Abstract

221,232. Erban, R. Sept. 1, 1923, [Convention date]. Clutches, friction. - In pressure-applying devices for friction clutches, of the type in which rolling bodies are supported between rings or discs in opposed cavities, each rolling body lies between a pair of independent seating-elements. the two sets of seating-elements being each mounted in a carrier member. Where possible, the parts are machined together to ensure exact similarity. Balls 3, Fig. 1, are lodged between cylindrical hard steel seating-members 1, 2 having conical depressions and carried in borings in rings 4, 5. Except for light loads, the axial thrust is taken by base plates 6, 7. Screw adjusting- means 8 may be provided. The conical recesses may be replaced by V-shaped notches, the members 1, 2 then having flats coacting with flanges on the plates 6, 7 to prevent rotation, or they may have a rectangular cross-section to fit like recesses in the rings 4, 5. The balls may be supported by a cage. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the seating-members 1, spaced by wedges 12, form an annulus between the ring 4 and an outer ring 14, or the members 1 may themselves be wedgeshaped and abut directly. The rings 4, 14 may project over the balls and replace the cage. As shown in Fig. 12, the members 1 may seat in open-ended slots in the ring 4. Barrel-shaped rollers may replace the balls, or cylindrical rollers coacting with convex faces on the seating- members may be used. Where considerable movement occurs between the members 6, 7, the V-shaped depressions have a helicoidal form. In order to ensure equal distribution of pressure, one set of seating-members, when of cylindrical form, may be a fluid-tight fit in the bores of their supporting-ring, fluid-filled spaces behind them being in communication. In the form shown in Fig. 19, fluid chambers 18 are provided in the base plate 6, the members 1 bearing each on a membrane 20 or on a common annular membrane. In a clutch, Fig. 21, a disc 33, connected to a driven shaft (not shown), is gripped between a disc 32 fast on a shaft 39 and a free disc 31, which can be put into initial engagement by a collar 41 and is tightened under drive by the device 1 - - 6,the part 6 being fast on the shaft. Specifications 189,799, [Class 80 (i), Gearing, Belt &c.], and 220,331, are referred to.
