Abstract
A carton which is triangular in transverse cross-section comprises three side wall panels (2, 3, 4) each of which has hingedly connected at the base thereof a respective base portion (5, 6, 7). In the set up carton the base portions form a concave base with an open central region which forms a seat (9) for the contents. Adjacent lateral edges of two base portions (5 and 6) are permanently interconnected and the lateral edges of the base portion (7) are formed with tongues (21) which automatically interlock with respective apertures (17) when the carton is set up from a flat configuration. In order to supply the carton in a flat configuration two side walls (2, 3) lie flat one atop the other and the third side wall (4) is folded centrally. <IMAGE>
Description
CARTON
This invention relates to a carton, and more particularly to a carton of the type which is pre-formed and transported in a flat configuration to the user where the carton is set up prior to filling.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a carton which can be transported in a flat configuration and can be set up from the flat configuration by moving the side walls of the carton to a triangular cylindrical configuration, the carton comprising: first, second and third side wall portions permanently interconnected such that, in the set up carton, the side wall portions together form a continuous side wall; and first, second and third base portions which, in the set up carton form a concave base with an open central region which forms a seat for a convex object disposed in the carton, wherein each base portion has a first edge region hingedly connected to a respective one of the side wall portions, a second edge region, opposite the first edge region, which forms part of the seat of the set up carton, and lateral edge regions which, in the set up carton, are connected to the lateral edge regions of the adjacent base portions, one lateral edge region of the first base portion being permanently connected to one lateral edge region of the second base portion, and the other lateral edge regions of the first and second base portions and the lateral edge regions of the third base portion being formed with automatically interlocking means whereby the carton may be set up by moving the side wall portions to the desired triangular cylindrical configuration, and hinging the third base portion relative to its associated side wall portion until the automatically interlocking means interlock to fix the third base portion to the first and second base portions.
In order to allow the carton to be supplied in a flat configuration the third side wall portion is preferably folded. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the cross-section of the set up carton is an equilateral triangle, and with this arrangement the third side-wall portion is centrally folded whereby when the carton is supplied in its flat configuration the first side wall portion overlies the second side wall portion and is coincident therewith, and the third side wall portion is located to one side of the overlying first and second side wall portions.
The automatically interlocking means preferably comprises a locking tongue formed on each lateral edge region of the third base portion, and a cooperating interlocking aperture formed in the corresponding lateral edge regions qf the first and second base portions.
The invention will be better understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, given by way of example only, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 shows the blank of a preferred carton according to the present invention;
Figure 2 shows the blank of figure 1 pre-formed into a carton transportable in a flat configuration; and
Figure 3 illustrates the base of the carton formed from the blank of figure 1 as the carton is being set up.
Referring to the drawings, the blank 1 comprises a first side wall portion 2, a second side wall portion 3, and a third side wall portion 4. First, second and third base portions 5,6,7 are connected respectively to the side wall portions 2,3,4 along one edge region of each base portion. A second edge region 8 of each base portion is located opposite the edge region connected to the associated side wall portion, the edge regions 8 together forming a seat 9 for a convex object located within the set up carton. The edges of the side wall portions 2-4 opposite the base portions 5-7 are provided with'flaps 1012 for closing the carton.
One lateral edge region 13 of the first base portion 5 is provided with a flap 14 which, during manufacture of the carton, is adhesively secured to the edge region 15 of the base portion 6. The other lateral edge region 16 of the base portion 5 is provided with an aperture 17, as is the other lateral edge region 18 of the base portion 6. The lateral edge regions 19,20 of the base portion 7 are provided with locking tongues 21 for interlocking with the apertures 17, as described hereinafter.
The blank 1 is'pre-formed to a carton by hinging the base portion 5 about its connection with the side wall portion 2 to underlie the side wall portion 2 as viewed in figure 1. The flap 14 is then bent to lie against the remainder of the base portion 5. The base portion 6 is then folded to lie beneath the side wall portion 3 as viewed in figure 1, and the blank is folded about the connection 22 between the side wall portions 2 and 3 to bring the side wall portion 3 beneath and coincident with the side wall portion 2. The side wall portion 4 is then folded longitudinally about a crease line 23 to bring the free edge 24 of the side wall portion 4 over a flap 25 provided on the edge of the side wall portion 2. The flap 14 is adhesively secured to the base portion 6 and the flap 25 is adhesively secured to the side wall portion 4. This produces the pre-formed carton illustrated in figure 2.
The carton may readily be set up without use of machinery by moving the side wall portions 2-4 into a triangular cylindrical configuration. This will automatically cause the first and second base portions 5,6 to move to a configuration in which they extend at an acute angle relative to their associated side wall portions. The base portion 7 is then hinged inwardly of the base until the locking tongues 21 engage in the apertures 17. Because of the inherent resilience of the material from which the carton is made, once the locking tabs 21 enter-the apertures 17 they will spring into interlocking engagement with the apertures and the base portions will all be locked in position. The carton may then be stood on its base, filled and closed in conventional manner.
Claims (5)
1. A carton which can be transported in a flat configuration can be set up from the flat configuration by moving the side walls of the carton to a triangular cylindrical configuration, the carton comprising: first, second and third side wall portions permanently interconnected such that, in the set up carton, the side wall portions together form a continuous side wall; and first, second and third base portions which, in the set up carton form a concave base with an open central region which forms a seat for a convex object disposed in the carton, wherein each base portion has a first edge region hingedly connected to a respective one of the side wall portions, a second edge region, opposite the first edge region, which forms part of the seat of the set up carton, and lateral edge regions which, in the set up carton, are connected to the lateral edge regions of the adjacent base portions, one lateral edge region of the first base portion being permanently connected to one lateral edge region of the second base portion, and the other lateral edge regions of the first and second base portions and the lateral edge regions of the third base portion being formed with automatically interlocking means whereby the carton may be set up by moving the side wall portions to the desired triangular cylindrical configuration, and hinging the third base portion relative to its associated side wall portion until the automatically interlocking means interlock to fix the third base portion to the first and second base portions.
2. A carton according to claim 1 wherein the third side portion is folded to allow the carton to be supplied in a flat configuration.
3. A carton according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the cross-section of the set up carton is an equilateral triangle and the third side wall portion is centrally folded whereby when the carton is supplied in its flat configuration the first side wall portion overlies the second side wall portion and is coincident therewith and the third side wall portion is located to one side of the overlying first and second side wall portions.
