Abstract

A locking device for a video cassette cover 3 comprises a pivoted locking member 10 urged into the locking position by a flat spring 16 which is integrally formed on the inside of the upper member 1 of the cassette housing, and extends vertically from the upper member. With the use of the device of the present invention, the cassette will have lower manufacturing costs, and be much easier to assemble, compared with a conventional cassette in which a separate metal torsion spring is used. The locking member which is of the type with locking and release protrusions 12, 13 has an inclined face 15 which cooperates with the spring 16 on assembly. <IMAGE>

Description

LOCKING DEVICE FOR VIDEO TAPE CASSETTE COVER The present invention relates to locking devices for video tape cassette covers.
As is well known, a video tape cassette is normally provided with a front cover which opens and closes, and when the cassette is not loaded into a recorder, the cover is locked to the cassette in order to protect the tape, whereas, when the cassette is loaded into a recorder, the locking of the cover is automatically released.
Generally in the case of a VHS mode video cassette, a fitting pin is included in the cover to allow the cover to be locked/released in the manner described above. A conventional video cassette as shown in Figure 5 of the attached drawings has a spring-retaining protrusion 22 in an aligned relation with two supporting shafts 21,23 of a pivotable coverlocking member 20. A metal torsion spring 24 is mounted on said protrusion 22 such that one end of the spring 24 abuts the locking member 20 and the other end of the spring 24 abuts a wall portion 8 of the lower cassette member 2, thus providing the spring force which is necessary to realize the lock/release function of the cover.
This kind of structure has the disadvantages that, due to the use of a separate spring, manufacturing costs are increased, the assembly is complicated, and malfunctions during use are liable to occur. In order to overcome such kinds of disadvantages, the present applicant has filed Korean Utility Model Application No. 87-12393 and No. 87-12394, but the embodiments disclosed in these applications need still more simplification.
According to the invention, there is provided a locking device for a video tape cassette cover comprising: a pivotable locking member which has supporting shafts which are mounted on supporting walls in the interior of the lower member of the cassette, said locking member being provided with release means and a locking protrusion passing through a hole in the lower member of the cassette and into a hole or recess in the cover; and a spring member integrally formed with and depending from the inside of the upper member of the cassette and engaging the inner side of the locking member body below the supporting shafts so as to resiliently urge it into the locked position.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a video tape cassette; Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of a corner of the video tape cassette of Figure 1 showing the locking device of the present invention; Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken along the line A-A of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken along the line B-B of Figure 1; and Figure 5 is an exploded perspective view of a corner of a conventional video tape cassette.
Referring to Figure 2, a locking device for a cassette cover 3 is illustrated for a known type of video cassette in which an upper member 1 and a lower member 2 are assembled with a cover 3. Supporting shafts 11, 11' of a pivotable locking member 10 are retained in supporting walls 4, 4' which are formed in the interior of the lower member 2, while a known type of locking protrusion 12 on the locking member 10 passes through a hole 5 in member 2 and into a keying hole or recess 6 in the cover 3. A release protrusion 13 on the locking member 10 protrudes through another hole 7 in member 2, and the locking member 10 is such that its upper portion 14 is located below the supporting shafts 11, 11', with an inclined face 15 provided on its inner side. The upper member 1 is provided with an integral flat spring 16 which extends from the inside of the upper member 1 at right angles, so that the inner side of the upper portion 14 of the locking member 10 can be urged in a clockwise direction by said flat spring 16.
In assembly of the device, the supporting shafts 11, 11' of the locking member 10 are mounted on the supporting walls 4, 4' of the lower member 2, the cover 3 is fitted to the upper member 1 in a conventional manner, and the lower member 2 is then assembled with the upper member 1.
During such assembly, the flat spring 16 smoothly slides along the inclined face 15 which is formed on the upper portion 14 of the locking member 10, and resiliently urges the inner side of the locking member 10 outwardly as shown in Figures 3 and 4. The upper portion 14 of the locking member 10 which is urged outwardly by the flat spring 16 is located below the supporting shafts 11, 11' and therefore the body of the locking member 10 is urged in a clockwise direction (as seen in Figures 2 and 4). Thus the locking protrusion 12 and the release protrusion 13 will normally protrude outwardly of the member 2 through the respective holes 5 and 7.
So long as the release protrusion 13 is not pressed, the locking protrusion 23 remains inserted in the keying hole or recess 6 of the cover 3, making it impossible for the cover 3 to be opened. If the release protrusion 13 is pressed, the body of the locking member 10 is rotated anticlockwise, and the locking protrusion 12 is withdrawn, thereby allowing the cover to open.
If the release protrusion 13 is pressed and released, the locking member 10 returns to the locked state due to the action of the flat spring 16.
As described above, the mutual interaction between the locking member 10 and the flat spring 16 provides smooth operation of the locking and release of the cover. Since no separate metal spring is required, the manufacturing costs are lowered, assembly is facilitated, and malfunctions are unlikely.
