Abstract

A cold pad comprises a shell (12) which is filled with a fluid (22). The fluid remains malleable even at temperatures of about minus 20 DEG C. The outer surface (14) is covered with a heat insulating material (16). Strips 18, in use, cooperate with a complementary strip to hold the cold pad in place. The fluid may include spherical, polished particles, which produce a massaging effect during movement of the pad. <IMAGE>

Description

A COLD PAD The present invention relates to a cold pad which finds a therapeutic application in treating a variety of injuries in humans and animals.
The application of cold objects as a medical treatment is known and well documented in medical, physiotherapy and veterinary textbooks.
According to the present invention there is provided a cold pad comprising a sealed shell made of flexible impermeable material which is filled with a fluid which remains malleable at temperatures of at least minus 150C and preferably down to minus 20 C. Such a cold pad finds application as an adjunct for physiotherapy and/or ultrasound treatment. Such a pad is also suitable for treatment of injuries including, for example muscle repairs, bruising, sprains, tendon injuries and haematomas.
The cold pad is suitably used as a cold compress.
Preferably the cold pad has an inner surface which is adapted to contact directly the anatomy of the patient, allowing heat exchange and an outer surface which most preferably comprises a thermally insulating material to restrain heat exchange with the atmosphere. Preferably the pad is provided with fixing means so that it may be secured to the patient's anatomy. One example of such fixing means are Velcro* strips.
* Trade Mark A cold pad according to the present invention also finds applications as a cold massage pad. Such a massage pad is enhanced by the provision of spherical particles within the fluid. These particles suitably have polished surfaces which enable their free movement within the fluid at all times.
The shell is suitably made of a heavy duty plastics material. It is preferably of a generally rectangular shape.
An embodiment of the application is now described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a pad according to one embodi#ment of the present invention; Figure 2 shows a cross-section of the pad along the line Il-Il in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a view of the underside of the pad in Figure 1; Figure 4 is a plan view of the pad of Figure 1; and Figure 5 shows a fixing strip for use with the pad.
Figure 1 shows a pad 10 comprising a shell 12 made of a heavy duty plastics material. The inner face of the pad is adapted to contact the injured surface and enable application of the cold treatment. The outer surface 14 is covered in a thermally insulating material 16. This is designed to reduce by heat exchange with the atmosphere so that the pad does not lose its effectiveness over quickly.
Attachment means, provided by Velcro strips 18 are provided on top of the insulating layer. The fixing strip 20, as shown in Figure 5, is of the mating type with the strips attached to the pad. Fixing strips can be provided in a variety of lengths to enable the pad to be attached to a variety of parts of the anatomy.
The shell is filled with a fluid 22 which remains malleable even after being immersed for some time in, for example, a domestic deep freezer and so brought to a temperature of between minus 150C and minus 20 C.
The pad may be used as a cold compress by applying it for example to an animal's leg and securing it in place by winding the fixing strip around the pad and the leg.
Spherical particles (not shown) may be included in the fluid. Such particles have a polished surface which enables their free movement within the pressure area at all times. Their presence enables a massaging effect to be created during movement and also enables the pad to be used as a cold massage pad.

Claims (8)

CLAIMS:
1. A cold pad comprising a sealed shell of flexible impermeable material filled with a fluid which is malleable at temperatures of minus 15 CC.
2. A pad according to claim 1 wherein the fluid is malleable at a temperature of minus 20 CC.
3. A pad according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein one surface of the pad comprises a thermally insulating material.
4. A pad according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the shell is a heavy duty plastics material ultimately covered on one side with the thermally insulating material.
5. A pad according to any one of claims 1 to 4 which further comprises a fixing means.
6. A pad according to claim 5 wherein the fixing means comprise strips of a first type affixed to the outer surface and a securing strip of a second type which mates with the first type of strip.
7. A pad according to any one of the preceding claims wherein spherical particles are dispersed within the fluid.
8. A cold pad substantially as described herein with reference to the drawings.
