Description
A HOLDER FOR A COMPACT DISC
This invention relates to a holder for a compact disc.
Compact discs are recently increasing in popularity and they need to be retained in a holder. One known holder for a compact disc comprises a base, locating means which is provided as part of the base and a cover which folds over the base to cover the compact disc. This known holder is relatively expensive to produce since the base is to be produced as a moulded item from a plastics material.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a holder for a compact disc, which holder is both simple and inexpensive to produce.
Accordingly, this invention provides a holder for a compact disc, which holder comprises a base, locating means which is provided on the base and which is for locating the compact disc in position on the base, and a cover which folds over the base to cover the compact disc, the base comprising a first portion which is folded on top of a second portion, the locating means comprising an upstanding portion which projects through an aperture in the first portion of the base and which is for projecting through a central aperture in the compact disc, and the base and the cover being such that they are formed by folding a single sheet of card material.
Because the base and the cover are formed from a single sheet of card material, the card holder can be produced simply and cheaply. The card material can be of any suitable and appropriate thickness.
Preferably, the first and the second portions of the base are stuck to each other to trap the locating means in position. If the first and the second portions of the base are stuck together with spaced apart lines of adhesive, the first and the second portions of the base can be stuck together and then the locating means can be inserted between the first and the second portions of the base until the upstanding portion of the locating means projects through the aperture in the first portion of the base. If desired, other means of positioning the locating means in the base may be employed so that, for example, the locating means may be stuck to the first or the second portions of the base.
Preferably, the holder is one in which the cover has a first portion which is folded on top of a second portion whereby one side only of the single sheet of card material can be printed to enable the holder to have the printing on both sides when the first portion of ~ the cover is folded on top of the second portion of the base, and when the first portion of the cover is folded on top of the second portion of the cover.
In a preferred construction, the holder is one in which the first portion of the base is joined to and folds about a top edge of the second portion of the base, in which the second portion of the cover is joined to and folds about a side edge of the second portion of the base, and in which the first portion of the cover folds about a top edge of the second portion of the cover.
The upstanding portion of the locating means may comprise a plurality of fingers which are able to flex and so grip the compact disc.
The locating means may comprise a flange which surrounds the upstanding portion.
The locating means may include an elongate member for inserting the locating means into its position on the base, the elongate member being frangibly connected to the flange so that the elongate member can be broken away from the flange and removed when the upstanding portion is projecting through the aperture in the first portion of the base.
Usually, the locating means will be made of a plastics material. Any desired and suitable type of plastics material may be employed.
One side of the single sheet of card material may be provided with a coating for accepting printing.
The coating is preferably a china clay coating.
When the holder is printed, the printing may be protected by a protective coating. The protective coating prevents, for example, finger marks as the holder is handled. Preferably the protective coating is a varnish coating.
The printing may be any desired type of printing and it is preferably four colour printing.
The sheet of card material will usually be die cut to shape and creased all in one operation. The die may be a steel die having appropriate cutting edges and crease rules.
The present invention also extends to the holder when provided with the compact disc.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a holder for a compact disc;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the holder as shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of a single sheet of card material used for forming the holder; and
Figure 4 is a top plan view of locating means forming part of the holder.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a holder 2 for a compact disc 4. The compact disc 4 is only shown in Figure 1 for ease of understanding and illustration.
The holder 2 canprises a base 6 and locating means 8. The locating means 8 is provided on the base 6 and it is for locating the compact disc 4 in position on the base 6.
The holder 2 also comprises a cover 10 which folds over the base 6 to cover the compact disc 4.
The base 6 comprises a first portion 12 which is folded on top of a second portion 14. The locating means 8 comprises an upstanding portion 16 which projects through an aperture 18 in the first portion 12 of the base 6. The upstanding portion 16 is also for projecting through a central aperture 20 in the compact disc 4.
As can be seen most clearly from Figure 3 and as will be described in more detail hereinbelow, the base 6 and the cover 10 are formed by folding a single sheet 22 of card material.
The first and the second portions 12,14 of the base 6 are stuck to each other to trap the locating means 8 in position. More specifically, the first portion 12 is provided with four spaced apart strips 24 of adhesive.
These strips 24 of adhesive enable the first and the second portions 12,14 of the base 6 to be stuck to each other, whilst leaving sufficient space adjacent the aperture 18 for the locating means 8 to be inserted in the direction of the arrow 26 until the upstanding portion 16 is located in the aperture 18.
