Description
I_ A Method of Transferring Information in a Paging System.
1 22 1 74Q0 The subject invention concerns a method of transferring coded information in a paging system from a stationary or mobile first transmitter/receiver to a mobile second transmitter/receiver (pocket unit) with possibility to store the information received and preseot it in a-display, each message transmitted from the first transmitter/receiver having attached thereto a label to identify the message.
A message of this kind is known from the'Swedish Published Specification 8405959-1. In accordance with the teachings of this prior-art publication, when the message is repeated several times to ensure that it reaches the receiver, an identifying label is transmitted together with the message. This label allows the receiving apparatus to determine whether a certain message has already been registered and stored in the receiver and therefore may be disregarded. In this way, less of the capacity of the memory of the receiver need to be utilized.
The method in accordance with the subject invention is a further development of this prior-art method and provides an alternative to or a supplementation of this prior-art technology. The invention is characterized therein that the second transmitter/receiver is provided with a receipt button which, when operated, activates the transmitter of the second transmitter/receiver to transmit a signal of message received back to the first transmitter/receiver, said message received signal i ncl udi ng sai d i denti fyi ng 1 abel.
The invention will be described in closer detail in the following with reference to some exemplary embodiments.
Paging systems are widely used in e.g. hospitals. Doctors or nurses in the wards may be summoned quickly by being called over the paging system from a transmitting base station. However, often the person being called is ambulating and when called may be temporarily in an area where the reception is bad. For this reason, paging messages are repeated as a matter of routine several times in order to ensure that the message is received by the person being called.
2 A common situation is that for instance a doctor puts down his pocket unit on his desk in his office and leaves it there while he goes for lunch and that while he is away he is summoned to a meeting. The transmission of the message from the transmitting base station is effected in the known manner described above, i.e. the message is preceded by an identifying label, preferably in the form of a digital serial number.
The doctor-s pocket unit is provided with a built-in transmitter and a transmitter button. As soon as the doctor returns and discovers the paging message displayed on his pocket unit, he depresses the transmitter button on the unit, thus causing a message received signal to be transmitted back to the base station. The signal includes the identifying label. Consequently, the base station will receive confirmation that the individual called by the paging system has now received the message.
An important exemplary application of the method in accordance with the invention is for instance when the transmitting base station is calling a team of specialists in an emergency, such as a cardiac arrest situation. A team of this kind may include e.g. a surgeon, a surgeon's assistant, an anaesthetist and some assisting nurses. The members of the team may be scattered over a large area and be in different places but need to be summoned quickly to the operating theatre. In this case it is not sufficient that the base station confirms that each call has been transmitted to each one of the pocket units of the team members. It is not until the message received signals from each one of the indivuals concerned have all been received by the base station that it is fully confirmed that all team members have received the message and are acting accordingly.
The invention is not limited to the uses described in the aforegoing but it could be modified in a variety of ways within the scope of the appended claims. For instance, receipt of call could be confirmed in other ways than by transmitting the identifying label back to the base station. Instead, part of the message could be transmitted back to the base station. In some cases it may be more convenient to arrange for the pocket unit to transmit the message received signal back to the base station automatically as soon as it receives a message instead of not transmitting this signal until the t 3
