Abstract
A one-piece carrying handle (10) for a carton, container or other like object comprises a flexible elongate strap (12) having a securing tongue (14, 16) at each end thereof. Each tongue (14, 16) is set at an angle to the strap and is inserted into a hole in the object to be carried. As the strap is raised so the tongues (14, 16) will come into surface-to-surface contact with the inside wall surface of the object. <IMAGE>
Description
CARRYING HANDLES
SPECIFICATION
This invention relates generally to carrying handles, and is particularly concerned with handles for use with cartons, containers and like objects to enable them more easily to be carried.
The carrying handle of the present invention is particularly adapted for use with relatively lightweight cartons and containers, and in particular cartons and containers weighing less than about 12 Kg.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved carrying handle for cartons, containers and like objects which can be fitted to a carton or the like by simply being pushed through a pair of spaced holes made in one wall of the carton or other object.
Broadly in accordance with the present invention there is provided a one-piece carrying handle for a carton, container or other like object, the handle comprising a flexible elongate strap portion having a securing tongue at each end thereof, each said tongue being set at an angle to the plane of the strap portion and each said tongue having first and second portions respectively extending from one side and from the other side of the strap portion.
With a carrying handle of this construction, when the respective tongues of the handle are pushed through holes in the carton wall and the strap portion is lifted, the securing tongues will make surface-tosurface contact with the inside of the carton wall.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, one presently preferred embodiment of carrying handle in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows one embodiment of carrying handle in accordance with the present invention; and,
Figs. 2a, 2b and 2c illustrate the method of fitting the handle to a carton.
As shown in the drawing, the carrying handle, indicated generally at 10, is preferably a one-piece moulding of plastics material comprising an elongate strap portion 12 which has a degree of flexibility, and a pair of end tongues, indicated generally at 14 and 16. The tongues 14, 16 are integral with the strap portion 12 and are each set at an angle to the general plane of the strap portion. Each tongue 14, 16 comprises a longer portion 18 extending from one side of the strap portion 12 and a shorter portion 20 extending from the other side of the strap portion 12.
Figs. 2a to 2c illustrate how the handle is fitted to the wall of a carton 22. A pair of holes 23 and 24 are cut through the carton wall, and the tongues 14, 16 of the carrying handle are pushed down through the respective holes in the carton wall. Then, when the elongate strap portion 12 is lifted, as in Fig. 2c, the upward pull will cause the tongues 14, 16 to rise into abutting surface-to-surface contact with the underside of the carton wall.
It is an important feature of the carrying handle of the present invention that the length of the strap portion 12 and the angle at which the tongues 14 and 16 are set relative to the strap portion 12 are such that when the handle is lifted, as in Fig. 2c, the tongues will lie parallel to the internal face of the carton and give maximum surface-to-surface contact between the tongues and the carton wall. It is also important that the shorter element 20 of each of the tongues 14, 16 should be long enough to overlie the carton wall adjacent to the holes 23 and 24, in order to minimise any risk of the tongues being pulled out of the holes in the carton wall.
The simple structure of the carrying handle of the present invention makes it particularly appropriate to be manufactured by moulding from a suitable plastics material.
Claims (5)
1. A one-piece carrying handle for a carton, container or other like object, the handle comprising a flexible elongate strap having a securing tongue at each end thereof, each said tongue being set at an angle to the plane of the strap and each said tongue having first and second portions respectively extending from one side and from the other side of the strap.
2. A handle according to claim 1, in which said first and second portions are of unequal length.
3. A handle according to claim 1 or 2, in which the length of the strap and the angle at which the tongues are set relative to the strap are such that when the handle is lifted in use the tongues will lie parallel to the internal face of the object to which the handle is fitted.
4. A one-piece carrying handle as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, moulded from a plastics material.
5. A one-piece carrying handle substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
