Description
TEACHING APPARATUS
The present invention relates to a teaching apparatus.
According to the invention there is provided a teaching apparatus comprising a base member, the said base member having a central portion and a plurality of legs radiating from the central portion, each leg comprising fields for information, the fields of each leg, apart from a given leg, being for information different from that held in the fields of the other legs, the fields of the said given leg being for a summary of the information held in the fields of the other legs, and wherein the legs are movable from their positions radiating from the central portion to positions on or in the central portion.
In use, the apparatus is placed on a table and the legs are opened out to their radial positions. Each child sitting around the table has his/her own "leg" with information thereon which is different from the information presented to the other children on their "legs". The teacher sits with the said given leg in front of him/her so that he/she has a summary of the information presented to the children.
For example, the summary may be a complete story, each other leg having only a fraction of the story. Each child reads his/her part(s) of the story in turn, with the teacher checking against the summary. When the story is finished, the children can swap places so that next time they are reading a different part of the story. Having heard their part being read by a different child the previous time, they should find it easier to read this time.
The same principles can obviously be applied to arithmetic or the alphabet, with each child's leg having only certain sums or letters.
Preferably the legs are shorter than the diameter of the central portion and are hinged with respect to that portion. Thus, when the apparatus is not in use, the legs can be folded inwards to create a compact package.
Alternatively, the legs could slide into recesses in the central portion.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is described below, by example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows, in plan view, the teaching apparatus.
The apparatus comprises a base member 1 having a central portion 2 and a plurality of legs 3,3' radiating from the central portion. Each leg 3,3' comprises fields 4 for holding information. The fields 4 of each leg 3, apart from a given leg 3', hold information which is different from the information held in the fields of the other legs. The fields 4' of the leg 3' hold a summary of the information held in the fields 4 of the other legs 3.
The legs 3,3' are hinged on the edge of the central portion 2 50 that they can be folded down on top of the central portion. For this purpose, the legs are shorter than the width of the central portion.
As a reading class of five is an appropriate size, there are six legs to the apparatus, including one 3' for the teacher. One leg, for example the teacher's, has a flap 5 for insertion into a slot 6 at the base of the opposite leg, when the apparatus is closed. The reverse of the teacher's leg 3', being the top one when all of the legs are folded in, may have a title or the like printed thereon.
The fields 4,4' shown on the apparatus are meant to hold a complete story. The fields 4' of the teacher's leg 3' may be different colours and each field holds five lines from the story. The five lines of the first field 4' are reproduced in the first fields of the other legs 3, each field 4 having a different line and the lines being presented in order, around the star-shaped apparatus. The colour of the first fields 4 is the same as that of the first field 4' on teacher's leg 3'. The remainder of the story is presented, in the same way, in the following fields.
The central portion 2 may include illustrations from the story.
Thus, in a reading class, each child will find himself/herself reading every fifth line of the story, with the teacher following the reading with his/her summary. If later the children exchange places, they will be reading a different fifth line of the story, but will have learned from hearing another child reading that fifth line previously.
The apparatus thus allows children to be taught in a collective manner, which is entertaining and allows them to feel a part of a group.
In addition to being used in schools, the apparatus could of course also be used at home with a parent taking the place of the teacher. The apparatus could even be provided by restaurants as a novelty table mat, for use by families.
Claims (6)
1. A teaching apparatus comprising a base member, the said base member having a central portion and a plurality of legs radiating from the central portion, each leg comprising fields for information, the fields of each leg, apart from a given leg, being for information different from that held in the fields of the other legs, the fields of the said given leg being for a summary of the information held in the fields of the other legs, and wherein the legs are movable from their positions radiating from the central portion to positions on or in the central portion.
2. An apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the legs are hingedly connected to the central portion.
3. An apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the legs are shorter than the diameter or width of the central portion.
4. An apparatus according to any preceding claim, wherein the central portion is in the shape of a regular polygon, one leg being connected to each side of the polygon.
5. An apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the central portion is a hexagon.
6. A teaching apparatus substantially as herein described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
