Description
A METHOD OF MAKING A FRAME
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a method of making a frame and has particular application to the production of wooden window frames. The invention can, however, be applied to the production of other frames, including door frames and frames for greenhouses and conservatories.
The method of the present invention involves the use of a mitre joint and it is an object of the invention to provide a method of making a frame in which the mitre joint is stronger and more reliable than comparable mitre joints at present in use.
Summary of the Invention
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of making a frame, which includes providing a pair of frame members which have end faces so shaped that they can be joined to one another to form a mitre joint at a corner of the frame, providing a slot in each of said end faces with the slots so positioned that, when the mitre joint is formed, the slots register with one another, providing a wooden plug which has a cross-section complimentary to the cross-section of the composite slot afforded by said registering slots, and securing said wooden plug in said composite slot by means of an adhesive, characterised in that the grain of the wooden plug extends at right angles to the axis of the composite slot.
Bonding of the plug in position by means of the adhesive can be augmented by means of pins passed through the plug and the frame members.
Adhesive is preferably also applied to the abutting end faces of the frame members and there can be either one or two pins passing through each of the frame members and the plug.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of making a frame, which includes providing a pair of frame members which have end faces so shaped that they can be joined to one another to form a mitre joint at a corner of the frame, providing a slot in each of said end faces with the slots so positioned that, when the mitre joint is formed, the slots register with one another, providing a plug which has a cross-section complimentary to the cross-section of the composite slot afforded by said registering slots, and securing said wooden plug in said composite slot by means of an adhesive, characterised in that the sidewalls of the slots are formed with a plurality of parallel longitudinal ribs and that the sidewalls of the plug are formed with complimentary troughs.
The ribs and troughs of the slot sidewalls and the plug can be afforded by making the slot sidewalls and the plug of saw-tooth form in cross-section.
The shaping of the slot sidewalls and the plug in the manner described above provides a greater surface area for the adhesive so that a stronger joint is thereby obtained.
Bonding of the plug in position by means of the adhesive can be augmented by means of pins passed through the plug and the frame members.
The plug can be a wooden plug, particularly a teak plug with the grain of the teak extending at right angles to the axis of the composite slot into which the plug is fitted.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 is a plan view of a corner of a window frame;
Figure 2 is a view of the window frame corner in the direction indicated by the arrow A of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the opposite corner of the frame.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
Figure 1 shows the construction of a corner of a window frame, the frame comprising frame members 10 and 11, the ends of which are cut or otherwise shaped so that they have end faces inclined at 450 to the longitudinal axes of the respective frame members 10 and 11. Each of the end faces is formed with a slot 12, 13 which is positioned midway between the upper and lower surfaces of the frame members 10 and 11 and which extends for the full length of each end face of each frame member 10, 11. The two slots 12 and 13 register with one another when the frame members 10 and 11 are fitted together as shown in Figure 1 to provide a mitre joint.
The sidewalls of the slots 12 and 13 are not parallel sided but are of generally ribbed or saw-tooth formation as shown in Figure 2, the slots being of constant cross-section throughout their length so as to provide a composite slot into which a plug 14 can be fitted. The plug 14 is of constant cross section complimentary' to that of the composite slot afforded by the two registering slots 12 and 13, i.e. the plug 14 has upper and lower surfaces which are of ribbed or saw-tooth form in cross-section. The dimensions of the plug 14 are such that it is a loose sliding fit in the composite slot afforded by the two registering slots 12 and 13.
As shown in Figure 3, the plug 14 has two parallel -sides 15 and 16 and end formations which include portions inclined at 45 to the respective sides 15 and 16 so that, when the plug 14 is fitted in the composite slot afforded by the two registering slots 12 and 13, the end faces of the plug 14 are flush with the adjacent sidewalls of the frame members 10 and 11.
Before the plug 14 is fitted in the composite slot afforded by the registering slots 12 and 13, adhesive is applied to the abutting surfaces of the end faces of the frame members and to the sidewalls and the bases of the two slots 12 and 13. The plug 14 is then slid into position and pins 17 are then driven through the frame members 10 and 11 and through the plug 14 to augment the adhesive bonding provided at the joint. As shown in the drawing, only a single pin 17 may be used for each frame member 10, 11. It is preferred, however, that two pins 17 should be used for each frame member 10, 11, i.e. a total of four pins.
Because of the ribbed or saw-tooth formation of the upper and lower surfaces of the plug 14, the area of the adhesive bond between the plug 14 and the two frame members 10 and 11 is significantly greater than would be obtained if the slots 12 and 13 were straight parallel sided slots. In addition, the ribbed formation of the plug 14 inter-engaging with the ribbed or saw-tooth formation of the sides of the slots 12 and 13 provides a keying interlock between the plug 14 and each frame member 10, 11.
The plug 14 may be formed as a moulding from a synthetic plastics material, for example, a polyamide. It is preferred, however, that the plug 14 should be of a hard wood, such as teak. In such case, the grain of the wood is at right angles to the planes of the abutting faces of the frame members 10 and 11, i.e. the grain of the wood forming the plug 14 is so oriented to provide the maximum strength for the joint.
