Abstract
Apparatus for the application of refractory materials, including a vertical feed tube (16) for refractory material, a spinner tube (22) encircling at least an upper portion of the feed tube (16) and provided with a spinner head (24) from which material issuing from the upper end of the feed tube (16) is flung outwards, a bearing bush (32) being provided between the feed tube (16) and the spinner tube (22). So that the apparatus will require very little power to drive it, means are provided for imparting a vertically upwards force to a lower portion of the feed tube (16) to relieve the bearing bush (32) of a part of the load which it would otherwise carry. These means comprise a plate (38, Fig.4) and an adjustment bolt (46). <IMAGE>
Description
Apparatus for the application of refractory materials.
The invention relates to apparatus for the application of refractory materials
Various kinds of apparatus have been used in the past for the application of refractory materials, for example to the refractory linings of furnaces and the like. The object of the invention is to provide a very simple apparatus which will require very little power to drive it.
According to the invention, there is provided apparatus for the application of refractory materials, the apparatus including a casing from the top of which extends a vertical feed tube for refractory material, a spinner tube encircling at least an upper portion of said vertical feed tube and provided at its upper end with a spinner head from which material issuing from the upper end of the feed tube is flung outwards, means within the casing for rotating the spinner tube, and a bearing bush being provided between the feed tube and the spinner tube, means being provided for imparting a vertically upwards force to a lower portion of the feed tube to relieve the bearing bush of a part of the load which would otherwise be carried thereby.
Preferably, the means provided for imparting a vertically upwards force to a lower portion of the feed tube will include a plate member of forked shape, the fork ends of said plate member engaging respective abutment members which have been welded to the opposite sides of a T-piece into which a lower end of the feed tube extends. The fork shaped plate member will preferably be made of spring steel and be cantilever mounted on a base portion of the apparatus, a screwthreaded adjustment member being provided to act between the plate member and the base to impart an adjustable amount of upward force to the fork ends of said plate member.
In order that the invention may be fully understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which:- Figure 1 is a partly broken away side view of apparatus embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional view through a spinner head forming part of the apparatus, drawn to a somewhat larger scale than Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 in
Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a detail view which will be referred to presently.
Referring now to Figure 1 of the drawings, the apparatus there illustrated for the application of refractory materials includes a casing 10 of pyramidal shape upstanding from a square base 12 filled with concrete ballast 14. A vertical feed tube 16 extends through the top of the casing. The lower end of the feed tube is connected to a Tpiece 18 to which a material supply pipe 20 extends from the side of the casing.
As shown, a spinner tube 22 encircles the vertical feed tube and extends downwards to a point just above the T-piece 18. The upper end of the spinner tube is provided with a spinner head generally indicated 24. The spinner head includes upper and lower discs 26 and 28 between which are located a plurality of angled vanes 30. The arrangement is such that material issuing from the upper end of the feed tube into the space between the two discs is flung outwards by the rotation of the spinner head. A bearing bush 32 is provided between the feed tube and the spinner tube.
Means which are located within the casing 10 for rotating the spinner tube are constituted by a compressed air motor 34 and an endless chain drive generally indicated 36.
Referring now in particular to Figure 4, means are provided for imparting a vertically upwards force to a lower portion of the feed tube to relieve the bearing bush 32 of a part of the load which would otherwise be carried thereby. These means are constituted by a plate number 38 of forked shape which is bolted to the base of the apparatus by bolt 40 extending through spacer 42.
The fork ends of the plate member engage respective abutment members 44 which have been welded to the opposite sides of the T-piece 18. A bolt 46 which extends through a threaded hole in the plate member abuts against the base, the arrangement being such that as the bolt 46 is tightened down the weight of the vertical feed tube is increasingly taken by the plate member and the bearing bush 32 is increasingly relieved of load. In this way it has been found that the compressed air motor has been able to rotate the spinner tube at a substantially constant speed and without being slowed down by excessive frictional resistance at the bearing bush.
Various modifications may be made and it will be understood that the apparatus can be manipulated in various ways so that the feed tube need not extend vertically upwards as shown in Figure 1. The base of the apparatus may be fitted with means whereby it can be carried by the forks of a fork lift truck.
