Abstract

A tamper-detecting device for a gas meter incorporating an inlet-let conduit connected to the gas meter by a union having a diameter greater than the diameter of the conduit the device comprising a housing (1) for the union and provided with a pair of opposed walls (8), (9) each having an aperture (A) large enough to permit passage of the conduit but not of the union the device incorporating a locking means (10) for securing the union within the housing. <IMAGE>

Description

Tamperproof Device This invention relates to a tamperproof device for attachment to a gas meter to prevent unauthorised use of gas.
Gas from a mains supply enters a premises of a consumer from a gas mains by an inlet pipe which is connected to a gas meter. An outlet pipe from the meter is in turn connected to various gas consuming appliances such ao a fire or a central heating boiler. Whenever an appliance is used, gas passes through the meter and the volume which has been used is recorded.
A problem which confronts suppliers of gas stems from the fact that on occasion some consumers disconnect the meter which they then reconnect back to front. As a result the meter does not measure correctly the amount of gas whch has been used by the appliance. The present invention is directed to a tamperproof device which ensures that if the inlet pipe is at any time temporarily disconnected the fact that this action has been taken will be readily detectable.
Accordingly this invention provides a tamperproof device for a gas meter incorporating an inlet conduit connected to the meter by a union having a diameter greater than the diameter of the conduit the device comprising a housing for the union, an aperture large enough to permit entry of the conduit but insufficiently large to permit passage of the union the device incorporating tamperproof locking means for retaining the union within the device.
Ihis invention is illustrated but not restricted by the following drawings in which;- Figure I is a view taken in perspective view of one preferred form of device according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view taken in vertical section showing the device illustrated in Fig.l attached to a gas meter. In these figures the device consists of an approximately U shaped member shown generally as numeral 1 which conveniently can be made of sheet metal. Other constructional materials can be used provided that if they are subjected to distorting forces, they either break or otherwise display signs of having being distorted. Those member comprises a base or end portion (2) and arms (3 & ) which form what is in effect a container for accommodating a union (5) connecting inlet pipe (6) with a gas meter (7). Members (3 & ) are each provided with shoulders (8 & ) which are spaced apart by distance A which is just sufficient to accommodate inlet (6) but is less than the diameter of union (5). The latter is contained withn the body of the device.A locking pin (10) provided at one end with a pin head (11) and at the other end with an aperture (12) is located slidably in opposing holes in arms (3 & ).
In use, pin (10) is removed and the device is slid onto the union until the latter is located between the pairs of shoulders (8 & ). Since the distance A between the shoulders is just slightly greater than the diameter cfinlet pipe (6) the device can rotate freely around the pipe. However it is unable to slide along the pipe and to expose the union because the latter having a diameter greater than the the distance of separation (A) of the shoulders cannot move past them. When the union has been positioned correctly pin (10) is replaced and a seal (13) is applied. It will be appreciated that if pipe (6) is to be disconnected either the seal (13) has to be removed or the body of the device has to be cut away or sufficently distorted to permit access to the union. In any of these cases if such actions were carried out they would be readily detectable.

Claims
1. A tamper-detecting device for a gas meter incorporating an inlet conduit connected to the gas meter by a union having a diameter greater than the diameter of the conduit the device comprising a housing for the union and provided with a pair of opposed walls each having an aperture large enough to permit passage of the conduit but not of the union the device incorporating locking means for securing the union within the housing.
2. A device according to Claim 1 wherein the housing is a hollow U shaped body and the arms of the housing are spaced apart sufficiently to permit passage of the conduit but not of the union.
3. A device according to Claim 2 wherein the U shaped body comprises two arms each provided with a pair of inwardly directed shoulder portions which are spaced apart sufficiently tp permit passage of the conduit but not the union
4. A device according to either of claims 2 & the locking means comprises a pin passing through opposing holes in the arms of the U shaped housing and the pin is provided with tamper detecting means.
5. A device according to Claim 3 wherein the tamper detecting means comprises a seal secured to the end of the pin
6. Tamper detecting devices as hereinbefore described with particular reference to the drawings.