As can be seen from Figure 4, the locating means 8 comprises a flange 28 which surrounds the upstanding portion 16. The locating means also includes an elongate member 30 for inserting the locating means into its position on the base 6. By comparing Figures 3 and 4, it will be apparent that the elongate member 30 can be used to push the flange 28 and the upstanding portion 16 between the first and the second portions 12,14 of the base 6 until the upstanding portion 16 projects through the aperture 18. The elongate member 30 is frangibly connected to the flange 28 by thin connecting portions 32.
Once the upstanding portion 16 is located in the aperture 18, the elongate member 30 can be twisted to break the connecting portions=52,whereupon the elongate member 30 can be removed and thrown away. The elongate member 30 is provided with an upturned end 34 to provide a grip for helping to move the elongate member 30 to break the connecting portions 32 and then remove the elongate member 30 from between the first and the second portions 12,14 of the base 6.
The cover 10 has a first portion 36 which is folded and stuck by adhesive strips 37 on top of a second portion 38* Thus one side only of the single sheet 22 of card material can be printed to enable the holder to have the printing on both sides when the first portion 12 of the base 6 is folded on top of the second portion 14 of the base 6, and when the first portion 36 of the cover 10 is folded on top of the second portion 38 of the cover 10. The side of the sheet 22 of card material that is provided with the printing is the side underneath the side illustrated in Figure 3.
As can be seen from Figure 3, the first portion 12 of the base 6 is joined to and folds about a top edge 40 of the second portion 14 of the base 6. The second portion 38 of the cover 10 is joined to and folds about a side edge 42 of the second portion 14 of the base 6.
This side edge 42 forms part of a spine 44 of the holder 2.
The first portion 36 of the cover 10 folds about a top edge 46 of the second portion 38 of the cover 10.
As shown in Figures 2 and 4, the upstanding portion 16 of the locating means 8 comprises a plurality of fingers 48 which are able to flex and so grip the compact disc 4. The fingers 48 are able to flex easily since the locating means 8 is made of an appropriate plastics material.
The side of the sheet 22 card material that is to be printed is provided with a coating for accepting the printing. The coating is a china clay coating. BEen the printing has been effected, it may be protected by a protective coating, for example to stop finger marking during handling of the holder 2.The protective coating is preferably a varnish coating. The printing can be in as many colours as may be desired and it is preferably four colour printing.
Figure 4 shows how the sheet 22 of card material can be die cut to shape and creased all in one operation. This can be effected by a steel die (not shown) which is provided with appropriate cutters for cutting out the overall shape of the sheet 22 of card material and also for cutting out a channel portion 50 and the aperture 18. Creases are provided along the top edges 40 and 46 and along either side of the spine 44 as shown.
A preferred method of making the holder 2 is first to print card material and then to varnish the card material. The card material is then die cut and creased to the shape shown in Figure 3, whereafter the adhesive strips 24 are provided. Then the first and the second portions 12,14 of the cover 10 are folded together and stuck to each other. The locating means 8 is then inserted. A final folding stage is then effected to fold the first and the second portions 36,38 of the cover 10 over each other, and also to fold the cover 10 over the base 6 by folding about the spine 44. Thus, in the completed form of the holder, it is substantially one quarter of the size of the sheet 22 of card material.
The compact disc 4 can then be inserted and the holder 2 with the compact disc 4 can then be stored in a display box.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the card material can be provided with a coating for accepting printing which is other than the above mentioned china clay coating. Similarly, the card material can be provided with a protective coating other than the above mentioned varnish coating. The holder of the invention can be produced in any desired shape so that it may be square or rectangular. The holder can also be produced in any desired sizes. Thus the holder may be produced in a 3 inch (7.5mm) or a 5 inch (12.8mm) version, The holder may also be produced in multi-disc versions, for example to accept compact discs of different sizes. In order to enable the holder easily to be removed from a display box, it is preferred that the holder is square or rectangular. In one example of a holder, the distance from the spine 44 to the opening edge 52 of the holder 2 may be 142mm. The holder of the invention may have an extra flap, for example like the cover 10, if desired. Also, the aperture 18 in the first portion 12 of the base 6 may be larger to show more of the locating means 8. Further, the aperture 18 need not be circular and it can be of other shapes, for example square or rectangular. The aperture 18 can also be smaller to show less of the locating means 8. The extra flap may fold over the first portion 36 from any desired and appropriate edge of the first portion 36, or it may fold over the base 6.
