BOOK HOLDER This invention relates to a book holder.

I have found that after reading a paperback book for a while, the springy nature of the spine causes some discomfort due to the continual pressure which has to be applied by the hands. Also, at least one hand has to be in use all the time.

The addition of a reading light to the book holder will allow one to read if ones partner or room-mate wishes to go to sleep, or in a car at night.

According to the present invention there is provided a book holder comprising a main frame on which the book rests, two arms fixed to the main-frame so as to be adjustable to hold the average paperback book firmly and at any page, and as an optional extra to the present invention a reading light with means of attachment to the book holder.

A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which : Figure 1 shows the book holder in side view; Figure 2 shows the book holder in plan view; Figure 3 shows the book holder in perspective with reading light attachment; Figure 4 shows the book holder in side view with book in position. Referring to the drawing the book holder comprises a main-frame 1 to support the book with means to accommodate the spine 2 and arms 3 attached to the main-frame 1 so as to be adjustable. The reading light 5, extra to the invention, comprises shade, bulb, adjustable stem 8 and battery case 6. The battery case 6 can be fitted to the underside of the main-frame 1 in the spine supports 2.

In order to fit the book to the frame the book is opened at the required page and placed on the main-frame 1 with the left and right hand pages positioned under the respective arms 3. The spine of the book should be fitted snugly along or over the spine supports 2.

The arms can then be adjusted to hold the pages down, and to lie along the outer margins of each page.

Due to the pages of the book being turned over the spine will slowly roll over the spine supports 2 and so adjustment to the arms 3 will be necessary every so many pages to keep the arms lying along the outer margins of the pages. The arms may also have to be lifted slightly on each turn of a page. The arms raise up and down as indicated by arrows 9 and move along the main-frame as indicated by arrows 10.

Claims (6)

1. A book holder comprising a main-frame on which the book rests, and made long so that it can be held by the reader when in use.

Two adjustable arms to hold the book open at any page.

2. A book holder as claimed in claim one wherein the arms to hold the book open can be adjusted to lie down the outer margins of the open pages by sliding at their attachment 4 with the main-frame.

3. A book holder as claimed in claim one or claim two wherein the arms hold the book open by means of a spring at a suitable tension, or an adjustable clamp system 4.

4. A book holder as claimed in any preceding claim wherein adjustment can be made to accommodate any paperback book of average size.

5. A book holder as claimed in any preceding claim wherein a light suitable for reading and a battery holder can be attached to the underside of the main-frame along the spine supports 2.
