Description

LB140889 - 1 PROTECTIVE SHEATH FOR RUCKSACKS The invention relates to a
protective sheath for rucksacks, consisting of a sack-like container with at least one closeable container opening, for receiving a rucksack with backstraps consisting of shoulder and/or hip straps, in which the container opening can be closed by suitable traction means and the protective sheath has at least one further closeable opening, through which the rucksack straps can be passed.
Rucksacks serve more and more for short or longdistance travellers to accommodate travelling utensils. When long distances have to be covered with private or public transport means, the closure flaps, straps, buckles, etc., are very inconvenient, because they form a bulky piece of luggage, which very easily hooks up with other luggage. It can easily be damaged during loading or unloading and often requires additional transport types. In order to avoid this, the entire rucksack is placed in a protective transport sheath having a smooth surface, which can be closed and can be transported as an easily handled smooth piece of luggage.
A protective sheath is disclosed in DE-GM 84 05 396, whereby film and photographic equipment can be protected bi %.0 2221 81' 1 LB140889 from rain. Although such waterproof protective sheaths form a smooth, easy to handle surface, they leave free an opening for the carrier straps. If a sack covered in this manner is not to be carried, the carrier means are inconvenient and bulky.
An object of the present invention is to provide a protective transport sheath of the type mentioned at outset, by means of which the carrier straps can be covered if need be.
This is achieved in that at least one shoulder strap opening is provided which can be closed by means of a closure flap attached to one side. By this means, a protective transport sheath is created, in which the backstraps needed for carrying can be drawn through suitable openings. If the backstraps are not needed, then these openings can be closed by simple means. A transport sheath of this kind when closed on all sides has a smooth surface, facilitating its manipulation. If required, the carrier straps can be brought into use easily and with the aid of simple means.
One example of a rucksack sheath in accordance with the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and will be described in more detail in the following. In the drawing:
LB140889 Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the exemplary waterproof protective transport sheath; and Figure 2 is a partial side elevation illustrating the same sheath with rucksack in place and backstraps drawn through the strap openings.
The waterproof protective transport sheath 10 illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 serves as a container for accommodating a rucksack 11 which has shoulder straps 12 and hip straps 13. In use as illustrated in Figure 1, the waterproof protective transport sheath 10 is pulled over the rucksack 11 by way of an opening 28 in its lower side 16 in such a manner, that its rear portion 14 comes to overlie the region of the carrier straps 12 and 13. The protective sheath is made in a single piece and has a closed upper side 15.
The opening 28 is provided with closure means.17, which essentially consists of a throughgoing cord 18 which can be twisted and pulled tight and can be held fast in position by means of a cord clamp 19.
In the rear portion 14 of the protective sheath 10 in the zone of the shoulder strap base 31 associated with the accommodated rucksack 11, a shoulder strap opening 20 is provided for the shoulder straps 12. In the illustrated embodiment, the shoulder strap opening 20 is 1 LB140889 substantially square and can be closed by means of a f lap 24 which is attached along a transversely extending join 27. The edges 22 of the shoulder strap opening 20 are provided with barbed fastener strips 23 (Regd. Trademark VELCRO) which can be brought into operative connection with corresponding barbed fastener strips 30 of the closure flap 24.
In the vicinity of the strap roots 32 of the hip straps 13 of the accommodated rucksack 11 the sheath 10 has lateral hip strap openings 21 arranged in pairs, through which the hip straps 13 can be drawn out of the protective transport sheath 10. The hip strap openings 21 are provided with overlapping edges 26 which, when the hip straps 13 are packed in, are self-closing. in a modified embodiment the overlaps 26 can be provided with barbed fastening (VELCRO) strips 30, so that they remain closed even if very roughly handled.
In another embodiment a throughgoing opening may be provided for the shoulder straps 12 and the hip straps 13, which, by means of diagrammatically illustrated overlapping edges 29 can be closed safely with or without a barbed fastener (VELCRO) strip 30.
The protective sheath 10 is made of waterproof material and can remain on the rucksack 11 while n LB140889 carried, as shown in Figure 2, to serve as protection against rain. The closure flap 24, when open, can be either pushed inwards, or rolled up or made fast with the a-id of retaining means in the form of small strips 25.
