Abstract
Adhesive packaging tape has adhesive 12 on one side of a web 10 of carrier material, and a hidden verification feature 16 on the other side. The verification feature is printed onto the web, is invisible under ambient conditions but can be revealed under non standard conditions such as ultra violet light.
Description
TITLE: Adhesive Packaging Tape
This invention relates to adhesive, preferably self adhesive, packaging tape.
According to the invention there is provided adhesive packaging tape comprising a web of carrier material with an adhesive on one side of the web and a hidden verification feature on the other side, wherein the hidden verification feature is printed onto the web, is normally invisible, but can be revealed under special conditions.
Packaging tape as set forth above can be used in place of conventional packaging tape to provide a system whereby the recipient of a wrapped package can easily determine whether or not it comes from the correct source or is counterfeit.
The hidden verification feature is preferably a feature which is normally invisible under ambient light conditions but can be revealed by directing, for example, ultra violet light at the tape.
The hidden verification feature can be combined with a conventional, visible printing on the web.
The adhesive is preferably a pressure sensitive adhesive.
The invention also provides a method of packaging wherein a package is sealed with adhesive packaging tape, the tape incorporating a hidden verification feature which can be revealed under certain specified conditions but which is invisible under normal conditions.
Furthermore, the invention also provides a package sealed with packaging tape as set forth above.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a length of packaging tape in accordance with the invention.
The tape is based on a web 10 of carrier material which can be any suitable substrate. The choice of substrate will depend upon the type of goods being packaged and the treatment to which the sealed package will be subjected.
Normally the web will be a polyester or other plastics material with a layer of a pressure sensitive adhesive 12 on the underside. The tape will normally be opaque and will have printed on its top side a conventional visible message 14 such as the word FRAGILE or the company name or logo of the packager and in addition a printed-on hidden verification feature 16 indicated in dotted lines in the drawing. The verification feature 16 will normally be invisible but will be revealed when the tape is placed under certain predetermined lighting conditions, eg ultra violet light.
Counterfeiters may attempt to copy the packages of the genuine source of goods by using tape which is printed in the same way with the same visible markings, but if these counterfeit packages lack the hidden verification feature, they will immediately be revealed as non genuine goods, even before the package is opened.
In addition to its use in preventing the passing off of counterfeit goods, there may be advantages for protection of personnel in that packaging tape in accordance with the invention can be applied to any type of parcel or packet and the packet can be checked before opening to ensure that it comes from the expected, genuine source.
Claims (8)
1. Adhesive packaging tape comprising a web of carrier material with an adhesive'on one side of the web and a hidden verification feature on the other side, wherein the hidden verification feature is printed onto the web, is normally invisible, but can be revealed under special conditions.
2. Packaging tape as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the hidden verification feature is a feature which is invisible under ambient light conditions but can be revealed by directing non-ambient radiation at the tape.
3. Packaging tape as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the radiation is ultra violet radiation.
4. Packaging tape as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the hidden verification feature is combined with a conventional, visible printing on the web.
5. Packaging tape as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the adhesive is a pressure sensitive adhesive.
6. A method of packaging wherein a package is sealed with adhesive packaging tape, the tape incorporating a hidden verification feature which can be revealed under certain specified conditions but which is invisible under ambient conditions.
7. A package sealed with packaging tape as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5.
8. Adhesive packaging tape substantially as herein described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
