Abstract
A tacker pack is provided with a backing card 10 and a transparent plastics bubble enclosing the tacker, i.e. stapler, except for the operating lever 22 of the tacker which protrudes through an opening 26, which is normally obturated by moveable flat 25 and which coincides with the handlehole 15 of the tacker so that a customer can put his hand through the tacker handle hole 15 and the opening in the pack, after pivoting back the flap where by the tacker (without fasteners) can be tested by the user without having to open the pack. <IMAGE>
Description
A PACK FOR A TACKER
This invention relates to a pack for a tacker.
Tackers are used to drive fasteners such as U-type staples or nails into a work piece, for example, of wood. Such tackers have a casing with an elongate handle hole. To operate the tacker all four fingers of a hand are put through the handle hole, while a lever that protrudes obliquely from the casing is pressed down with the ball of the thumb. To actuate the tacker by depressing the lever, a spring is stressed to provide thrust energy for driving the staple or the nail on its sudden release. Manual operation of the tacker requires considerable strength. Thus, it is important for a customer to know the strength required to operate the tacker, in order to decide, whether a tacker offered in a shop is suitable.
Tackers and other devices are known to be sold in packs that have a backing and a moulding, formed of deep-drawn, rigid plastic sheet. The packed device is located in the moulding and is enclosed on all sides by the moulding and the backing. Such a pack guarantees that the device has not been sold or used, since the pack can only be opened by damaging the back or the moulding. When a tacker is sold in such a pack, the customer cannot test the strength required to operate the tacker.
According to the present invention there is provided a pack for a tacker, the tacker comprising a casing with a handle hole and a pivoting lever extending from the casing, the pack having a flat backing and a moulding protruding from the backing to define a cavity substantially adapted to the contour of the casing, the moulding having an opening substantially corresponding to the handle hole and coinciding with a recess in the backing; the pack having an aperture for receiving the pivoting lever of the tacker so that the pivoting lever may protrude freely from the cavity.
An embodiment in accordance with the present invention thus provides a pack which simultaneously offers an indication of whether the tacker has been taken out (and perhaps used), as well as a way to depress the handle.
Since the lever is not enclosed within the pack, it is possible to hold the tacker, together with the pack, as it will be held in normal use. Thus, the customer can depress the handle and test the strength required to depress the lever until the spring is released. Since the tacker does not contain any staples, while packed, no staples can be ejected when depressing the handle repeatedly in this way.
All operating elements, except the lever, that serve, for example, to control the power of impact, to refill clamps, or to lock the thrust release, are located in and covered by the moulding, so that they cannot be operated while the tacker is still in the pack. Thus, no undesired tampering can occur. In particular, no detachable parts can be taken off the tacker.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show how it may be carried into effect, reference will be made by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a pack containing a tacker;
Fig. 2 is a view in the direction of the arrow II in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view in the direction of the arrow III in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a rear view of the packing; and
Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line V-V in Fig.
4.
The pack has a backing 10 made of cardboard, which is folded once, thus forming a double ply. The back ply 11 is substantially continuous, whereas the front ply 12 has a recess 14 corresponding to the contour of the tacker 13.
The tacker 13 is disposed in the rigid moulding 14, consisting of transparent plastics sheet. The moulding is adapted to the shape of the tacker and is oversize to accommodate the tacker easily. The moulding is of the tub-type, having a flange-like rim 14a that fits flat between the two plies 11, 12 of the backing 10 and is glued to the rear ply 11. Thus the moulding 1 4 and the backing 10 together define a cavity which corresponds in shape to the casing of the tacker.
The casing of the tacker 13 has an elongate handle hole 15, closed on all sides. In use, staples are ejected out of a staple outlet 16, located at the bottom of the casing. The power of impact can be regulated by a control knob 17. Further operating elements 18, 19, 20 and 21 for impact control, the opening of the staple magazine and changing the front plate, are provided. The lever 22 protrudes diagonally upward from the casing. If the fingers of one hand are put through the handle hole 15, lever 22 can be depressed towards the casing with the ball of the thumb, until the lever hits the stud 23. The stud 23 is a locking stud to which the depressed lever 22 can be fixed by a longitudinal motion.
Near the casing of the tacker, the front ply 12 of the backing has a cutout 24, through which the moulding 14 protrudes outwardly. Thus, the tacker 13 sits next to the rear ply 11, which has a stamped out flap 25, tilted to one side and located near the handle hole 15 of the tacker. Putting a hand into the handle hole causes the flap 25 to swing out, thus opening a recess 26, which coincides with the handle hole 15 and which has the same shape and size as the l-atter. The fold of the flap 25 runs along the upper edge of the handle hole.
All operating elements of the tacker 13, except the lever 22 and the stud 23, are enclosed by the moulding 14 and the backing 10. The edge 27 of the moulding 14, surrounding the recess 26, reaches, or nearly reaches, the ply 11 of the backing 10.
The operating characteristics of the tacker can be tested with the tacker in the pack. This is achieved by putting one hand through the recess 26 into the handle hole 15. Then the lever 22, which normally projects beyond the edges of the backing 10 and the moulding 14, can be depressed without damaging the pack. When depressed, it can also be fixed to the stud 23.
The operating parts 17 to 21 of the tacker are securely located in the moulding and cannot be operated or adjusted.
Adjacent to the cavity accommodating the tacker, the moulding 14 has a pocket 28 containing a supply of staples 29.
