Abstract

A floor cleaning machine comprising a housing 10 having a skirt 15 defining an air cushion space 18 and at least one floor cleaning element 12 is provided with a blower for supplying air via pipe 19 to the air cushion space. The blower may be mounted on the handle 11 or on top of or within the housing. A pressure relief valve 20 may be mounted on the housing. In use, the machine may be run without the blower operating for scrubbing or scarifying purposes and with the blower operating for polishing, buffing, or burnishing purposes. <IMAGE>

Description

"FLOOR CLEANING MACHINE" It is known to provide powered floor cleaning machines having one or more rotatable cleaning elements. Such machines are generally of two types, heavier machines for scarifying or scrubbing at relatively lower rotational speeds, and lighter machines for polishing or buffing at higher speeds.
It is an object of the invention to provide a single machine which will perform all of the above operations satisfactorily.
According to the invention there is provided a floor cleaning machine comprising a housing, a floor-cleaning element rotatably mounted in said housing, a motor for rotating said element, said housing including a skirt which surrounds said element to define an air cushion space within the housing, and means for supplying air under pressure to said air cushion space.
A preferred embodiment includes means for regulating the air pressure in said cushion space.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a head of the machine, and Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 in Figure 1.
The cleaning machine head comprises a housing 10 of circular section on which a propelling handle 11 is pivotally mounted. Within the housing 10 is a mains electric motor (not shown) which drives three cleaning discs 12 by way of a gearbox 13. Conveniently each of the discs 12 is interchangeable with other discs for different cleaning operations, as for example scrubbing, polishing and buffing. The housing 10 includes a peripheral resilient bumper 14 and a cylindrical skirt 15 sealingly secured to the bumper 14. The bottom of the skirt 15 has an outward flange 16 to which a rubber cushion element 17 of U-shaped cross-section is secured. The skirt 15 and element 17 combine with the upper part of the housing 10 to define an air cushion space 18 surrounding the discs 12 and gearbox 13.
Air is supplied under pressure to the space 18 through a flexible pipe 19 from a blower (not shown) which is conveniently mounted on the handle 11. Alternatively the blower may be mounted on top of or within the housing 10. Controls for the blower and for the motor which drives the discs 12 are also provided on the handle 11. The housing 10 is provided with an adjustable relief valve, indicated at 20, by means of which the pressure in the space 18 may be regulated.
Additionally or alternatively the aforesaid blower may be controlled to run at a selected one of a plurality of speeds, or a suitable valve arrangment may be incorporated in the blower to provide adjustable pressure regulation.
For scrubbing or scarifying operations the machine may be run without the blower in operation so that the whole weight of the machine is applied through the discs 12 to a floor surface indicated at 21. For polishing the blower may be operated to increase the pressure in space 18 and thereby to reduce the force applied by appropriate discs 12, and for buffing or burnishing the pressure in space 18 may be increased still further so that suitable buffing discs 12 may be run at high speeds to obtain a required level of polish.

CLAIMS:
1. A floor cleaning device comprising a housing, a floor cleaning element rotatably mounted in said housing, a motor for rotating said element, said housing including a skirt which surrounds said element to define an air cushion space within the housing, and means for supplying air under pressure to said air cushion space.
2. A floor cleaning device according to Claim 1 comprising means for regulating the air pressure in said air cushion space.
3. A floor cleaning device according to Claim 1 or 2 wherein the housing is provided with an adjustable relief valve for regulating the air pressure in said air cushion space.
4. A floor cleaning device according to any one preceding claims comprising a blower for supplying air under pressure to said air cushion space.
5. A floor cleaning device according to Claim 4 comprising a control for said blower by means of which the blower speed may be varied for regulating the air pressure in said air cushion space.
6. A floor cleaning device according to Claim 4 or 5 comprising valve means in the blower for regulating the air pressure in said air cushion space.
7. A floor cleaning device according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the floor cleaning element comprises at least one interchangeable floor cleaning disc, mounted for rotation about a substantially vertical axis.
8. A floor cleaning device substantially as described herein with reference to, and as illustrated in, Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
