Abstract
A vehicle anti-theft device can be used to prevent car radios, cassette players or compact disc players or the like (16) from being stolen and also to prevent the vehicle itself from being stolen. The device comprises a first member (21) to bear against part of the vehicle such as a gear change lever (12), a second member (20) to bear against the radio or the like (16). The first and second members are movably located relative to one another and a lock (24) is used to lock them against further movement. <IMAGE>
Description
Vehicle Anti-Theft Device
This invention relates to a vehicle anti-theft device.
Vehicles are often fitted with a rectangular metal box of standard dimensions integral with or permanently fitted in the fascia or dash-board. The end of the box nearest the rear of the vehicle is open so that an entertainment or communication apparatus, such as a radio, cassette player, or compact disc player may be slid into the box and secured therein. The face of the entertainment or communication apparatus bearing controls thereof is then approximately flush with the open end of the box. Such entertainment or communication apparatus is valuable and once thieves have gained access to the interior of the vehicle, it is often easy for them to detach the entertainment or communication apparatus from the box and steal it.
According to the present invention there is provided a vehicle anti-theft device including first and second members, one end of the first member being adapted to bear against or overlie part of the vehicle, one end of the second member being adapted to bear against or overlie at least part of the face of said entertainment or communication apparatus, when secured in said box, or against part of said box, and the other ends of said first and second members being relatively movably located to each other, and locking means optionally to inhibit movement of said first ends towards each other.
Preferably the first and second members are telescopic, one within the other, whereby they may be telescopically extended until the said one ends bear against or overlie the part of the vehicle and the face of the entertainment or communication apparatus, and locking means to inhibit shortening of the combined first and second members.
Advantageously, the one end of the second member includes a shroud having features to engage the periphery of said face, to prevent movement of the one end of the second member in a plane parallel to the face.
Preferably, the one end of the first member is adapted to engage against part of a vehicle control member so as to inhibit movement of the control member when the vehicle anti-theft device is installed and locked, to prevent stealing of the vehicle or the entertainment or communication apparatus from the vehicle.
The vehicle control member may be a gear change lever, which must be moved to a rear-most position before the anti-theft device is locked. For this purpose, an engagement member may be provided, to be fitted on the gear change lever, so that the one end of the first member can be engaged therewith and not be disengaged therefrom when the anti-theft device is locked.
various embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective drawing showing part of a vehicle in which is installed a vehicle anti-theft device according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a section along the line II-II in
Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of another embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings, part of a vehicle fascia or dash-board 10 has integral therewith or permanently fixed therein an open ended metal box 11, the open end facing rearwards, in the general direction of a vehicle control member such as a gear change lever 12 having a knob 13. There is provided a collar 14 which can be slid down the gear lever 12, after the knob 13 has been temporarily removed, and locked in position by a grub screw 15 located in the side of the gear lever 12 nearest the box 11.
The box 11 is of standard dimensions to receive and retain a radio, cassette player, compact disc player or other similar entertainment or communication apparatus 16. A face 17 of the apparatus 16 bearing control knobs 1E is approximately flush with the open end of the box 11.
A short metal shroud 19 has thin peripheral flanges 20 joined only to the rear face of the shroud, so that the flanges 19 can be bent with the fingers until they can easily enter the small gaps between the box 11 and the apparatus 16.
A rectangular section metal tube 21 is formed at the rear end with open ended slots 22, which can be slid onto the gear lever 12 with the collar 14 inside the tube 21 and the grub screw 15 inaccessible.
A further rectangular section metal tube 23 is telescopically slidable within the tube 21, the tube 21 having a lock 24 of the kind in which, a peg 26 is spring loaded so as to protrude into an appropriate one of a row of holes 27 in the tube 23, to lock the combined tubes 21,23 at a fixed length.
When a key 25 is turned, this causes the peg 26 to retract into the lock 24, thereby unlocking the tubes. The front end of the tube 23 is closed by a threaded plate 28, into which is secured one end of an angled bolt 29. Ihe other threaded end of the bolt 29 is passed through a domed washer 30 and a slot in the rear face of the shroud 19 to a nut 31.
To install the vehicle anti-theft device, the gear lever 12 is first moved to its rearmost position, which in the case of a manual gear change is usually the second or fourth or reverse gear position. The lock 24 is unlocked and the flanges 20 of the shroud 19 are carefully inserted between the apparatus 16 and the box 11. Ihe tube 21 is pulled backwards along the tube 23 until the tube 21 abuts the gear lever 12, in the slots 22, with the collar 14 inside the tube 21. At maximum extension of the tube 23 from the tube 21, the peg 26 is locked in the nearest hole 27. If the peg 26 does not align with a hole 27, the device is removed and the angled bolt 29 rotated a few turns in the threaded plate 28 and another trial fitting made.
Similarly, at the first fitting, the nut 31 may be slackened and the bolt 29 moved up or down the slot in the shroud 19, until a comfortable fit of the components is achieved, and the nut 31 re-tightened.
In some vehicles, security of the apparatus alone may be achieved by locating the rear end of the tube 21 on a component, part or fitment of the vehicle which is not itself a control member. Furthermore, a control member other than the gear lever 12 may be used, for example it may be possible to locate the rear end of the tube 21 on a hand brake lever in such a way that the hand brake cannot be released once the tube 25 is attached and locked.
The ends of the flanges 20 may be provided with rubber or plastic beading to avoid causing scratches as they are inserted.
Figure 3 shows one embodiment of the invention applied to a handbrake lever 32, having a hand grip 33 and a release button 34 in the end face thereof. A hollow nylon tube 35, forming part of the anti-theft device, is slid over the lever 32 until an integral internal diaphragm 36 abuts the end face of the lever 32. A central hole in the diaphragm receives the-button 34, to prevent depression of the button 34 when the anti-theft device is used.
A solid plastics tongue 37 (of nylon, for example) has one end entered in the open end of the tube 35 and is pivoted thereto on e transverse pin 38. The opposite end of the tongue 37 is a sliding fit in the end of the tube 21 up to shoulder 39, the tongue 37 and tube 21 having co-acting location formations 40,41.
The remainder of the anti-theft device shown in
Figure 3 operates in the same manner as the embodiment shown in
Figures 1 and 2. The components may be made of metal or other suitable plastics material instead of nylon.
In order to provide extra security for the vehicle anti-theft device (particularly where the apparatus 16 is installed flush with the dash-board 10), an L-shaped compression strut, conveniently of nylon, and of adequate strength and stiffness, may be provided to fit into an aperture in the apparatus. In this arrangement, one limb of the strut extends longitudinally inside the apparatus (for example, into a cassette aperture when the apparatus is a cassette player).
The other limb of the strut is slotted or forked and fits around the bolt 29, between the shroud 19 and the nut 31. Such a slotted or forked construction enables the position of the longitudinal limb of the strut to be positioned optimally before the nut 31 is tightened. The anti-theft device according to the invention can then be used as described above.
