Description

4 1 PIPELINE LAYING SYSTEM AND VESSEL a G?1PLICATE 2217424 This invention
relates to a reel pipelayi'ng system and a method of converting a vessel to one on which one reel is disposed for laying a pipeline in waters having depths limited only by the strength of the pipe. More particularly, the invention pertains to a new type of pipeline layout system and vessel in which one reel is employed for storing and unspooling a rigid walled pipeline. The laying system provides for the layout of a pipeline from a single reel and for the adjustment of water entry angles over a wide angular range.
A prior art reel pipelaying ship is described in the following U.S. Patents, all assigned to the assignee of the invention hereof:
Springett, et al U.S. Patent No. 4,230,421 Uyeda, et al U.S. Patent No. 4,269,540 Yenzer, et al U.S. Patent No. 4,297,054 Springett, et al U.S. Patent No. 4,340,322 Uyeda, et al U.S. Patent No. 4,345,855 The disclosures of these five single reel patents are hereby incorporated as though fully set forth herein.
The present invention enables a dynamically positioAed vessel to be alternately converted between a single pipeline laying capability for example as described in the above mentioned US patentsand a vessel having a storage reel and a pipeline laying device adapted for being mounted adj acent the stern of said vessel downstream of said reel in the direction of unspooling and wherein said laying device includes pipeline support means adapted f or providing moving contact for said pipeline and including a pipe take-off structure adapted for arcuate movement in spaced relationship about the periphery of said support means. The method comprises removing the pivotal ramp pipe straightening and 2 tensioning assembly from the deck of said vessel; installing an operational line laying device adjacent the stern of said vessel, the laying device including a drum rotatable about an axis extending laterally of the vessel and adapted for providing moving contact for said pipeline and said means interconnected and adapted for permitting layout of the pipeline from the vessel downwardly; and providing the main storage reel with motive power means having both spooling direction power and unspooling direction braking systems.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying f igure which shows a side view of a vessel converted by the method of the invention.
In the figure, a vessel 12 has been converted by removal of a pivotal ramp pipe straightening and tensioning assembly and has an operational line laying device adjacent the stern of the vessel 12, including a storage reel 20, and a drum 26, the latter replacing the ramp pipe. A single pipeline 22 is shown being led downwardly from the drum 26. The reel 20 is powered in a spooling direction and braked in an unspooling direction. The drum 26 provides moving contact for the pipeline 22. A pipe take-off structure 30 is movable arcuately adjacent the drum 26.
The vessel may be reconnected by the reverse operation. Reference is made to copending application No.8604252 which gives a complete description of the structure of an example of a converted vessel.

Claims (2)

  1. P, 111 A method of converting a single pipeline laying vessel having main storage reel and a pivotal ramp pipe straightening and tensioning assembly to a vessel having a storage reel and a pipeline laying device adapted for being mounted adjacent the stern of said vessel downstream of said.reel in the direction of unspooling and wherein said laying device includes pipeline support means adapted for providing moving contact for said pipeline and including a pipe take-off structure adapted for arcuate movement in spaced relationship about the periphery of said suport means; said method comprising the steps of: removing the pivotal ramp pipe straightening and tensioning assembly from the deck of said vessel; installing an operational line laying device adjacent the stern of said vessel, the laying device including a drum rotatable about an axis extending laterally of the vessel and adapted for providing moving contact for said pipeline and said means interconnected and adapted for permitting layout of the pipeline from the vessel downwardly and providing the main storage reel with motive power means having both spooling direction power and unspooling direction braking systems.
  2. 2. The method of conversion according to Claim 1 including the step of: reconverting the pipeline laying vessel to a single pipeline laying vessel having a pivotal ramp straightening and tension assembly by removing the operational line laying device and reinstalling the pivotal support ramp and straightening and tension equipment assemblies.
