Abstract

A watch has a time display 4 and a light display 5. The display 5 comprises a plurarity of light emitting diodes 9 which are powered by an on board battery power supply and controlled to light up in a random or other programmed sequence by an integrated circuit on activation of a push button 8. The time display may alternatively be an analogue mechanical or liquid crystal type. The light display may accompany alarm activation. <IMAGE>

Description

WATCH The present invention relates to a watch.
According to the invention there is provided a watch comprising a time display for displaying the time, a power supply, a plurality of light emitting elements, and means for activating the light emitting elements.
Preferably the time display and light emitting elements are mounted on a face of the watch. The light emitting elements may be activated in various combinations. Means may be provided to control manually the activation of the light ' emitting elements.
Other preferred features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying claims.
The invention will be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a watch according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a schematic view of a circuit for the watch of Figure 1.
Referring to figure 1, a watch 1 in accordance with the invention is in the form of a wrist watch and comprises a casing 2 on a strap 3. The casing 2 has a transparent front or crystal covering a time display 4 and a light display 5. Manually operable push buttons 6, 7, are provided on the watch for controlling the time display 4. A push button 8 is provided for controlling the light display 5.
The time display 4 is a digital, liquid crystal display powered by a battery power supply and integrated circuit contained in the housing as is well known in the art. Push buttons 6, 7 are used to set the time etc. and other functions such as an alarm may be provided.
The light display 5 comprises a plurality, five in this example, of light emitting diodes 9. These are powered by a second battery power supply contained in the housing and illuminated in a predetermined fashion controlled by a second integrated circuit contained in the housing. Push button 8 is provided for turning the light display.
Referring to figure 2, each diode 9 is connected to earth E and a pin of an integrated circuit IC1 which is connected to a positive terminal of the battery at pin Vc.c. A control signal is fed to IC1 by push button 8 which grounds a pin of the I.C.
The time display 4 is controlled by an integrated circuit IC2 powered by a battery (not shown) and fed with control signals from push buttons 6, 7.
A crystal oscillator time base (not shown) is provided for each integrated circuit IC1, IC2.
It will be appreciated that a single I.C. and a single battery may be used to control both the time display and the light display.
IC1 may be programmed by the manufacturer to operate in different ways in response to signals from the push button 8. For example, when the push button 8 is pressed the light emitting diodes 9 may be activated in random sequence for a fixed time period or until the button is pressed again. Control of the light emitting diodes may be combined with the function of the time display, for example so that the display is activated with an alarm function of the time display.
Various modifications may be made to the described embodiment. For example, the time display may be an analogue, mechanical display or an analogue type liquid crystal display. The watch may be a wrist watch or a fob watch or the like. It is desired to include all such modifications as fall within the scope of the accompanying claims.
