Description
A Method, Device and an Adhesive strip for
Joining Sheets of Computer Paper.
The present invention relates to a method, a device and an adhesive strip for joining sheets of computer paper.
It is common for sheets of computer paper to be fed in batches into a computer where the "run" uses only part of a batch of, for example, 500 sheets. The remaining sheets then either have to be thrown away or can be joined manually with adhesive tape. If the sheets are joined manually the computer often jams as a result of an untidy join - a smooth join is therefore necessary to avoid such a drawback.
Naturally, there is a demand for a means of joining the remains of batches together smoothly to avoid undue waste and to provide a more economical use of computer paper.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a device for locating computer sheets to enable the bottom of one sheet to be joined to the top of another sheet comprising a body having first and second rows of projections shaped to receive the holes running along the sides of the computer sheets wherein the distance between the first and second rows of projections can be adjusted to allow various widths of computer sheet to joined.
The present invention further provides an adhesive strip for joining the bottom of one computer sheet to the top of another sheet having holes running along its sides corresponding to those in the computer sheets to be joined, the strip having an adhesive surface covered by a protective backing.
The present invention further provides a method of joining the bottom of one computer sheet to the top of another computer sheet comprising the steps of adjusting a device comprising a body with first and second rows of projections shaped to receive the holes running along the sides of the computer sheets so that the distance between the first and second rows of projections corresponds to the distance between the holes running along the sides of the computer sheets to be joined, placing an adhesive strip, which has holes running along the sides corresponding those in the computer sheets to be-joined, on the device with its adhesive surface facing away from the device, locating the bottom of a first computer sheet partially over the adhesive strip and placing the top of a second computer sheet adjacent to the bottom of the first computer sheet to cover the remaining adhesive surface.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described in detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1- is a perspective view of a device for locating computer sheets according to the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device in Fig. 1, set in an alternative position.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the device in Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is an end view of the device in Fig. 2,
Fig. 5 is a view from below the device in Fig. 2,
Fig. 6 shows an adhesive strip according to the present invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device for locating computer sheets. The arrow shows the direction in which computer sheets would be fed onto the device.
The device comprises a body 1 having first and second rows of projections 2 and 3 shaped to receive the holes running along the sides of computer sheets. The device is adjustable in that the distance between the first and second rows of projections 2 and 3 can be varied to allow different widths of computer sheets to be located on the device. In the device shown in Figure 1 the body 1 has a channel 4 within which a plate 5 can slide. The plate 5 carries the first row of projections 2. The plate 5 can be locked into the required position for a given width of computer sheet by means of a screw 6 which screws into a corresponding threaded bore in the plate 5. The screw 6- slides in a groove 7 in the channel 4 when the plate 5 is adjusted.
The head of the screw 6 has a diameter greater than the width of the groove to enable the head of the screw to overlap the groove sides on the lower face of the body 1 and thus hold the plate 5 in position when tightened.
In Figure 1 the device is shown with the plate 5 in an intermediate position on the body 1.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device in Figure 1 with the plate 5 in a different position. The dashed lines to either side of the drawing depict the location of the plate when set with the rows of projections 2 and 3 at their maximum and minimum distances apart.
Figure 3 is a side view of the device in Figure 2. In this Figure one can see the feet 8 on which the device stands to raise the body 1 sufficiently so that the screw 6 does not contact the surface upon which the device is placed. This embodiment of the present invention has a washer placed between the screw 6 and body 1 to facilitate tightening of the screw 6.
Figures 4 and 5 are an end view and a view from below respectively of the device shown in Figure 2.
Although7 the drawings depict a device- provided with two projections on the plate 5 with two projections on the body 1, one located on each side of the channel 4, it is possible to vary the numbers depending on requirements.
Figure 6 shows an adhesive strip 9 for joining the bottom of one computer sheet to the top of another.
The adhesive strip 9 has a protective backing 10 which when removed reveals an adhesive surface 11. The adhesive strip depicted in Figure 6 is made for use with the device shown in Figures 1-5 and accordingly is provided with four holes along each side which can be slipped over the projections 2 and 3 on the device.
In order to -join two computer sheets together the device should first be adjusted so that the first and second rows of projections 2 and 3 are spaced such that the distance between the rows corresponds to that between the holes running along the sides of the computer sheets to be joined. The plate 5 should then be secured in position by means of the screw 6. An adhesive strip 9, having the same width as the computer sheets to be joined, with its protective backing 10 removed should then be placed on the device with its adhesive surface 11 facing away from the device. The projections 2 should pass through the middle two holes on one side of the strip and the projections 3 should pass through the first and fourth holes on the other side of the strip. The bottom of the first computer sheet to be joined should then be placed carefully over the adhesive strip 9 covering half of the adhesive surface 11 so that it passes over one projection 2 and one projection 3. The top of the second computer sheet to be- joined with the first computer sheet should then be placed carefully over the remaining half of the adhesive surface 11 and remaining projections 2 and 3.
It is important that the computer sheets are pressed smoothly onto the adhesive surface 11 to avoid creases which might jam the computer into which the joined sheets are fed.
The adhesive strips 9 can be made in various widths to correspond with each of the widths of computer sheet to be joined.
