Abstract

221,926. Oxley, M. K. Rice-. Aug. 9, 1923. Blind persons, teaching and communicating with.-Relates to devices for enabling the blind to read of the kind in which the reading matter is represented by indications in a travelling record from which signals are transmitted to the fingers of the reader. The record 2, which may be in the form of a perforated band, passes between a series of contact-brushes 4 and a drum 3, to which are connected a battery 8 and an induction-coil 6. The brushes 4 are connected to finger-buttons 5, and the circuits are completed through knobs 10, 10<a> on which the wrists or palms of the hands rest, so that the signals in the record cause small electric shocks to be given to the fingers of the reader. The signals may be in the form of elevations in the record, or a tracker-bar associated with pneumatics may be employed to give motion to key-members on which the fingers rest.
