Description

LANDFILL COMPACTOR WHEEL IMPLEMENTS This invention relates to landfill compactor wheel implements.
The compaction of refuse and other materials on landfill sites is accomplished more effectively by the use of special steel wheels on the wheeled loader or compactor vehicles normally working on such sites. Existing wheels usually incorporate several teeth, or implements, welded in a helical pattern around the periphery. Implements vary considerably in both size and shape, with the most popular having a flat paddle element for drive traction, together with a wedge for supporting the paddle and generating high pressures for compaction. The wedge is usually of triangular shape with flat faces.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an implement for attachment to a landfill compactor wheel, comprising a plate-like paddle provided at a first face thereof with a wedge having spherically convex flanks to produce a curved edge which in section is always pointed with an included angle lying between 300 and 9 .
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a landfill compactor wheel to the external periphery of which are welded a plurality of implements as de-fined above.
The first face may be a leading face or a trailing face depending on whether the compaction vehicle is moving forwards or rearwards, and/or the fitting orientation of the wheels - as the wheels are made handed and each axle of a compactor vehicle has one right hand wheel and one left hand wheel. This curved edge gives a more consistent attack angle as the wedge moves through the refuse resulting in more regular compaction. Additionally, the spherical flank produces different angles between the curved leading edge or wedge tip and the wedge base, which is not the case with the known flat sided wedges. The effect of these varying angles is to transfer more of the vehicle drive power into a vertical force at the wedge tip for crushing and compacting better, whilst improving the capabilitles of the wedge base (adjacent the one face of the paddle) for separating sheet materials.
A further advantage is the longer working life of the implement in accordance with the first aspect of the invention, and consequently the wheel in accordance with the second aspect of the invention resulting from spherically convex flanked wedges.
The paddle and its wedge are preferably attached to one another, and whilst this may be by welding, an integral construction is preferred, by casting. The paddle is preferably generally rectangular, having first and second faces spaced apart to define the thickness of the paddle.
The thickness preferably tapers outwardly from a top face of the paddle, which face is in use remote from the compactor wheel, to a botto,,, face of the paddle. The paddle also has side faces which are also non-parallel, tapering outwardly from the top face of the paddle towards the bottom face of the paddle. Preferably, the two intersections between the side faces and the top face are radiussed.
According to a third aspect of the invention of independent significance, there is provided a landfill compactor wheel to the external periphery of which are welded a plurality of implements, each comprising a plate-like paddle and a wedge adjacent a first face of the paddle, in a staggered helix pattern, with the paddle of each implement fixed at an angle of at least 250 to the axis of rotation of the wheel to maintain a constant ratio between drive and side forces.
The position of the helix may vary according to the total number of teeth on the wheel but will be 250 or greater, to ensure mixing of the refuse as it is driven across the paddle face.
The implement and wheel in accordance with the aspects of the invention will now be described in greater detail by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front elevation of an implement for attachment to a landfill compactor wheel; Figure 2 is a side elevation of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a plan view of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a perspective view, from the underside, of the implement of Figures 1 to 3t Figure 5 is also a perspective view indicating how the implement of Figures 1 to 4 is set on the arcuate external periphery of a compactor wheel; Figure 6 is a plan view of a landfill compactor wheel provided with a plurality of implements of Figures 1 to 5; Figure 7 is a side elevation of the wheel of Figure 6; Figure 8 is a front elevation of Figure 7; and Figure 9 is a perspective view of the wheel of Figures 6 to 8.
In all Figures, like components are accorded like reference numerals.
In Figures 1 to 5 is illustrated an implement 1 for attachment, by welding, in a predetermined pattern to a landfill compactor wheel 2, the subject of Figures 6 to 9.
The implement 1 comprises an upstanding, plate-like paddle 3 generally of rectangular shape and having first and second faces 4, 5, spaced apart to define the thickness of the paddle, side faces 6, a top face 7 and a bottom face 8. As can be seen from Figure 2 for instance, the thickness of the paddle is not constant but tapers outwardly from its top face 7 to its bottom ,3face 8, while as can be seen from Figure 1, the side faces 6 are not parallel but taper outwardly from their respective radiussed intersections with the top face 7 towards the bottom face 8.A wedge 9 having a base 18 is formed integrally with the paddle 3 by casting and projects from the first face 4, the wedge 9 having spherically convex flanks 11 merging at the top of the wedge 9 at a common, curved edge or tip 12 which extends from a nose portion 13 of the wedge to a location part-way down the first face 4 of the paddl-e, which edge or tip 12 has an included angle betw een 3 Bo and 900. Lower portions of the spherical flanks 11 remote from the edge or tip 12 terminate-at an upright, tr-ansition -face 14 which leads to a bottom face 15 of the wedge 9, which face 15 is contiguous with the bottom face 8 of the paddle 3, with the latter having a hollow interior 16 open at the bottom face 15.
The compactor wheel 2 illustrated in Figures 6 to 9 has an axis of rotation 17 and is provided at one side with a mounting tube 18, coincident with the axis 17, to fit over a stub shaft (not shown) of a compactor vehicle, and is also provided with circular closure plates 19 at opposite ends of a cylindrical steel tyre 2 having an arcuate external periphery 21 onto which a plurality of implements 1 are seated by their bottom faces 8, 14 and welded in position, in accordance with the second aspect of the invention.
In accordance with the third aspect of the invention, the. wheel 2 is . provided with a plurality of implements 1 arranged in a staggered, helical pattern, with the paddle 3 of each implement 1 fixed at an angle of 250 with respect to the axis 17.
