Abstract
A desk top electronic calculator has a switch panel (15) and a first display (16) on a face (11) and a second display (17) on a face (12). In use the same data is shown on the two displays so that the display (16) can be read by another operator and the display (17) can be read by another person facing the operator with the calculator positioned between them. The two faces are inclined at different angles to the base 10, and are of different areas. A solar cell 19 is provided in the first face (11). <IMAGE>
Description
An Electronic Calculator
This invention relates to a desk top electronic calculator
According to the invention there is provided a desk top electronic calculator comprising a switch panel, a first display in use readable by an operator and a second display in use readable by another person facing the operator with the calculator positioned between the operator and the other person.
Preferably, the calculator has a base and two faces inclined with respect to the base, the switch panel and first display being on one of the faces and the second display being on the other face.
Advantageously, said one face is larger than said other face and said other face is inclined to the base at a steeper angle than said one face.
Other preferred and/or optional features are set forth in claims 4 to 7, inclusive.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a calculator according to the present invention,
Figure 2 is a rear end view of the calculator shown in Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a side view of the calculator shown in
Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the desk top electronic calculator shown therein comprises a base 10, two adjoining faces 11 and 12 having a smooth transition therebetween, and two generally triangular sides 13 and 14. The height h of the calculator is preferably no more than one third and typically between one fifth and one quarter of each of the width w and depth d.
A switch panel 15, a first liquid crystal display 16 and a solar cell 19 are provided on the face 11 and a second liquid crystal display 17 is provided on the face 12.
The switch panel 15 comprises a plurality of depressible keys 18 bearing indicia, such as numerals or instructions, e.g. x, +, -.
The face 11 is about four times larger than the face 12 and the angle between the base 10 and the face 11 is much less than the angle between the base 10 and the face 12. Indeed, in the embodiment shown, the face 11 is inclined to the base 10 at an angle of about ten degrees and the face 12 is inclined to the base 10 at an angle of about thirty five degrees.
As shown, the display 17 is disposed on one side of the face 12 leaving space on the other side of the face 12 for an advertisement.
The calculator employs conventional electronic circuitry which drives both the first and second displays 16 and 17, respectively.
In use the same data will be shown on the two displays 16 and 17 but as viewed from above the data on display 17 will be visually inverted with respect to the data on the display 16. Thus the display 16 will be readable by a switch panel operator and the display 17 will be readable by another person, e.g. a customer, facing the operator with the calculator postioned between the operator and the other person.
The calculator need not be powered by a solar cell, but could instead be mains and/or battery powered.
The calculator could include a switch to electrically disconnect the second display 17 in the event that the operator wishes to perform a calculation not readily viewable by a person facing him/her.
The liquid crystal displays could be replaced by
L.E.D. displays and a digital clock or alarm clock could be included if desired.
Moreover, a second switch panel could be provided on the face 12.
Various other modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention defined by the appended claims.
Claims (8)
1. A desk top electronic calculator comprising a switch panel, a first display in use readable by an operator and a second display in use readable by another person facing the operator with the calculator positioned between the operator and the other person.
2. A desk top calculator as claimed in claim 1, having a base and two faces inclined with respect to the base, the switch panel and first display being on one of the faces and the second display being on the other face.
3. A desk top calculator as claimed in claim 2, wherein said one face is larger than said other face and said other face is inclined to the base at a steeper angle than said one face.
4. A desk top calculator as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the switch panel comprises a plurality of depressible indicia bearing keys.
5. A desk top calculator as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a solar cell.
6. A desk top calculator as claimed in claim 5 when dependent on claim 2, claim 3, or claim 4, wherein the solar cell is on said one face.
7. A desk top calculator as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the first and second displays are liquid crystal displays.
8. A desk top calculator substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
8. A desk top calculator as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the first and second displays are both viewable from a position directly above the calculator.
9. A desk top calculator substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows
Claims 1. A desk top electronic calculator comprising a switch panel, a first display in use readable by an operator and a second display in use readable by another person facing the operator with the calculator positioned between the operator and the other person, each of said first and second displays being viewable from a position directly above the calculator.
2. A desk top calculator as claimed in claim 1, having a base and two faces inclined with respect to the base, the switch panel and first display being on one of the faces and the second display being on the other face.
3. A desk top calculator as claimed in claim 2, wherein said one face is larger than said other face and said other face is inclined to the base at a steeper angle than said one face.
4. A desk top calculator as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the switch panel comprises a plurality of depressible indicia bearing keys.
5. A desk top calculator as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a solar cell.
6. A desk top calculator as claimed in claim 5 when dependent on claim 2, claim 3, or claim 4, wherein the solar cell is on said one face.
7. A desk top calculator as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the first and second displays are liquid crystal displays.
