Abstract

The invention provides a telephone lock 10 for preventing the plug of a telephone from being inserted into a corresponding link jack unit, comprising a locking means 11 including a shank member 13 of a suitable length and size to be accommodated in the socket of the line jack unit in substitution for the telephone plug proper. The shank member 13 has a movable locking member 15 located at the free end thereof and is arranged to be in use moved by the locking means 11 to engage a part of the line jack unit socket 17 to prevent removal of the telephone lock from the line jack unit. The lock 10 may include a housing 20 that covers the socket 17 and jack unit 20. <IMAGE>

Description

TELEPHONE LOCK The present invention relates to a telephone lock, and in particular a lock which prevents the plug of a telephone from being inserted into a line jack unit.
It is now common for telephones to have a cable which terminates in a plug, this plug being inserted into a socket in a line jack unit which is normally fixed to a wall or other structure in a room. The line jack unit is a conventional apparatus which includes a socket into which the telephone plug is inserted to connect the telephone to a telephone line.
An object of the present invention is to provide a telephone lock which prevents the plug of a telephone from being inserted from into a corresponding line jack unit.
According to the invention there is provided a telephone lock for preventing the plug of a telephone from being inserted into a corresponding line jack unit, comprising a locking means including a shank member of a suitable length and size to be accommodated in the socket of the line jack unit in substitution for the telephone plug proper, the shank member having a movable locking member located at the free end thereof and arranged to be in use moved by the locking means to engage a part of the line jack unit socket to prevent removal of the telephone lock from the line jack unit.
Preferably, the locking member is rotatably mounted on the free end of the shank member, and operable by means of the barrel lock. The locking member is preferably rotatable from a position in line with the shank member corresponding to an unlocked position, to a position at right angles to the shank member corresponding to a locked position.
The locking member is preferably connected to the locking means by a pin passing through the shank member.
In a preferred form of the invention the locking means comprises a key operated barrel lock.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a telephone lock according to the invention; Figure 2 is a front view of a line jack unit which is normally fixed to a wall and which receives the plug of a telephone; and Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of the telephone lock of Figure 1 in use in the line jack unit of Figure 2.
Referring now to ths drawings wherein similar numerals have been used to indicate like parts, there is shown therein a telephone lock generally indicated at 10 according to the invention. The telephone lock 10 comprises a barrel lock 11 operated in conventional manner by means of a key 12. Further, the telephone lock 10 includes a shank member 13 integrally formed with the housing 14 of the barrel lock 11. A locking member 15 is mounted adjacent the free end 16 of the shank member 13, by means of a pin (not shown) which passes through the shank member 13. The pin which passes through the shank member 13, is also connected to the operating mechanism of the barrel lock 11 so that the locking member 15 is rotatable from a position as shown in line with the shank member 13, to a position shown in dotted outline at 15' at right angles to the shank member 13.
In use, the shank member 13 is inserted into the socket 17 of the line jack unit 18 as shown in Figure 3.
The shank member 13 may have suitable grooves 19 to enable it to be suitably accommodated in the socket 17, in substitution for a telephone plug proper. It will be noted that the socket 17 extends rearwardly in the line jack unit 18 and the shank member 13 is slightly longer than the socket 17 so that when in use the locking member 15 is located behind the socket 17.
The locking member 15 is then rotated to a position at right angles to the shank member 13 by operating the barrel lock 11 so that the locking member 15 engages behind the socket 17 as shown. To remove the lock 10 from the line jack unit 18 the barrel lock is simply operated again to rotate the locking member 15 to the position in line with the shank member 13 and the lock 10 is then removed from the socket 17 of the line jack unit 18.
In another embodiment of the invention the lock 10 may be integrally formed in a housing indicated in dotted outline at 20, which fits over the line jack unit 18 to provide a more aesthetic appearance.
The main advantage of the invention is that it is simple to operate requiring only the removal of the conventional telephone plug. The invention is also inexpensive to manufacture.
