacent panel when the fastener is rotated to the locked position.
This provides an indication to the user that the fastener is in the locked position and also prevents re-rotation of the fastener, for example due to vibration, out of the locked position, without unscrewing of the bolt. The shoulders 23 may be chamfered to assist rotation in the opposite direction by the operator and to avoid the need for the operator to pull out the sleeve before undoing the fastener.
The sleeve 9 also has a pair of eyed protrusions 24 through which a tie 25 passes. This tie 25 can be used to retain the pre-assembled fastener on the panel during transit in a position adjacent the aperture, so as to be ready for rapid assembly and immediate use.
In use, the assembled fastener is presented to the aligned apertures in the panels 3 and 4 and the sleeve 9 is then rotated until the abutments formed by the lozenge-shaped cross section engage the sides of the apertures 21. Thereafter, as desired, the bolt 13 can be rotated in order to pull up the abutments 6 against the rear of the panel or member 4.
Such a fastener provides an immediate indication of rotation of the retainer element into the correct and secure operative position by means of the rotation of the sleeve 9 while enabling pull-up to be achieved and allowing the fastener to be fully pre-assembled before attachment.
