Description
r'. r F - ' 1 ( 40566/wsp TITLE Vehicle Tyre Tread Profile This invention
relates to a pneumatic vehicle tyre tread profile, particularly for passenger car tyres of radial type construction.
Tr(had profiles with a continuous cross-groove arrangement are known. Profiles of this kind are described, for example, in DE-PS 3038189 and DE-OS 344504.
The pairs of blocks in the central zone of the tyre in the case of the profile described in 3138189 render it insufficiently stable in the peripheral direction, thus adversely affecting certain driving properties, such as directional stability, and resistance to wear.
The rectilinear course taken by the grooves in the shoulder zone also detracts from noiseless running.
This invention seeks to provide a tread profile wherein demands made on a tyre will be more satisfactorily met, particularly as regards the abrasion resistance, aquaplaning characteristics, cornering and quietness of running.
An object ofthis invention is to provide a tread profile for an all season tyre using a suitable 2 - 40566/wsp v combination of profiled elements and design.
According to this invention there is provided a pneumatic vehicle tyre with a tread profile mainly comprising an arrangement of transverse grooves which are continuous from one edge of the tread to the other, wherein a transverse groove in a zone representing approximately the middle 35% of the width of the tread profile is stepped at an angle of about 75o with respect to the periphery direction, the individual sections of the transverse grooves being interconnected by short longitudinal grooves in order to produce a stepped configuration, while the peripheral lines defining the portion of the middle zone is followed as regards the angle of 75o by the course taken by the transverse grooves which are specularly symmetrical to the said angle and which form a step through short rectilinear section and terminate at an angle of about 900 to the periphery in the shoulder zone, the transverse grooves in the two marginal zones of the profile being in each case interconnected by three longitudinal grooves stepped in the idi ddle, the aforesaid arrangement for the elements of ,the profile being repeated at intervals of 0.3 to 0.6% of periphery of the tyre.
Ereferably the part of the arcuate zone of the transverse gtooves which are situated in the ground- contact surface of the tyre amount to about 40% and the transverse grooves are provided with recesses in zone A.
This invention is further explained below in more detail with reference to an embodiment shown as an example in the drawings.
The drawing shows a plan view of a tread profile, consisting of a system of transverse grooves 1-1 and longitudinal grooves 3,4 and 5, extending in a peripheral direction with the latter being stepped in the central region of the groove.
The transverse grooves 1 are so designed that they take a stepped course in the zone A with a transition to a curved shape in the direction of the shoulder on the peripheral line a,.
The transverse grooves 1 in the zone A proceed at an angle of 750 in relation to the direction taken by the periphery of the tyre and are interconnected by short longitudinal grooves 2. On the peripheral line a the angle of 750 is mirror-inverted in the direction of the shoulder of the tyre, the transverse grooves 1 thereafter following an arcuate path. This latter is due to the fact that the transverse grooves 1 in the zone of the shoulder consist of four to five rectilinear sections of which the angle changes stepwise in the direction of the shoulder to alDout 90o. These transverse grooves ate_ 4 - 40566/wsp positioned at a distance corresponding to 0.3 to 0.6% of the periphery of the tyre. The zone A amounts to about 35%.of the width of the profile, while that part of the arcuate transverse grooves 1 which is situated in the ground contact surface of the tyre amounts to about 40% of the profile.
The transverse grooves 1, which in zone A consist of five portions 12 to 16, are provided with recesses 6 to 11, the middle portion 14 of the transverse groove having two recesses 8, 9, while all the other portions 12, 13, and 16 have recesses-6, 7, 10 and 11 respectively directed towards the centre of the tyre.
The transverse grooves 1 are interconnected by longitudinal grooves 3, 4 and 5 stepped in the-middle.
The connection of the transverse grooves 1 with the longitudinal grooves 2, 3, leads to the formation of a wide trapezoidal groove 17 in the direction of the periphery of the tyre, while the connection of the curved portion of the transverse grooves by means of stepped longitudinal grooves 4, 5, forms further narrow trapezoidal longitudinal grooves passing the whole way round.
The system of grooves described above produces profiled blocks which are stepped in the central part of the tyre while in the shoulder zone they extend - - 40566/wsp approximately at right angles in the transverse direction. These rows of "shoulder blocks" are made up of 3 parts. All the profiled blocks have fine cuts proceeding at the same angle as the edges of the respective blocks.
The advantages of the construction according to the invention derives from the profile elements as a whole, which ensure that the vehicle roadholding and cornering is reliable and which, above all, result in comparatively quiet running.
It is in particular' due to the angular stepped shape of the transverse grooves in zone A that the effective length of the edge is appreciably increased, with the resulting improvement in the roadholding property of the tyre and in steering accuracy around bends and along straight paths. The longitudinal and transverse groove combination adopted results in an open-groove system, ensuring good water clearance in wet weather and also satisfactory traction under moderate winter conditions.
The curved shape of the transverse grooves 1 in the shoulder zone and the transition to a stepped zone ensure that the separate edges enter the ground contact surface at different distances, with the noise level thus being noticeably reduced.
