Abstract
A forced draught air cooler 10 wherein air is forced over a pipe 11 to cool fluid therein, is associated with a motor 13 and a pump 14 driven thereby. A coupling between the motor 13 and pump 14 is formed or provided with fins or vanes 21 and is enclosed in a housing 22 in air flow communication with the air cooler 10. Thus the need for a separate fan is thereby obviated and economy is achieved. <IMAGE>
Description
FORCE DRAUGHT AIR COOLER
This invention relates to an air cooler and in particular a forced draught air cooler.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a forced draught air cooler which is more economic than those currently available.
According to the present invention there is provided a forced draught air cooler in association with driving and driven machines coupled together, the air cooler being characterised in that a coupling between the driving machine and the driven machine is formed or provided with fins or vanes and is enclosed in a housing in air flow communication with the air cooler.
The need for a separate fan is thereby obviated.
The housing is preferably connected to the air cooler by convenient ducting.
The air cooler can be associated with any convenient system or machine which requires to be air cooled or heat exchange. For example, the air cooler may surround a pipe for conducting heated fluid between one location or another. -As a result a heat exchange system is formed.
In another example, the driving machine may drive the driven machine via an oil-filled gearbox whereof the oil requires to be cooled and the air cooler may be associated with the gearbox to achieve this cooling.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic side view of a heat exchange system incorporating a forced draught air cooler according to the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a front view corresponding to Fig. 1.
The air cooler designated 10 surrounds a pipe 11 through which heated fluid passes.
Associated with the air cooler 10 is a machinery arrangement generally indicated at 12 comprising a driving motor 13 and a driven pump 14, the driving shaft 15 of the former being connnected to the driven shaft 16 of the latter by a coupling arrangement 17 including a spacer 18 between two couplings 19, 20.
One of the couplings, namely coupling 19 in this instance, is formed or provided with ventilator fins or blades 21. Both couplings 19 and 20 may be provided with the fins 21.
The coupling arrangement 17 is housed in an open-ended casing 22 connected to the air cooler inlet by ducting 23. The casing 22 may be open at one end only if desired.
Thus, as the machinery arrangement 12 is operating a forced draught air flow from the ventilator fins or vanes 22 is caused to flow into the air cooler 10 for heat exchange purposes.
Claims (6)

A forced draught air cooler in association with driving and driven machines coupled together, the air cooler being characterised in that a coupling between the driving machine and the driven machine is formed or provided with fins or vanes and is enclosed in a housing in air flow communication with the air cooler.
2. A cooler as claimed in claim 1, in which the housing is connected to the air cooler by ducting.
3. A cooler as claimed in claims 1 or 2, surrounding a pipe for conducting heated fluid between one location or another, whereby a heat exchange system is formed.
4. A cooler as claimed in claim 1 or 2 associated with an oil-filled gearbox adapted to transmit drive from the driving machine to the driven machine.
5. A forced draught air cooler in association with driving and driven machine coupled together substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
6. A rotary machinery coupling formed or fitted with fins or blades to provide an air flow during rotation of the coupling.
