Description

""' 17978 Z / - A_.
JSS240489 1 - 1 A POWER NOZZLE FOR A VACUUM CLEANER This invention relates to a power nozzle especially a power nozzle for a vacuum cleaner for home and/or industrial use.
A wide variety of vacuum cleaners are available on today's market. However, most are unable to develop sufficient vacuum to exert a powerful, even suction and vacuum completely across the nozzle to draw the dust and dirt from the surface being cleaned.
It is an object of the present invention therefore to provide a power nozzle for a vacuum cleaner operative to prQvide, when required, an additional suction effect.
With this object in view the present invention provides a power nozzle for a vacuum cleaner having a motor/fan unit for creating a vacuum, and a dust bag, the power nozzle comprising an independent motor/fan unit, means for operating the motor/fan units of the vacuum cleaner and of the power nozzle in tandem for creating an extremely high suction and vacuum at the power nozzle.
By means of the power nozzle of the invention, the suction or vacuum is elevated or "boosted" to a high degree for enhancing cleaning ability. The fan in the power nozzle of the invention, in tandem with another vacuum source, for example, as in a canister type or upright or central system vacuum cleaner, provides an JSS240489 - 2 extremely high volume of air flow at the nozzle to provide for a greater cleaning ability, and to preclude the dust and debris from clogging the unit.
Preferably the power nozzle receives its electric power from the vacuum cleaner. Alternatively it may be provided with or connected to an independent electric power source.
Advantageously the power nozzle comprises an enclosed base, a brush within the base and extending through an opening in the base engageable with a surface to be cleaned, a fan, a housing enclosing the fan, a motor linked to the brush and to the fan, means connecting the motors of the vacuum cleaner and of the power nozzle to a source of electric power, and means connecting the opening in the base to the fan housing of the power nozzle and to the dust bag of the vacuum cleaner, whereby actuation of the motors rotates the brush and operates the fans in tandem for creating an extremely high suction and vacuum at the opening of the power nozzle to forcefully draw dust and debris into the vacuum cleaner dust bag.
The invention also provides an assembly comprising a vacuum cleaner and a complemental power nozzle, each having a respective independent motor/fan unit which motor/fan units are operable in tandem.
The invention further provides a vacuum cleaner having a vacuum creating motor/fan unit and a dust bag, the vacuum cleaner further including an enclosed base, a A, i JSS240489 - 3 brush within the base and extending through an opening in the base engageable with a surface to be cleaned, a secondary fan, a housing enclosing the secondary fan, a secondary motor linked to the brush and secondary fan, means connecting the vacuum cleaner motor and the secondary motor to a source of electric power, and means connecting the opening in the base to the secondary fan housing and to the dust bag of the vacuum cleaner, whereby simultaneous actuation of the motors rotates the brush and operates the fans in tandem for creating an extremely high suction and vacuum at the base opening to forcefully draw dust and debris into the vacuum cleaner dust bag.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the power nozzle of the invention coupled to a canister-type vacuum cleaner; Fig.2 is a side elevational view of the power nozzle of the invention coupled to an upright-type vacuum cleaner; Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the power nozzle of the invention coupled to a central-type vacuum cleaner; Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the power nozzle of the invention; Fig. 5 is a side elevational view similar to Fig. 4 with the cover removed; Fig. 6 is a side elevational view as seen from the opposite side of Fig. 5; and JSS240489 - 4 - Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the power nozzle with the cover removed.
The power nozzle of the invention is generally indicated by 10 and is readily adaptable for use with a canister-type vacuum cleaner, generally indicated by A, as seen in Fig. 1; or with an upright-type vacuum cleaner, generally indicated by B, as seen in Fig. 2; or with a central-type vacuum cleaner, generally indicated by C, as seen in Fig. 3.
In each instance, the power nozzle serves to augment, or "boost" the suction and cleaning power of the unit to which it is coupled.
Power nozzle 10 includes a generally rectangular base 12 having a pair of spaced wheels 14 journalled relative thereto adjacent its rearward edge for rolling engagement with the floor F or other surface to be cleaned, and a transversely-extending roller 16 rotatably mounted relative thereto adjacent its forward edge and having spaced rows of bristles 18 extending outwardly therefrom through a transversely-extending opening 19 in base 12. Bristles 18 are adapted to contact the floor F or rug or other surface to be cleaned.
