Description

Auxiliary Seats This invention relates to auxiliary seats for use by children in motor cars or the like.

The invention provides an auxiliary seat which in its erected condition provides a seat squab, back rest and head rest, but which can be folded down for storage and portability and may also be used as a booster seat in its folded condition.

In the embodiment described below, an auxiliary seat comprises-three sections, hingedly connected together, namely a seat squab, a back rest and a head rest, the head rest preferably having side wings providing for lateral restraint, the arrangement being such that in the folded position, the back rest and the head rest are disposed under the seat squab, with the wings extending upwardly to project partially above the upper surface of the seat squab.

With this arrangement, the folded seat can be used as a booster seat, which can be placed on a car seat to allow the user to sit at a higher level.

This embodiment will now be described in detail, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows the seat in its erected condition; Fig. 2 shows it partially folded; Fig. 3 shows it fully folded; and Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate use of the seat in its erected and folded conditions.

The auxiliary seat comprises a seat squab 1 having apertures 2 at each side through its complete thickness, a back rest 3 hinged to the seat squab and a head rest 4 hinged to the back rest.

The head rest has lateral restraints formed by side wings 6.

In its erected condition the seat is used in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4.

To fold the seat down, the head rest 4 is folded down behind the back rest 3 to the position shown in Fig. 2, and then the back rest 3 is folded back underneath the seat squab 1, the wings 6 entering and extending through the apertures 2.

The folded condition is illustrated in Fig.

3, which is a view from the rear of the seat squab 1 and also shows an integral carrying handle 7 formed in the seat squab.

In its folded condition, the seat may be used as a "booster" seat, whose use is illustrated in Fig.

5, the projecting ends of the wings 6 providing lateral restraint. Alternatively, the wings could extend upwardly along the sides of the seat squab, rather than through apertures 2.

The auxiliary seat is conveniently formed as an integral moulding in a rigid or semi-rigid foamed plastics material.

Claims (5)

CLAIMS:

1. An auxiliary seat comprising three sections, hingedly connected together, namely a seat squab, a back rest and a head rest, the arrangement being such that head rest can be folded rearwardly to lie behind the back rest, and the back rest can be folded rearwardly to underlie the seat squab, with the head rest sandwiched between the other two sections.

2. An auxiliary seat according to claim 1, wherein the head rest has side wings providing for lateral head restraint and wherein the forward margins of the said wings project upwardly above the upper surface of the seat squab when the seat is folded up.

3. An auxiliary seat according to claim 2 wherein the seatsquab is formed with apertures through which the wings project in the folded-up position of the seat.

4. An auxiliary seat according to claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the seat squab is formed at its rear edge with a carrying handle which is accessible in the folded-up position of the seat.
