Abstract
An electronic calculator 1 has a generally planar front surface and includes a lens portion 8 to act as a magnifying glass. The lens portion may include a Fresnel lens or a convex lens extending out of the front surface. It is preferred that the lens portion be an integral part of a body 2 of the calculator. Preferably, the body and lens portion are moulded from a transparent plastics material in the same moulding operation. Solar cells 6 and a liquid crystal display 5 are provided. <IMAGE>
Description
ELLCTR:)!#1C CALCULATOR
This invention relates to an electronic calculator, more particularly to an electronic calculator incorporating a magnifying glass.
According to the present invention there is provided an electronic calculator having a generally planar front surface and including a lens portion to act as a magnifying glass, the lens portion extending out of the generally planar front surface of the calculator.
Although it is envisaged that the lens portion constituting the magnifying glass can be inserted as a separate element into an aperture in the electronic calculator of the present invention, it is preferred that the lens portion constituting the magnifying glass be an integral part of the body of the calculator. Preferably, the body of the calculator is moulded from a transparent plastics material, in which case the magnifying lens portion can be formed in the body in the same moulding operation.
Preferably, the electronic calculator is provided with a generally planar back surface and the focal length of the magnifying lens is such that when the calculator is placed directly onto an object, a magnified image of the object can be seen through the magnifying lens.
In a preferred embodiment an electronic calculator according to the present invention is provided with a transparent plastics body in which there is incorporated a magnifying glass, a printed circuit board and a micro-processor being incorporated into a separate sheet affixed to a front surface of the calculator body, and being arranged to be solar-powered.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of an electronic calculator according to the present invention; and
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic cross-section of the electronic calculator of Figure 1, along the line A-A.
Referring to the drawings, an electronic calculator (1) includes a solid, transparent plastics body (2).
A front surface of the body (2) is provided with a shallow generally rectangular recess (3), in which recess (3) is received a laminar sheet (4) incorporating conventional electronic calculator elements.
Specifically, the laminar sheet (4) includes liquid crystal display (5), solar cells (6) and pressure sensitive key pads (7).
As may be seen from Figure 2, the transparent plastics body (2) of the electronic calculator (1) incorporates a magnifying lens (8), the convex front surface of which lens (8) extends out of the generally planar front surface of the electronic calculator (1). As has been indicated diagrammatically in Figure 2 the lens (8) is capable of magnifying an object located directly adjacent the back surface of the electronic calculator (1).
It will be appreciated that the electronic calculator of the present invention may be modified without departing from the spirit or scope of the present invention. The present invention includes within its scope all changes and modifications which would be apparent to one skilled in the art. Thus, for example, it will be clear that instead of employing a convex magnifying lens as shown in the drawings, the electronic calculator of the present invention could be provided with a Fresnel lens in an upper surface thereof.
Claims (7)
1. An electronic calculator having a generally planar front surface and including a lens portion to act as a magnifying glass, the lens portion extending out of the generally planar front surface of the calculator.
2. An electronic calculator according to claim 1, wherein the lens portion constituting the magnifying glass is inserted as a separate element into an aperature in the electronic calculator.
3. An electronic calculator according to Claim 1, wherein the lens portion constituting the magnifying glass is an integral part of a body of the calculator.
4. An electronic calculator according to claim 3, wherein the body of the calculator is moulded from a transparent plastics material, and the magnifying lens portion is formed in the body in the same moulding operation.
5. An electronic calculator according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the lens portion is in the form of a convex lens.
6. An electronic calculator according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the electronic calculator is provided with a generally planar back surface and the focal length of the magnifying lens is such that when the calculator is placed directly onto an object, a magnified image of the object can be seen through the magnifying lens.
7. An electronic calculator, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
7. An electronic calculator according to any one of the preceding claims, which is provided with a transparent plastics body in which there is incorporated a magnifying glass, a printed circuit board and a micro-processor being incorporated into a separate sheet affixed to a front surface of the calculator body, and being arranged to be solar-powered.
8. An electronic calculator, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
9. The features hereinbefore described, or their equivalents, in any novel selection.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1. An electronic calculator having a generally planar front surface and including a convex lens portion to act as a magnifying glass, the lens portion extending out of the generally planar front surface of the calculator, and the arrangement being such that the lens will produce a magnified image of an object located behind the calculator.
5. An electronic calculator according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the electronic calculator is provided with a generally planar back surface and the focal length of the magnifying lens is such that when the calculator is placed directly onto an object, a magnified image of the object can be seen through the magnifying lens.
