Abstract
A method of making a stuffing comprises forming wood into chips and then into substantially spherical wood particles which preferably have a roughened surface. The chips may be shaped and roughened by treatment in a sandpaper grinding machine. The wood may be Japanese cypress, or a wood other than Japanese cypress and the particles formed therefrom impregnated with fragrant essence extracted from Japanese cypress.
Description
Stuffing for Pillows
The present invention relates to a stuffing for use with pillows or like items, eg, cushions and especially adapted to promote beneficial sleep.
Buckwheat chaff is a natural pillow stuffing or padding which is inexpensive and has a suitable feeling of hardness.
With time however the buckwheat chaff is infested with various organisms and/or mould because of its poor moisture transpiration. Other material includes "adzuki" beans phaseolus angularis and soybeans glycine max. These too are inexpensive and have a favorable hardiness. However, the beans may be eaten by worms after a period of time.
Stuffing made of synthetic resin materials which are beneficial to health are known but such synthetic materials lack a natural feel.
It is one object of the invention to provide a new and improved stuffing for use with pillows or the like and which has better hardness, moisture uptake, transpiration and sanitation.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of making a pillow stuffing, the method being characterised bv cutting a wood into chips having a predetermined size and forming the chips into substantially spherical particles adapted to release the fragrance.
Preferably te wood is formed into generally cubic chips having a predetermined size, for example, about 4 millimeters square, and tben mechanically forming the square chips into substantially spherical particles having a desired maximum diameter (preferably about 3 to 4 millimeters). The spherical particles may be roughened by using any suitable machine such as a sandpaper grinding machine which comprises a rotary cage formed of a screen, for example, having a mesh of about 2 millimeters, a rotary surfaces. Other tools may be used to round and roughen cubic square wood chips into spherical wood particles.
Preferably the stuffing is formed of Japanese cypress or "hinoki" for a purpose which will be described, but may be made of any other wood material. Since Japanese cypress is expensive, it is advantageous to utilize waste Japanese cypress.
Japanese cypress emits a fragrance providing a mental relaxing, stabilising or calming action and a pillow stuffed with particles thereof may cause a user to have a good sleep. Japanese cypress is chamaecyparis obtusa and is the chemical nature of the essence which releases the smell of hinokitiol, molecular formula of which is C10H1202.
In order to promote the release of the fragrance, the wood particles are roughened at their surfaces as described. The fragrance is released by the weight and movement of the user's head causing the particles to be rubbed against each other.
Japanese cypress includes a natural agent which is effective for sterilization and detoxification. As a result the pillow containing Japanese cypress particles will be more resistant to attack by germs and moulds.
In general, wood materials are superior in moisture uptake and transpiration. Therefore, the pillow of the invention is kept dry. Moreover, wood materials provide a suitably hard feel to pillows.
Although the present invention has been described primarily in relation to Japanese cypress, it may use any other wood material. Wood other than Japanese cypress, after being formed into particles, may be impregnated with an oily fragrant essence extracted from Japanese cypress. Such woods include Chamaecyparis obtusa var. breviramea, Chamaecyparis obtusa var. pendula, Chamaecyparis obtusa var.
filisoides, Chamaecyparis obtusa var. lycopokioides,
Chamaecyparis obtusa formaformosana, Chamaecyparis obtusa pisifera, Chamaecyparis obtusa . Formosensis, Chamaecyparis obtusa Lawsoniana, Chamaecyparis obtusa nootkaensis, and Chamaecypafls ck sa rr,yoides.
