Abstract

The adaptor includes at one end an internally threaded socket section 4 for receiving and retaining a screw threaded piece 5 of a drill chuck 3; and at its other end defines a bit 2 to be received and retained within the chuck of a rotary hand tool. This allows all manner of drill bits and screwdriving bits to be used with the hand tool. <IMAGE>

Description

Improvements in and Relating to Hand Operated Tools This invention relates to hand tools and more especially to hand operated tools for imparting rotational movement to a tool bit secured in a chuck assembly carried by the tool. Such tools include hand operated drills and screwdrivers and more especially, but not exclusively, archimedian pump-action screwdrivers and drills.
Hand tools which include chuck assemblies for receiving a variety of tool bits are, of course, well known. One example of such a tool which is currently available is the archimedian or pump action screw operated hand tool. The chucks of such hand tools are, however, designed only to accept those tool bits which are formed with a particular end configuration dictated by the manufacturer; furthermore, the internal diameters of such chucks are insufficient to accept a full range of drill or driver bits.
Archimedian or pump action screwdrivers are complex in design and generally include several detachable screwdriver bits which push into the screwdriver shaft or chuck. One problem which arises with such screwdrivers is that the bits supplied with any particular screwdriver are unique to that make of screwdriver and cannot be used with drives supplied by another manufacturer.
The present invention sets out to provide an adaptor for hand tools as described above through which a significantly increased variety and number of tool bits can be received and retained by the hand tool; and hand tools adapted in this way.
By use of an adapter in accordance with the invention, therefore, tool bits supplied by one manufacturer can be used with a driver supplied by another manufacturer.
According to the present invention in one aspect, there is provided an adaptor for a hand tool which includes a shank which includes at one end an internally threaded socket section for receiving and retaining a screw threaded piece of a drill chuck; and at its other end defines a bit to be received and retained within the chuck of a rotary hand tool.
In another aspect, the invention provides a hand operated tool for imparting rotational movement to a tool bit, the tool including a chuck for receiving one end of a shank of an adaptor, the other end of the adaptor being formed with an internally threaded socket section for receiving and retaining a screw threaded extension piece of a key-operated drill chuck.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of an adaptor for a hand tool in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is an end view of the adaptor shown in Figure 1.
The adaptor iLlustrated in the drawing comprises a shank 1 formed at one end with a conventional bit 2 to enable the adaptor to be received and retained within a standard chuck of a conventional archimedian screw operated hand tool. The adaptor carries at its other end an internally threaded socket section 4 for receiving and retaining a screw threaded extension piece 5 of a conventional electric drill key operated chuck 3.
The adaptor may be constructed from any material having the required strength characteristics.
Conveniently, the adaptor is manufactured from steel, preferably a tool steel.
In use, the presence of the adaptor and its ability to carry a conventional electric drill key operated chuck enables the hand tool to accept a far wider range of tool bits than could be accommodated by the conventional chuck of the hand tool. Where the hand tool comprises an archimedian screw or pump action driver, the tool can be used selectively as a screw driver or as a drill. This has been found to be particularly advantageous for simple household tasks where space is insufficient to enable an electric drill to be used.
As will no doubt be appreciated, the adapter described enables a conventional pump action screwdriver to act as a hand drill. Thus, when hanging a door, for example, the user merely marks out hinge holes, fits a small twist drill into the chuck for the screw size required, places the drill onto the respective marks, and pushes hard on the handle of the screwdriver to cause the drill bit to twist. Once the required hole has been produced, the twist drill is removed and the required size of screwdriver bit installed into the chuck. Thus, two jobs are completed using the one screwdriver. A bit for countersinking can also be employed.
As mentioned previously, a wide range of driver bits manufactured by a number of different manufacturers can be used, so achieving a saving in time and money.
It will be appreciated that the foregoing is merely exemplary of an adaptor for a hand tool in accordance with the invention and that modifiations can readily be made thereto without departing from the true scope of the invention.
