Lifts.-An electrically driven staircase passenger lift L travels on one or more rails R, R<1> secured to the walls and is controlled by push buttons 44, 43, 45 at the head and foot of the staircase and on the lift, respectively. The rails, Fig. 3, are channel-shaped and attached to the walls by bolts 13 passed through the wider inner side 11. A platform 22 and seats 23 are hinged to a plate 24 which is attached to a frame 18 having pairs of rollers 29, 31 for engaging the base and sides of the rails. The hoisting cable 32 passes over an idler drum 16 mounted at the top of the rail R', around a pulley 26 driven by an electric motor 41, around sheaves 36, 37, and is anchored to a floor sill 38. A bell-crank ]ever having a pointed end 33 is pivoted to the frame 18 and connected to the cable 32. When the cable breaks, a spring 33<1> pulls the end 33 into engagement with the rail and stops the lift. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 7, the lift runs on a single rail R<11> which rests on the staircase. The lift has a platform 48 for passengers, a platform 49 for luggage, and a back 50. Axles 52 secured to the lift carry rollers 56 which run on the base of the rail and are protected by inward extensions 47 of the sides. The drum 16 is geared to the motor and the cable 32, anchored as before, depends on a single bight and supports a weighted sheave 64. The safety sustaining device acts on the side 46 of the rail. In both constructions the motor is provided with a magnetic brake to prevent movement of the lift when the motor is not working.