Roller 16 is rotated by a belt 20 entrained around a pulley 22 fixed to the roller shaft 24 and around one end 26A of a drive shaft 26 extending outwardly from one side of a motor 28 spaced from the roller and fixed to base 12.
3 c JSS240489 - 5 An opposite end 26B of drive shaft 26 extends outwardly from the opposite side of motor 28 and has a fan 30 fixed to its outer free end and disposed within an enclosed fan housing fixed 32 to base 12 adjacent motor 28.
A flexible hose 34 extends between an air outlet 36 of a roller housing 38 which houses roller 16 and an air inlet 40 on a side wall of fan housing 32.
An air outlet 42 is provided on the upper wall of fan housing 32 and extends upwardly therefrom through a cover 44 releasably engaged with base 12.
As seen in Fig. 4 the under side of cover 44 is provided with a transversely extending abutment wall 45 adjacent its forward edge adapted to overlie and tightly engage the upper surface of roller housing 38, thus making the housing air tight, except for opening 19 in base 12, when the cover is engaged with the base.
When fan 30 is rotated, it draws air into power nozzle 10 through roller opening 19 and through outlet 36 of roller housing 38 into flexible hose 34 and into fan housing 32 through inlet 40 and expels the air outwardly from the fan housing through outlet 42.
An on-off switch 46 is provided on base 12 for controlling motor 28 and extends outwardly of cover 44 and is connected between motor 28 and an electric power cord 48 for connecting power nozzle 10 to an external power source, or to the canister-type vacuum A, or to the upright-type vacuum B, or to the central-type vacuum 1 JSS240489 - 6 C, as will appear.
As seen in Fig. 1, electric power cord 48 of power nozzle 10 may be connected to an electric outlet 50 provided on canister-type vacuum A, with electric power cord 48 being clamped to or formed integrally with an upright connector tube 52 and a flexible hose 54 connecting between fan housing outlet 42 of the power nozzle and a dust bag compartment 56 of the canistertype vacuum.
A combination motor/fan unit generally indicated by 58 is disposed within canister-type vacuum A in sealing engagement with dust bag compartment 56, with the motor/fan unit creating a vacuum within the dust bag compartment as the fan rotates.
Electric power to motor/fan unit 58 is provided by an electric cord 60 controlled by a switch 62.
Fan 30 of power nozzle 10 operates in tandem with, and augments fan 58 of canister-type vacuum A to provide an extremely strong suction and vacuum at roller 16 of the power nozzle.
The fan and brush of the power nozzle create a strong suction completely across opening 19 of base 12 to draw dust and dirt from the surface being cleaned into the power nozzle where it is subjected to the additional vacuum created by fan 58 of the canister to forcefully bring the dust and dirt into the dust bag compartment of the canister.
This double vacuum insures against dust and debris C 1 JSS240489 - 7 from plugging the opening 19 or hoses within the power nozzle or connecting between the power nozzle and the canister.
Front swivel casters 64 and rear wheels 66 provide mobility to the canister type vacuum in known manner.
With reference now to Fig. 2, electric power cord 48 of power nozzle 10 may be connected to an electric outlet 70 provided on upright-type vacuum B. An upright connector tube 72 of vacuum B is connected at its lower end to fan nuusing outlet 42 of power nozzle 10, with the upper end of connector tube 72 being connected to a dust bag 74 of the vacuum.
A combination motor/fan unit generally indicated by 76 is disposed within upright-type vacuum B in sealing engagement with dust bag 74, with the motor/fan unit creating a vacuum within the dust bag as the fan rotates. Electric power to motor/fan unit 76 is provided by an electric cord 78 controlled by a switch 80.
Fan 30 of power nozzle 10 operates in tandem with and augments fan 76 of upright type vacuum B to provide an extremely strong suction and vacuum at roller 16 of the power nozzle to enhance the pickup of debris and to prevent dust and dirt from plugging opening 19 of the power nozzle.
With reference now to Fig. 3, electric power cord 48 of power nozzle 10 may be connected to any convenient electric outlet, such as a wall outlet or the like, not JSS240489 shown.
