Description
WORK BENCH
This invention relates to a portable steel work bench for pipe fitters, engineers etc.
According to the present invention there is provided a portable steel work bench comprising:
(a) a girder length,
(b) at least one engineers vice carried on the girder length;
(c) a turntable carried by the girder length;
(d) two pairs of pipe support rollers, adjacent peripheries of which define a generally S"-shaped, pipe supporting recess; and
(e) at least one chain vice to clamp a pipe length against the support rollers.
Other preferred features of the invention will become apparent from the following description of the accompanying drawings showing, by way of example, a perspective view of a workbench in accordance with the invention.
A portable, steel, workbench 1 comprises an "I"section girder length 2 e.g., lm long, flanges 3 of 127mm width disposed upright, and an interconnecting web 4 of 179mm disposed horizontally. Towards each end of the girder length 2, and at opposite lateral sides thereof is welded a socketed member 5 to receive an upper end of one of four, tubular bench support legs 6, which are braced by four struts 7, one extending between each leg 6 and the girder length 2, and secured by nuts and bolts 8, so x that the legs 6 may be readily attached and detached from the girder length 2 for ease of handling and transport.
Towards each opposite end of the girder length 2 is a support plate 9 is welded across the flanges 3 and to an upper face of each support plate 9, is welded the end of an upright limb of a pair of support brackets 1 spaced apart to receive a pair of rollers 11 located in a common plane and rotatable about axes parallel to the longitudinal axis of the girder length 2 -on a pivot pin housed in bearing sockets 12 welded to the horizontal flanges of the support brackets 1B. The adjacent peripheries of each pair of rollers define a generally "V"-shaped recess to receive the periphery of a pipe or tube, so that the latter may be readily turned or manipulated e.g. during cutting, welding etc.Adjacent one of the pairs of rollers is a chain vice 13 comprising a chain 14, a free end of which is adapted to be engaged on a spigot extending from one flange 3, while the opposite flange 3 carries a bracket with a threaded nut 15 in which is screwed a threaded tightening member 16 adapted to engage a suitable link of the chain, the tightening member 16 having an operating handle 17 so that, with the chain 14 wrapped over a pipe seated in the nv" recess, the pipe may be clamped into the recess so that the pipe may for instance be rotated by hand whilst being welded.The pipe may be of length to extend between the fixed-position roller pairs at the ends of the girder length 2, but to accommodate pipes of shorter length (or to give additional support to a pipe extending between the fixed-position roller pairs 11) two pairs of similar but positionally adjustable rollers 18 are provided intermediate the roller pairs 11. In detail, the adjustable rollers 18 are mounted on a user-displaceable slide carriage 19 which is a close fit between opposed faces of the flanges 3. Thus, the work bench 1 may simultaneously support two pipes, one between one roller pair 11 and one roller pair 18, and the other between the other roller pair 11 and the other roller pair 18.
Each flange 3 is provided with through holes by which a first tray 2 is readily attachable and releasable to one flange 3, to which tray is bolted a conventional engineers vice 21, and a second tray 22 is readily attachable and releasable to the opposite flange 3 to which is bolted a conventional chain-vice 23. The trays 2 and 22 are of course removed from the girder length 2 for ease of handling and transport. On the flange 3 adjacent the engineers vice 21, but opposite the chain-vice 23 is a "V" support 24 for a pipe secured in the chain-vice 23. To the flange 3 carrying the chain-vice tray 22 is bolted a bracket 25 to receive a pivot pin of a freely rotatable turntable 26, on which for instance a pipe coupling and a pipe length may be seated about the axis of rotation of the turntable, for hand rotation of the turntable during welding of the coupling to the pipe length. Also, to one end of the girder length 2 is bolted an earthing strap 27 to which is clampable a earth lead of an electric welding set.
Claims (1)
1. A portable steel work bench comprising:
(a) a girder length,
(b) at least one engineers vice carried on the
girder length;
(c) a turntable carried by the girder length;
(d) two pairs of pipe support rollers, adjacent peripheries of which define a generally V-shaped, pipe supporting recess; and
(e) at least one chain vice to clamp a pipe length against the support rollers.
2. A work bench as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the girder length is of "I"-section.
3. A work bench as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the engineers vice is attached to a tray, itself releasably attachable to the girder length.
4. A work bench as claimed in any preceding Claim, wherein the chain-vice(s) is attached to a tray, itself releasably attachable to the girder length.
5. A work bench as claimed in any preceding Claim, wherein the turntable is provided with a pivot pin rotatably supported by a bracket attached to the girder length.
6. A work bench as claimed in any preceding Claim, wherein the two pairs of pipe support rollers are fixedposition roller pairs, with one pair located adjacent each end of the girder length.
