Abstract

221,126. Sage, R. W., and Boughner, H. R. Dec. 3, 1923. Clutches, friction.-Welldrilling apparatus comprises jack posts C, D supporting the shaft E of a driven band wheel (not shown), and a sand reel 36 driven from the band wheel shaft through a chain &c. and one or more slip clutches. The band wheel carries a clutch drum secured to the band wheel by bolts 8, Fig. 3; a loose sprocket 16 carries a pivoted lever 14 operated by a sliding collar 10 to bind a clutch band 23 around the drum and thereby drive the sprocket 16, chain 26 and a sprocket 25 loose on the sand reel shaft. A collar 53, slidable on the sand reel shaft under control of a lever 59, carries arms 51 passing through tha sprocket 25 and adapted to rock a lever 49 pivoted to a disc 28 secured to the sprocket; the lever 49 acts through a link 46<1> and bell crank lever 43 to bind a clutch band 41 around a drum 37 keyed to the sand reel shaft, whereby the sand reel is driven. The bell crank lever 43 is pivoted on a, part adjustable relatively to one end of the band 41 by a hinged bolt. A brake band 73 also surrounds the drum and is operated by the lever 59 through toggle mechanism 66 to control lowering of the sand pump.
