Abstract

An ileostomy pouch made from two superposed sheets of liquid proof synthetic plastics material one having an overlay of needled synthetic plastics film, said film and one wall each having a stomal oriface therein and the two walls and the film being integrated by a peripheral weld. Disclosed are an ileostimy pouch having a filter housing attached to a wall thereof, the filter housing constructed integrally with a lid thereof so that the housing can be opened and closed for filter replacement by hinging action of the lid.

Description

ILEOSTOMY APPLIANCE This invention relates to an ileostomy appliance. These appliances are worn by those who have suffered a surgical intervention procedure.
It is an aim of the invention to provide an improved appliance for this purpose.
According to one aspect of the invention, an ileostomy pouch is made from two superposed sheets of liquid proof synthetic plastics material one having an overlay of needled synthetic plastics film, said film and one wall each having a stomal orifice therein and the two walls and the film being integrated by a peripheral weld.
According to another aspect of the invention, an ileostomf appliance has a filter housing attached thereto, the filter housing being constructed integrally with a lid thereof so that the housing can be opened and closed for filter replacement by a hinging action of the lid.
According to another aspect of the invention, the filter is located in an upper region of the bag and offset from the vertical centre line thereof; the bag also has a lower outlet defined by a continuation of the bag walls and closable by folding over and clipping the plastics material of the outlet.
The filter housing preferably has the construction disclosed and illustrated in our U.K. Patent Application No. 87 04826 therein but modified in that the lid is made integral with the housing and is joined thereto b) a plastics hinge.
The invention will be better understood from the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof, given with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic cross-section and Figure 2 is a rear view of one embodiment of ileostomy pouch in accordance with the invention; Figures 3 and 4 are respectively front view and cross-sectional view of a filter housing employed in an ileostomy pouch according to the invention; Figures 5 and 6 are respectively front view and cross-sectional view of a cover or lid having a retainer ring integral therewith for use in conjunction with the filter housing of Figures 2 and 3; and Figures 7 and 8 are respectively cross-sectional views and front views of one example of a filter usable in the filter housing shown in Figures 3-6.
In the drawings, like parts are represented by like reference numerals.
The rear side of the bag is considered to be that nearer to the wearers body when worn.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 the illustrated ileostomy pouch includes a front wall 10, a rear VNall 12, and a so-called "comfort layer" needled film 14.
These are secured by a weld seam, seen at 16 in Figure 2, extending around the periphery. The wall 12 has a stomal orifice 18 therein, and the wall 10 carries a filter housing for a filter generally indicated at 20.
Attached by a plastics welding or other suitable attachment operation to the layers 12 and 14 is a coupling element 22 intended to co-operate with a suitable complementary coupling element. These elements will not be further described, it being preferred to employ the system disclosed and illustrated in British Patent No. 1 571 657. Other coupling systems are known but are lesspreferred. The bag outlet portion 24 is open at its lower end 26, the weld 16 not being continued thereacross.
The preferred form of filter housing can be seen in Figures 3 and 4 and generally comprises a filter housing, a cover or lid, and a filter disc therein.
The filter housing has a flange 30 having surface 32 which can be attached in any suitable way, e.g. by plastics welding to the exterior of the bag wall 10 at an upper region of the pouch. Preferably (as shown in Figure 2) the filter is offset from the pouch centre line. It has been found that offsetting in this way gives better results in practice. The filter housing is substantially as described and illustrated in U.K. Patent Application No. 87 04826 but is improved thereover in that the lid or cover 40 of the filter housing is made from synthetic plastics material integrally with a ring or loop 42 connected to the cover by a plastics hinge 44. In assembly of the filter housing on the bag, the ring 42 is secured in any suitable manner, e.g. by heat welding or RF welding, to the upper surface of the flange 30, so rendering the cover 40 captive to the ileostomy pouch.
The filter housing 20 is designed to accommodate a disc filter which has been specially designed to be particularly efficacious in practice. The preferred filter disc is based upon the general teaching of U.K. Patent Application No. 2 171 052. The illustrated filter disc 80 includes as filtering medium of disc of polyurythane foam carrying activated carbon with acrylate binder. On each surface of this disc there is placed an adhesive web based upon an EVA synthetic plastics polymer, and by virtue of this adhesive, on one surface there is attached to a cover layer of a non-woven synthetic material known as "Permair S" proofed with a fabric protector. The other surface of the disc filter has attached thereto in a similar way a cover layer of a non-woven synthetic material known as "Permair F" proofed with fabric protector.
These two layers are differently coloured so that the user of the ileostomy appliance can be instructed by the accompanying literature to always insert the filter with one colour side facing towards the bag and the other colour side facing outwardly. One side may be white and the other any desired colour.
